Hey man. I’m normally a lurker and just watch content and never comment. But I wanted to take the time to comment and say that while coming back into art and the art world (after being lost for 3-4 years) your channel was actually one of the first ones I found. I’ve binge watched a ton of your videos now including sitting through hours of your live-streams. I’ve found a couple other channels I enjoy for character work, but nothing has compared to your channel and how you teach. Not only how you teach, but your view on art and how you perceive it. While you’re years and years ahead of me I strive to one day have your skill level. I absolutely love your views on painting and how your imagination works. I think we have a lot in common, and I could go into detail - but I don’t want to seem creepy, lol. Anyways, thank you so so much for all this free content I truly appreciate it and will use your knowledge you’re lending me to let MY imagination flow in ways that are different than yours. I feel like you’re the teacher I needed throughout school that I never had. As I have already watched tons of your videos without practicing much (I know that is bad, but I’m waiting on getting an iPad Pro for Christmas) I know I’m going to be going back through and watching a ton again once I get it and I can’t wait to see what you produce in the future. You’re honestly the artist that has given me tons of motivation/inspiration to just create and tell my stories in a unique way. I love your method of using one brush, I think it gives an incredible look to artwork and ... god I hope I can get that good with my brush strokes one day because THAT is the look I love and what catches my eyes and heart. Sorry I’m being extremely cheesy, but I just wanted to let you know you’re an amazing artist and person! I know you don’t do work for free, but I thought it was worth a shot to say - I would absolutely LOVE seeing you paint some sort of mage or wizard or any type of person/fantasy character in your style and how you would apply your brush strokes to skin and face. Thanks for reading Mikko!

I found this video after doing this for about 4 months now, and ill say, ive improved far far more in those 4 months of daily studying with a single no opacity square brush, than i did in the two years of art prior. It felt almost like it clicked after awhile, able to break down structure, shape etc with limited tools allowed me to work directly on color, shape language, sillouettes and more. This is an AMAZINGLY effective method of learning, and I would recommend it for anyone!

Damn, the opposite side of this is using only one fine liner for all your art, as i did for over a year it the beggining. It showed me how to do things with lines i never knew were possible, but somewhere on those stairs i lost love for my own art. I guess you just need to do something until you can no longer stand it and then move on to other things and do the same. So when the time comes where you want to mix them, you can use knowledge from all of those worlds to make something special and yours! Great video as always man! Wise words.

Like said in the lower thirds: if a method, any method makes you lose the drive. It’s no longer effective. This way of learning is effective but it’s NOT easy. Using tons of brushes can be an easy way to avoid design decisions when it comes to composition. Being forced to make those decisions is like putting one’s brain in overdrive. Like any training it gets easier eventually :)

Thank you for videos like this. My depression has stopped me from painting for 10 year now and I’m now trying to ”force” myself to get back to that wonderful place of creativity. I got myself an iPad and Apple Pencil, never tried digital before. And seeing what you create in combination of what you are saying takes away the overwhealming feeling and the internal mean dialog of why I’m not as good as I was 10 years ago. Thank you for helping me push forward. Pet your puppie from me! /Anna, the Swedish neighbor :)

If art is one of those things that you feel might trigger anxiety then in that case I’d recommend considering if exercises like this is worth doing. There are so many ways to paint which are fun and enjoyable. This however, while effective, it’s not in any way easy and if it makes you dislike painting then I’d simply try something else. Taking care of yourself and your relationship with your creativity should always be the number one priority when it comes to art. 🐻💕

This method might be efficient but in the long run it’s always important to listen to your inner voice on what will actually keep you functioning. Just because some way of learning is more efficient than others doesn’t mean that we should always be working at 200% intensity. However there are a lot of people who put in that 200% of energy but if they waste it all on details then that’s an easy way to be both disappointed with the results and frustrated with the lack of progress. I should have said in this video that details are the least efficient way to progress :/ Well there will be other videos I guess 🤷♂️🐻

A timely video for me! I recently started drawing again and today I was going through an art course I'm taking and i was using a brush provided by the artist and as I attempted to follow along with the painting and project given in my frustration I tried to find another brush I thought would work better. After looking and testing for an hour to no avail I told myself that it was pointless because obviously it's not the brush but how I'm using it and made myself go back and start over and ya know what? I finally got more of the results I was looking for. Point being the problem wasnt the brush but it was my outlook and how I was using it. I let my frustration get it the way because I couldnt instantly do the same thing as an artist with years of experience but I'm glad I went back, started over, and stuck it out! I'm taking it a little at a time but so far I'm happy I'm working past the bumps of frustration I feel. I'll have to try the one brush method soon and also try and utilize the tools I have more fully. Also Beautiful piece of the autumn season it makes me feel like going for a walking in the crisp weather!

This sounds like great advice. I’ve been at the beginner stage for a few years now mainly, I think, because I keep playing around and wanting to learn everything at once. I started wanting to draw people and animals but it just wasn’t clicking for me. Seeing a channel like yours (and a few others) made me want to try more landscape and concept style art. That just feels better to me. It now I’ve begun to realize I need to start practicing concepts - just draw rocks or mountains and learn to find shapes, add lighting - without getting into detail. Sticking to one brush sounds great because then I’m not also worrying about whether I should use the texture one and what it’s settings should be. Thanks! Oh, and this is a great piece of art too!

That was great! Thank you! Over the last few months, since your Art is My Real Home Challenge, I have really started to use your advice on single brush paintings and it makes so much sense. When I am using paints, I am using one brush. It should be the same digitally for a painterly style. And I also do your doodle until something shows up in the frame method. It has really surprised me what I have been able to do! I appreciate all of your lessons, and now also the puppy. She is darling!
@kaydreamer4 жыл бұрын
I tend toward a single brush in landscape paintings and watching you paint has only reinforced that tendency. It’s so nice to sit and slowly build up layers of paint with that one favourite brush! For me, specialised brushes, like for foliage and such, are tools for speed. I’ll use them to a limited extent for landscapes in comics, when there usually has to be some minor sacrifice to quality in order to maintain pace (especially since I have a tendency to want to paint the background in EVERY panel) but when I want to just paint, or when there’s that one establishing full-page establishing illustration I want to really make the reader stop and admire, there’s really no substitute to just sitting and painting. I totally agree that working with a single brush is enormously helpful for learning! It also lends a more organic feel to digital art, which I adore.

Great advice about using one brush. People often waste their time getting bogged down with brushes and effects, seeking a magic elixir to elevate their art technique. No doubt, some people succeed (Kerem Beyit comes to mind, whose style can be immediately recognized by his particular use of an array of texture brushes that makes his style immediately recognizable). But as you suggest, most people would make faster progress focusing on just one brush, especially in the beginning. Just as important as reducing brush choice, is learning where to saturate and desaturate portions of a painting. After brush strokes, lighting becomes the most important element. Depending where light is cast, saturation will fall only in certain sides of objects. The delicate play of light and darkness, saturation and desaturation can become one of the most beautiful and mesmerizing aspects of painting. Although fantasy painting depicts a hyper realistic realm, leaning heavy on over saturation, but artists who pay attention to light and shadows, who know the value of desaturating certain areas where light is absent, are able to add an additional dimension to their painting. During your demo, I was waiting for you to afterwards to add desaturation and bounce light to certain portions, but the video ended leaving my eyes and imagination still craving these subtle final missing touches. However, I still enjoyed the video and your demo ... I’m a subscriber :-)
@angrymikko4 жыл бұрын
I don’t use desaturate because it tends to kill the intended colour. I always work from muted colours to more saturated ones and from dark to light.

i always love watching your paintings come together. I know there is no right way to paint as you said in your video… i am just curious how you figured out how to layer all those colours togther to make textures, is it just your artist mind knowing what you want it to look like in the end, or trial and error when you were learning the digital format? Whenever I am painting, I feel like I don’t know what I am doing 99% of the time.

Interesting question ☝ If I'd have to pick one for THIS painting it would be Jagged Brush but if I'd have to pick one to use for an entire year it would definitely be the round brush. Both of those get a bit too light and not thin enough at low pressure so I'd probably fix that first.

@angrymikko4 жыл бұрын
Like I said earlier, totally depends on what you are making. If I could use only one brush for all paintings I’d choose the round brush. Luckily I don’t have to make such choice and I switch the brush based on what I’m making. All 3 of the Weather Box paintings were done with Polar’s Ice Cream Truck but I wouldn’t use that brush for a painting like this where the stroke direction is more important than the chunky chalk like textures in Weather Boxes. If I didn’t have the option to use my tools I could make the same paintings with a round brush. For social media posts the texture is barely visible anyway. But this is a REALLY high resolution painting and I made it for a large scale print. In a print those brush directions and pressure levels are clearly visible and it’s just one of those things that at least to me makes a print have more depth. I think the tools should always fit the purpose but it’s also good to know how the tools work in the first place. If I didn’t know how a painting done with just a Jagged Brush looks I wouldn’t have the information needed to make a decision to use that brush when it fits what I’m about to do.

Are you willing to check out peoples artwork and give help advice or tips to help them grow in the medium they painted in.?

Have you ever thought about teaching a structured paid course on digital painting for beginners? You have quite a few followers, it would probably be extremely successful. I'd take the course and gladly hand you my money.

Yes, I’m not sure about the platform though. For longer lectures it would be handy if students could stream the lesson instead of downloading it. I’m looking into the options but because it’s such an expensive investment it’s a decision I can’t make lightly.

This was an amazingly inspiring video! I had one question though. In using just one brush are you also just using one layer or multiple layers with one brush?
