How does this differ from the tone knob on the guitar, technically and functionally?

My guess is that it is varying the capacitance of the cable itself. It is clearly a more subtle change than you get with the tone intros on a guitar.

It is best to have the variable capacitance paired with a cable that has very low capacitance. We made this as a pedal someone could use it with a cable with very high capacitance and it would limit the tone options. Good question!!

Ah... makes sense. Thanks Eric! Also, would love to know why you decided not to soffit the speakers in the new space even if it requires changing speakers. Seems like proper soffit mounting could alleviate many of the issues you're having with the low end. @@mrwev

There's the Source Audio Zio if you wanted variable capacitance in a pedal format. This is what it's Tone switch does. Not as many positions, but you do get a free boost pedal and high quality buffer with it :)
