I did something similar but in a different way; I shot with a zoom for a month and then used Lightroom to determine the focal length I use most. I thought it was 35mm for street photography but it turned out to be 50mm (full frame equivalent). Now when I grab a camera I throw this lens on it and I don’t feel like I short changed myself. Since I’m always using this focal length, I have decided to purchase the pro version with the 1.4 aperture. Thanks for the great video.

I like the idea. I’ve got a Pany GX85 with only a 35-100 f/2.8. Might just get the 12-35 f/2.8 then try focal lengths for a month. Would like to use primes in the end.

I'm really looking forward to following along. I used to be a "I need all the focal lengths" to now where my kit is mostly 4 primes: 20mm (rarely used), 35mm (home base), 50mm and 90mm (rarely used). The key for me was realizing the game isn't having all the gear to take _any_ imaginable image but "what image can I make with what I have?".

One camera one lens is a fantastic challenge and it will definitely help deprogram you. When the pandemic was getting started in 2020 I realized my photography business wasn't happening. So I sold my X-T2 and lenses and grabbed an X100V as I'd always wanted to try 1 camera 1 lens. As a 50mm guy, I hated it for a month but then it became the most fun I've had since I started photography. No G.A.S., no fussing around with different focal lengths, no feeling weighted down with stuff...I shot with just the V for 8 months and made some of my best work. Protests, portraits, landscape...You really can learn to see in a single field of view. I ended up getting more stuff later and now I feel all G.A.S.-y again. My plan is to pick up the next X100 in 2024 as that body was the perfect package for my work and the V is now stupidly overpriced. I could get a 23mm prime but the size does make a difference, as you're finding. As does just having that interchangeable lens mount there, taunting you 😅

Fuji X100V with the options of cropping to 50/70 internally works for me. GAS wise it hasn't stopped me thinking about the Nikon Zf unfortunately

Just pressed play. I am sitting in a 3br house that is wall to wall with cameras, video gear, lights, stands, equipment, computers, guitars (two dozen of them!) and drums and synths and amps and recording racks and gear and on and on, plus life stuff and no less than half a dozen tvs in all the rooms, and i live ALONE, I just accumulated stuff to assuage my loneliness and boredom. I have 9 cameras! ALL the lenses, etc etc. And I just bought land in Costa Rica and Im moving in January from Tennessee to another country. So its time to eliminate and purge. Can I get rid of GAS? I dunno, but I sure as hell regret my spending right now as i face moving in suitcases and storing. selling and eliminating and purging "stuff" as fast and hard as I can. I have 4 cars! (a truck, two classic porsches and a daily) I need only one of them and when I leave the country, I cant bring it easily or cheaply either, so its gotta go eventually too. I have TOO MUCH stuff and its a huge liability on personal freedom. Stuff is an anchor. Stuff is fun, stuff is nice, stuff feels good to own, but stuff is an anchor, and you cant use 24 guitars or 9 cameras or 4 cars at the same time, man. Freedom to move around life and the world, with a lighter load, is going to feel WAY better than having piles of barely used stuff feels.

Hi Eric! KZbin decided to recommend me this video so I might as well leave a comment. I'm thinking about taking a similar challenge myself, though for a different reason. I'm a 50mm (full frame eq) guy for sure, even 4 months of having only fuji 23/2 for my X-E3 weren't able to change that. My XF35/1.4 is on the body for 95% of the time. For me this sort of challenge is about figuring out how to work with two other lenses I have - TTartisan 17/1.4 and vintage SMC Takumar 55/1.8. Both are brilliant lenses but I barely use them because I'm not very confident with them (for which manual focus is also a factor) There's also an alternative way to figuring out 'your' focal length - using a kit zoom. The exact model of the lens doesn't matter as long as it covers the usual 24-70-ish range. Shoot that zoom for a good while (couple of months to a year) then analyze what part of the focal range you use the most - there's your answer. It's not without flaws though - you'll be more likely to turn the zoom ring rather than take some steps closer/farther. Also, the 1.4/1.2 versions of the lenses aren't always better which is very true about the 1st gen of Fuji primes and also it's more complex than just the aperture value and depends on your particular use case. For example: Fuji's 50/1.0 is optically better than 50/2 but it is also huge and heavy which makes it not very travel friendly.

I'm an 18mm f2, 27mm f2.8, 35mm f2 guy on my XE4 and XT5. I have the 56mm but it feels so impersonal. I have the Instax Mini EVO but the switch that prints stopped working. So now it's just the Instax WIDE printer.

This is a good idea! I’ve been GASing hard for an X100F/V but the used prices make me feel like I should wait, especially since I have a decent amount of Fuji gear already. I’ve been considering using my XT3 with the 35F2 in square aspect ratio JPEG and using my Instax square / square photo album until the GAS goes away 😅

Best of luck with the challenge. I've found the 35mm does work 80%-90% of the time for me on my xt30ii. The last bit is usually when I'm indoors and it just isn't wide enough. Coming from the GRiii to using the 35mm, i've had to learn to readjust myself for distance. The 35 has shown me that the fujicrons are so nice, I'm working on having the full set because of their size. Having the bigger f1.4 - f1.2 lenses is great but, as you've said in many of your videos, takes away from my camera being compact and easy to pickup/take with me. When I'm looking to just have something on me, the GRiii has proven to still be the best overall choice when I'm out, especially with my toddler. I'm slowly building towards having one or the other so there's always a camera on me. My biggest challenge now is getting the photos to match up better and have a cohesive look.

Interesting twist with the Instax printer. I know the dilemma seems to be in the lenses, but looking forward to your experience with the Instax printer. I've found that the instant printers are fun. Nice to be holding a photo in your hand so quickly.

Eric I have the XT5 and have used it for extensive travel and walking. I used it with a Peak Design capture clip and it worked great! A backpack with a chest strap is a must when carrying this way. I put the 23mm on and it pretty much is glued on. This would be my suggestion especially for Disney. You can crop the heck out of the XT5 especially with the 23mm. Safe travels and I enjoy your videos.

I have cameras from full frame, APSC and micro 4,3 so I would be good with and camera and lens for a month or so with no problem, but because I photographed so many subjects and use focal lengths of 16 mm to 400mm . So that might be a problem. Going to Breckinridge Colorado is where I learned to snow ski so many years ago. At the time I had water skied for many years and the two were so different. I went with my father's brother, we stayed in Breckinridge and it was a great place to stay. We went on what was called the ski the Summit pass, a bus took us from Breckinridge to several other ski areas, KEYSTONE, Copper Mountain, Arapahoe basin their might have been one more but that is what I remembered. When we were in Breckinridge, they had two different mountains, one was a traditional New England style with pine trees and trails of different difficulty, the second one was what my uncle described as European style mountain with open areas to ski and no threes to contend with, this may have changed because I was there in the early to mid 80's. But it was a great experience. I would say if you want to do some mountain photography something in the 24-120 would be a good place to start,

I do a lot of street photography and 90% of my shots come from a micro 4/3 camera and a 25mm lens. It streamlines things so much. It keeps everything light and makes you think. Keep it up. And bravo on ditching the GAS.

I got my x-t5 with a 35mm 1.4 just two months ago.i couldn't be happier. Never thought that the 35mm can or would replace my every day zoom. But it did. Its an amazing lens and focal length

I just got a fuji instax wide printer and it's so good. As far as carrying the x-t5 around, just grab a peak design 3l and it's comfortable to have with you wherever. X-T5 is the right camera IMO. Even if the lens is too wide, you can crop in with that 40mp sensor pretty easily.

I've done it this july. It sounds easy, but it wasn't. I've got my good old canon eos m with the 22mm pancake-lens to be small. The gear wasn't the problem. Just myself. Not every day is a "creative-day". Sometimes i see the things so easy, another day there is nothing... that is the real challenge(for me...). So I'm very curious about your experiences. Keep it up👍🏻

Been a 35mm shooter for quite some time with my Nikon gear. I picked up an M11 and 50mm Summarit and have really been enjoying that combo. That has been my primary EDC. I have used my Nikkor 105mm micro lens for some close-up shots and the Nikkor 200-500 for some backyard wildlife, but those are specialty uses and not meant for an EDC setup. I like this concept and could easily see this as a permanent setup. However, I would never sell off all of my other lenses because there could certainly be use cases where I would still need them.

If youre trying to break the cycle you pick a lens and go. All the limitations it could possibly have is the point you have to make it work. . My year with an 85 was just as much of a pain as my year with a 28.

I love the fuji film sims but the Lumix S5ii X is pulling me with its LUT feature. That camera with a Sigma I series 35mm F2 or LEICA SUMMICRON-SL 35mm F/2 ASPH if you have the budget.

I did the jpeg switch years ago….ill never go back. Like you, I now just focus on the photography, get the damn thing right to begin with. I also tried the one lens thing too, but didn’t have the willpower to stay with it. I like primes, and I definitely leaned to the 35mm (full frame), but just couldn’t make that my only camera. Thats why i sold my x100f, then gave it another try with the x100v, and sold that too. (i too have GAS badly). Good luck, i think it will be illuminating if you can do it.

I have multiple lenses, all primes, and I've forced myself lately to only use one on each outing, forces me to get the shot with what i have which leads to more creative photos rather than zooming or switching lenses, obviously if im hiking or something I'll probably bring a wide and a short tele but for everything else one lens will do

Ah yes, GAS! I know it well, with cameras and lenses, stereo equipment, records, cd's, bicycles etc. Only one wife and only two cars though. Your Fuji system is probably all a guy could ever want and make some amazing photos with.

Get the sigma 18-50 f2.8. Small, versatile, great close focus, good bokeh. I could not live with just one prime on my camera, to limiting. Unless you had a specific photography project in mind, and that’s all you were going to do

The Sigma is my favorite zoom for Fuji, but the entire point of this kind of project is to use a prime. To really learn a focal length, get a consistency in your images and get more creativity thanks to the limitation. With a zoom it is very easy to let the lens do the job which means you miss good opportunities that you would see if you were forced to move your feet to get the picture.

I have three cameras and 14 lenses. 80% of my photos are shot on one focal length: 85mm (which i get with two of the cameras and different lenses respectively). I am very familiar with what I like, but don't give up the occasional variety. While I don't know all of the focal lengths I have perfectly I am very familiar with my favorite.

I wish you luck but I’m not sure the utility of it. We’re not talking about carrying around a 1dx and the trinity of zooms. Your whole Fuji kit would fit into a lunch box. I guess I don’t see the problem with carrying a couple lenses or even putting the whole kit in a corner of your suitcase. Then pick and choose a lens or two per-outing. If the goal is mainly just to learn a focal length then I get it. But as an overall anti-GAS strategy I’m not so sure. I don’t think it’s excessive GAS to have a moderately versatile kit. If anything I think you should ADD a telephoto zoom and call it done. Now the whole printing-every-day thing I can definitely get behind…

Great idea and video! Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but how about the Fuji xt30ii. Small camera and will give you great IQ. Also, I never understood the fascination with raw shooting and post processing? What I see being done in post by many is creating a scene/picture that never existed by adding colors etc to the picture. Adding to a picture that was not there in reality does not make sense to me. The beauty of photography is capturing the real natural world around as it is. Just like Ansel Adam’s did and those after him.

@@ericrjennings I almost purchased that camera, but was hesitant about it since it does not have stabilization, and also thought it might be too small, leading to an uncomfortable handling each time I used it. Anyways ultimately I went with the Fuji XS-20 which is not that much bigger. I think if I did more street photography, stills, etc, I would’ve snatched it up. Since I do more birding, wildlife, and some landscape. It may have not been very practical to get that camera. Could’ve been done, but it would look a little weird with such a small camera with large lenses.

Lol, the XT5 is not a big camera. I use it with a Voigtlander 23 1.2 as my daily driver. I also have the Sigma 23 1.4, but don't use it as much (surprisingly).
