If by acting you mean the little parts where he reads a set of pre-written hog wash to promote his show, then ... No. He brings the same level of creativity there that he did here. He would be such a cool guy to be friends with.

v5u7sulh2 I think what he means by acting is the funny-man/straight-man persona he does with Jamie. Adam does the very animated and energetic style which I occasionally find slightly annoying. But from watching tested you see that this is just an act for the Mythbusters show, as he's less animated (but just as enthusiastic) in real life.

I like to think that in a video like this, Norm represents the average viewer. Showing that if you follow the techniques Adam uses, it isn't too difficult. If he went off on his own and did a crazy design you lose that... teacher/student vibe, which I think really works well.

D Fawx I agree with the both of you. I like how it was presented. Makes me feel less stupid lol Plus Adam has been doing things like this his whole life. I wouldn't even to think to drill a screw in to the handle to keep the leather in place. I hope they decide to make more eps like this, its easy to follow along and if you had the right tools and pieces you could make your own just watching the video.

I remember for one Halloween, I was going as Link, and while my mom helped make the costume, my step-dad carved me a wooden Master Sword, and it was absolutely beautiful. He painted the handle, and I put aluminium tape on the blade to make it look metal, just like Adam did with his sword here. This video took me back to that time.

@RyNsWoRLD
@RyNsWoRLD 10 жыл бұрын
all this just goes to show how much easier it is to make this stuff when you have acess to the correct tools, processes and materials. Making halloween costumes for my kid brother would've been so much easier if I had a tenth of the resources that the Mythbusters/ Adam has.
@seigeengine

Lolwut? It's a power drill, a forstner bit, some leather, a fake jewel, and aluminum tape. Nearly everyone has a power drill (or should). Leather, fake jewels, and aluminum tapes should all be readily available at a local craft or hardware store. The only thing iffy is the forstner bits, but again, Adam himself stated that's a $50 investment for a full set of the things, and it's not like there aren't other ways of achieving a similar result.
@RyNsWoRLD
@RyNsWoRLD 10 жыл бұрын
you think a regular £40 cordless could make that bit work? When I was a kid, do you think I had access to drills, leather, glass jewels and $50 worth of drill-bits? of course I didn't...
@seigeengine
@seigeengine 10 жыл бұрын
RyNsWoRLD Probably. Drills? Yeah, sure, why not? Leather, glass jewels, etc? Sure. Why not? $50 worth of specialized drill bits? Maybe not, but there are other ways to do that.
@RyNsWoRLD
@RyNsWoRLD 10 жыл бұрын
Trust me, a standard cordless drill would not stand up to the strain using that drill bit would put it under, let alone in the hands of an inexperienced child. And my dad wasn't about to let me near his proper power tools, either. As for leather/ jewels/ aluminium, I didn't even know where I'd get that stuff if it wasn't just lying around. Didn't have the internet as widespread as it is now. Look, whatever, my point is, most kids don't have £150 to blow on a pretend sword project, or access to the right tools to do it properly. I'm sure that the fact that Adam had some of this stuff around his house as a kid contributed not insignificantly to his adult profession.
@seigeengine
@seigeengine 10 жыл бұрын
RyNsWoRLD Sorry, but yeah, they'd do the job. Then you could have asked, or used a phone book even. I have no idea when you're talking about. And my point is I'm tired of people whining about tools. Tools aren't the problem. Laziness, and incompetence are.

+JakeTheRipper 73 Of course he has. But we want to watch him build one on-camera. I think it would be cool if he did something like that as a challenge. Say, he has a week to collect parts to build a custom lightsaber. OT style: he can attach stuff together and chop stuff down to fit, but no machining custom pieces. Hell, he could probably do it in one day. I bet a guy like Adam has enough vintage flash handles and greeblies hanging around his shop to build 8 or 9 lightsabers.

VoxelGaming These don't really resemble the master sword. The pommel is the wrong shape, the crossguard isn't right, the hilt is too long, it's missing the "cat's eye" jewel at the crossguard, and the blade is the wrong shape at the base.

It's supposed to be based off Gandalfs sword I believe. It doesn't look remotely close to the Master Sword. Everything in it is the wrong look and design for it.
@SharkBait19904
@SharkBait19904 9 жыл бұрын
VoxelGaming I love swords, have none myself but want one. This looks nothing like Links Master Sword. That is fantasy where this looks more real. This wood sword is a long sword though the usually tapper at the hilt where you grab the sword so thick by below the crossguard, and then thin in the middle and then the pommel. So you would grab by the crossguard and then hold grab the pommel. This give more leverage for stronger swings and is how they are meant to be used. This sword is just someone who wanted to make a wooden sword then they just called it "The Hero Sword. So even the Master Sword in Zelda should be a one handed arming sword to make it more realistic.

I remember back in the day all the items required for sword-making was: a yard stick, 1 (or 2) popsicle stick(s) for the cross guard, and a rubber band or string or Elmer's Glue if you had some, to hold the popsicle stick in place. lol Now that was old-school engineering. But the embarrassing thing about it, you'd be playing pirates with your friends, who all have store-bought pirate sword replicas, and here you are... lmao with this home-made p-o-s, and your friends are like: "Dude, who made that?!" And you answer real fast: "It was my dad, dude! Swear to God, it was my dad who made this!" ...And there was always that one skeptical friend: "I thought you said your dad got his hand cut off at work--" "SHUT UP, TONY!!! Are we playing pirates or what?!"

Haha when me and my friends(when we were about 10 or 11) played stuff like that we had some rules set out so no one would get hurt or be stuck with a lame weapon. 1.nothing too sharp and no nut or head strikes or chest hits the few times some of our girl friends joined in. 2.Everyone had to approve the weapon(as in if it was really sketchy and we thought it could hurt someone it wouldn't be allowed. 3. You had to make it with things in my dads shed. One time I made the most badass bow that had long tips(for hitting people with) out of PVC and some carbon rods(to stop the pvc folding) that shot blunt nerf dart tipped arrows(I think I might have a picture) felt like getting shot by an airsoft gun(I never drew the arrow fully duh) and at first everyone was cool with it but after a while when everyone was getting tired etc. they decided it was too dangerous.

Brings back such memories. I did the same foil tape job with two swords made of 1x2 lumber in Jr High. We used them in a performance at a school talent show where I played a king, and an unworthy knight wanted my daughters hand... because we could not think of a better reason to have a sword fight... all was going great until the knight missed his pre-planned block and I clocked him in the side of his head. Amazingly he stayed in character and shook it off. He never spoke to me again though.

That particular make, but there are plenty of other makers out there. I've got half a dozen bokken from different manufacturers, each different, and there are plenty of other wooden swords available, from Tai Chi, Kung-Fu broadswords, medieval, Roman, and I've even seen some rather pretty cavalry sabres. Plus there are some decent polypropylene sparring swords available, Cold Steel and Barringtons sell them.

You know, this is why I like Adam Savage and people like him. That giddy, childlike glee of just... making something cool, because you want to. That kind of energy, coupled with the experience and knowledge of HOW to do it. It's a recipe for amazing props, toys, costumes and decorations.

"If you give a kid something that looks perfect, they don't get anything out of it except the play --which is significant. But when you give them something like this and they can see "oh! its 1 2 3 pieces of wood" then they understand the structure of it, and that could actually cause them to go make one" As a child that grew up making his own toys, this guy literally speaks to my heart. When Mythbusters was canceled years ago, I was really torn up about it. It's literally one of the few shows I watch on cable; and since then for me it was done, because I didn't get any form of closure from it. Then suddenly stumbling on this channel on KZbin, and seeing Adam Savage doing all these 1 day builds literally from scratch, it's like my roots being touched all over again. This is so indescribably pleasant for me. Thank you man, for doing what you do

Just to let ya know, the reason he says apply a lot of downward force is because it's a screw drawn bit. Meaning it pulls itself into the wood to help cut.If you don't it will "Pull" the wood thread it cuts out and will stop cutting. GREAT bit for cutting smooth bore holes. A must have!

Having 2 batteries will get you through a work day. Cordless drills used to be terrible, but lately, it seems batteries are finally getting decent enough on these things.

Also works when you buy a new set of leather boots. I would always buy a pair 1-2 width sizes too small, soak them in warmish water then wear them until they dry. Don't walk around in them as they dry and try to sit in a chair where you can keep your feet flat on the ground. I normally would wait for a day that I could watch sports on TV. You'll have the best fitting boots you will ever own....until the next pair you do it to.

OMG Geek Chic is here in Everett, Washington where I live lol I used to dig around in their scrap wood pile out back at night finding swords that didn't quite make it for one reason or another, but they were good enough for me hahaha I'd be walking around with two or three of those "raw parts," that they had tossed because of one manufacturing mistake or another thinking I was SO cool! It's crazy to see Adam with one of them, I've seen many half made knives and swords in the pile but I've never seen a fully built, finished one until now!

I made a sword out of wood when I was a kid, too. But I kept hitting the conker tree in my back yard with it, and snapped it/ reglued it over and over. One day my dad accidentally burned it on a bonfire while he was a little drunk and getting overzealous with the bits of wood around the garden, which killed me. He was really broken up about it too though, he's not an asshole, lol. I also repaint nerf guns today :D

Geek Chic died in mid-2017. They lost or gave up their website. You can see their website archived here: web.archive.org/web/20170603213556/www.geekchichq.com/ And their 'archived' twitter here: (with cessation announcement) twitter.com/geekchichq No real info about why. Maybe someone got sick, or died, or they had to "give up their hobby" and get a "real job", or someone had a falling out, and/or simple small business failure, which is more common than not.

You can also use that tape to shield the pickup cavities on electric guitars, because the glue on the tape is non-conductive you will have to stipple the tape wherever it overlaps, I used a small nail to do the stippling and used a multimeter to check the continuity of the current. You can buy a roll of aluminium tape that will do a hundred guitars for less than it would cost to do one guitar using copper tape.
