Thank heaven the farmers are coming back around to no chemical food for their feed and making compost. There is way too much food waste in this country, restaurants ,grocery stores that now can be used for a great solution for farmers. Love it

Hello from Texas. We built the ideal BSF box. Saturday evening, placed soaked wood chips in the bottom, then wet rabbit manure, then food scraps and waited for the flies! Next morning, Sunday, checked, and to our horror there were six billion hungry fire ants in residence! Help! Should we leave the experiment as is? Dump the whole thing into a tub of soapy water before burying it? Start over entirely with the legs of the unit in water? Surely other folks have ants attracted to the food stuffs. Somebody make a suggestion quick! Thanks.
@richardjunker282510 жыл бұрын
I think your mistake was the food scraps. When I built mine (I'm in San Antonio) I didn't add any large amounts of kitchen waste until I had a good amount of BSF larvae in there. Our bin is just s 48x48x24 box on the ground with ramps leading out so the grubs can get out and continue the cycle. All I use them for is composting.

Awesome setup. I have been experimenting with BSF raising for a while now, and I just stumbled across your videos. I made a bin with a wooden ramp, and didn't get a lot of success with the crawl off. They seem to like something that can maintain a more moist surface. Are your ramps coated with anything, and what is the angle you are using, roughly?
@NWRedworms12 жыл бұрын
I use regular plywood with nothing special. When they migrate there are so many that they are pushing each other up the ramp. the angle is 30 degrees

Very cool - you're taking what, vegetable scraps?, and turning it into high quality chicken feed and building soil at the same time! All those crawled out in a day? I've got to make a set up like this. I'm new to chickens and relatively new to gardening. I'm going to go see if you have some how to vids and exactly what that setup is doing. I've seen some where the larvae crawl out - when they're ready to be eaten - and drop right into the chicken coop. Checkens are probably just sitting there staring at that tube like a junkie at the dealers house. Come on, come on man, I need my fix. I was watching somebody feed mosquito larvae to fish. There are just so many opportunities to grow high quality protein - and I'm a friggin' vegan. But it's so ecological. All of our solutions are biological and low tech. Or even just physical - like gravity fed irrigation.

good question for no 2 and no 3, its clear here u didnt do any research at all
@deasunja13673 жыл бұрын
Hi Mr. Arsyan, I estimate needing this much BSFl at 42 % protein live weight (in addition to the rest of their balanced diet) For 300 Layers at different Life Stages Week 0 - 6 = 8.16 lbs per day Week 7 -12 = 12.24 lbs per day Weeks 13 - 20 = 11.22 lbs per day Daily for 300 Layers = 90 lbs of feed of which 34 % in my particular ration is the 42 % protein concentrate BSFL or soy (this quantity needed varies based on how much protein is in your other ingredients like wheat or milo or corn etc... but in a mix of milo, barley, oats, aragonite for Calcium, Fertrell Nutribalancer, alfalfa meal and Fertrell enzymes, I'm looking at needing 30.6 lbs of BSFL a day for 300 chickens which EQUALS 0.102 POUNDS OF BSFL PER DAY PER ADULT LAYING CHICKEN. Now if you want to try just feeding them BSFL and whatever they can forage on I am no expert but read that the egg might be not as ideal nutritionally in terms of fat or something and what else I'm not sure but there is literature on this. Harvey Ussery a real Chicken Farmer didn't sound concerned about chickens overeating on BSFL. He would agree I think that a balance is best. Variety, emulating nature where chickens eat plants and bugs etc.... and the biota even in compost like Karl Hammer does in Vermont (compost with excellent amount of food scraps in it) where he raises hundreds of egg layers on compost piles with no supplemental grain, and as he says about the food scraps he collects locally, a piece of lettuce has a much different nutritional profile than a piece of meat.

I love this video. You are so organized. Every time I watch Black Soldier Fly videos I get heepie jeepies but am fascinated too. Your chickens are happy...laughed when that one first came around like feed me...then flew up to get grubs like feed me now!

best to start with lots of young larvae and a small amount of pupa. The young will put out scent to attract the flies back to the compost.

A few quick questions since you are in a similar hardiness zone as me (Finger Lakes), and you seem to be doing very well here! 1) Is this production brought in for winter or is this seasonal? And what would be the lowest temp the BSF can handle. I will hopefully have a greenhouse they can overwinter in. 2) How much food scraps/partial compost are you having to feed them every week? I'm guessing you have more than kitchen scraps going into those bins. 3) what is the sq ft of those two bins combined? It could be the video makes them look smaller but it appears as if ~12-15 sq ft is producing on average 2-3lbs per day of quality fish/bird food?? That's amazing, sign me up! Thanks in advance!
