One passenger has been killed and more than 30 others injured on a Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore hit by severe turbulence.
The Singapore-bound Boeing 777-300ER was diverted to Bangkok and landed at 15:45 local time.
The aircraft was carrying a total of 211 passengers and 18 crew, the airline said in a statement.
"Singapore Airlines offers its deepest condolences to the family of the deceased," it said.

Whether the seat belt sign is ON or OFF, I always wear my seatbelt - unless I am going to the toilet. Seatbelts are lifesavers. Wear it the moment you board the plane and take off when the plane has taxied. It can save your life.

As a frequent international traveler , I think the behaviour of many passengers needs to improve , this is some of the things I have noticed --------when boarding the plane many take huge suitcases on to the plane when the limit is only 7 kilos and they hold up the aisles as they struggling to place their bags in the overhead lockers , they keep talking loud amongst themselves when announcements are made by the crew , they go to the toilets when the plane is about to land or the seatbelts lights are on , as soon as the plane lands they stand up to get their luggage when told to remain seated , they make a complete mess of the bathroom and the bathroom floors when others after them have to use it and lots more things they do wrong to make traveling unpleasant .

yes and of course while we don't know what happened here because there could have been some of the injuries from being in the toilet, I've seen plenty of examples on recent flights of people completely disregarding instructions from cabin crew and ignoring the lighted signs too, keeping laptops out and on tables during landing etc. Some people think they are above rules and they only apply to other people. But they are there to protect everyone on the plane, not just the people who think they'll be fine without adhering to them.

I hate turbulence during flights..One of the worst occurred just after a steep takeoff, when the aircraft hit some turbulence above clouds and started shaking...No problem. Then suddenly, it dropped like a bag of cement, for almost 15 seconds..I was seated by a window and coulf see mountains and forests below approaching.. My goodness, people in the aircraft literally started screaming, THEN the pilot says that he had to decrease altitude because of the initial turbelence. To his vredit, the rest of the flight was pretty smooth.

Seatbelts are to protect you from any sudden violent movement of the airplane...whether that's turbulence, or a hard landing, or a ditching...or a crash. The scenarios in which a seatbelt is going to make your death more likely are significantly fewer than those that will keep your head from smashing against the inside of the fuselage.

After around 11 hours of flying time from take off in London, the aircraft sharply dropped from an altitude of around 37,000 feet to 31,000 feet within just five minutes as it finished traversing the Andaman Sea and neared Thailand, according to FlightRadar 24 data. "Suddenly the aircraft starts tilting up and there was shaking so I started bracing for what was happening, and very suddenly there was a very dramatic drop so everyone seated and not wearing seatbelt was launched immediately into the ceiling," Dzafran Azmir, a 28-year-old student on board the flight told Reuters. "Some people hit their heads on the baggage cabins overhead and dented it, they hit the places where lights and masks are and broke straight through it," he said.

The flight tracks of the preceding days are more or less identical (flight radar 24) i.e . after entering India, traverses just south west of the India Nepal border ,more or less over the river Ganges then over Kolkata , enters The Bay of Bengal , flies close to the Arakan coast (Myanmar) , crosses the Isthmus of Kra (the narrow part of the Malay peninsula) and then onto destination Singapore. In the case of the affected flight , there seems to be a change of course to the right ,over Kolkata (West Bengal, India) and then a diversion towards Bangkok after crossing the Hooghly River delta . The turbulence may have taken place around Kolkata or the India Bangladesh region. There has been some thunderstorm activity here . Just a possibility.

The number of people: 1) Blaming Boeing 2) Saying turbulence is not likely to kill is beyond stupid....How are Boeing meant to counter turbulence. Airbus, Embraer, Bombardier, so on have never made a plane that can combat turbulence, which is incredibly dangerous depending on situation. If people don't mean it like it's Boeing's fault, please clarify a bit clearer because otherwise av-geeks are just gonna spring on you. :) A lot of comments about seatbelts too. Plunging 6/7000 feet in the span of 5 mins is a bit of an achilles heel whether you're wearing a seatbelt or not. Obviously you stand a better chance while wearing a seatbelt, but the strain on the belt could cause a number more problems due to it's rigidity. There's also heart attacks, broken necks, being crushed and many other horrific possibilities. Of course they can fail, and hopefully that isn't the case, but it might just be one of those circumstances which was unavoidable for some people. We'll have to wait and see. I was on a 747 from Milan to PHL. The plane took a nose dive, literally, for a few minutes. It was so severe that the lifeboat fell from the ceiling and all the overhead storage compartments empties out. Fortunately I always wear my seat belt at all times during a flight. The pilot said that the turbulence did not show on navigation. Even if you wear your seat belt loosely that will prevent your head from hitting the ceiling. On a second flight out of PHL to Pittsburgh, 10 minutes into flight pilot announced to prepare for landing and then we hit a severe storm that took out a town outside of Pittsburgh. That plaine made maneuvers I didn't even know a plane could do. I heard a little boy say to his mother, "Mommy, the wings are flapping like a bird." During this whole flight the hostess was on the floor. I held onto to her hand to prevent her from sliding down the aisle.

Well, clearly the plane itself was safe in this instance as it landed safely in Bangkok. Whilst we don't know how or why the person died on the plane, there were others that were injured and some of those may not have been wearing seatbelts at the time or were perhaps hit by something. Nevertheless, that has nothing to do with the safety of the plane itself.

As an ex international flight attendant I know that severe clear air turbulence can strike unexpectedly at any time, which is why it’s so important for pax to keep their seatbelt on, (and 1 of the reasons to never sleep on the aircraft floor.)People are often scathing of pilots’ high salaries, but these pilots earn every cent of their salary when things go wrong. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Boeing or Airbus in situations like this, and Singapore Airlines has a good reputation. My condolences to the loved ones of the deceased. I won’t be jumping to conclusions about why the person tragically passed away in this situation.

The problem with Singapore Airlines, and British Airways, is the seats in economy are so cramped and uncomfortable that it is impossible to remain in them for long without real pain. This leads to people (like me) having to stand in the emergency aisle, or at the back of the plane, just to avoid leg cramps and back pain. Of course, no seatbelt, so this is a danger to anyone out of their seat, and seated passengers. I really think we need to have some kind of legislation on seat sizes / ergonomics - this really is a safety issue now. Yes, you can upgrade to business or premium economy, but who wants to be gouged with that ridiculous pricing...
