One dead, several injured after heavy rain causes roof to collapse at New Delhi airport

At least one person died and several others were injured, after a section of a roof at India's biggest and busiest airport collapsed, following torrential rainfall. Dozens of flights at Terminal 1 of New Delhi's Indira Gandhi airport were cancelled or delayed. The Indian capital saw record-breaking rainfall today, inundating parts of the city and stalling traffic. Many opposition leaders have slammed the ruling Modi government for their ill-preparedness, amid the multiple extreme weather events hitting swathes of the country in recent months. Neha Poonia reports.

Collapsed roof after rainfall and prior incidents of same suggests shoddy construction. What was the damage in previous occasions? Who certified the prior incidents? Who did the repairs? How old is the structure? It is not hard to find where the constructional defects were. What was the constructional requirements of different support members as presented by constructional engineer who had built the structure? Time to pull out the original blueprints to determine the submitted dementions of the structural members and the present constructural dimensions. Cost considerations may have forced the contractors to use different dimensions causing inadequacy to tolerate the roof loads.

In short, it seems like Indian engineering companies aren't doing a good job with safety and quality checks, even though they have smart engineers with good degrees. It's like having gold that's not really pure - smart people but with poor intentions or execution. Kathmandu Nepal
