Well, relatively at the beginning he tried but it really wasn’t great. I still think they could have just skipped him. Liam had just the most competent and full rounded voice, although Harry-despite some accuracy issues- had already a great vibrato and great tone, also he was able to take over the rockier shorty parts. Zayn lacked a bit of stamina in his voice but was able to do the quieter parts phenomenally and some great runs, Niall didn’t have any vibrato or special sound to his voice but fit hit all the notes. The 4 of them really deserved their spot in my opinion!

I don’t think people realize that Louis voice is what makes the Chorus of 1D songs sound so good. I watched a video where he couldn’t be at a performance because he was sick, and it sounded so bland. I jumped on the bandwagon right around the time the first album released, and it’s interesting to see how Liam began as the lead but with every album, it became more Zayn or Harry, depending on the song up until Zayn left. Liam started as the most polished and pitch perfect but Zayn and Harry always had more pleasant tones, so in my opinion, when they got their pitch problems under control, their producers or whoever was in charge recognized that Harry and Zayn’s voices were actually superior to Liam’s because an interesting tone plus good pitch is what makes for an all around good vocalist🤷🏼‍♀️ that’s what I think happened at least, could be wrong!

Liam and Harry were clearly the standouts early on, with Liam having the best trained voice and Harry being the best performer. Zayn clearly had a good voice but always seemed so shy and awkward. Louis is just so adorable and happy to be there. I was honestly shocked by how bad Niall was on early on - he stood out in a bad way, but steadily improved as time went on.
