This was a month after Zayns eating disorder and his mental health was at its worst. He said that November 2014 was the worst month for his health and anxiety. My apologies - what follows is a incredibly long comment. If anyone reads it all, I hope it will show how special Story of My Life is to me. (RIP Liam). I first heard this song when One Direction sang it on SNL on Dec 7, 2013. I believe it was released a couple months prior to the SNL performance and I have no idea why I hadn’t heard it until that night. It’s now a core memory that’s bittersweet. I have to start the story by saying that I was having an annual Christmas party with 7 girls that I considered to be like sisters to me. We’d been getting together the first Saturday in December (usually at my home) since 2003. At the same time, my beloved 15-year-old dachshund, George, had been sick. The vet told us the Wednesday before it was his gallbladder and antibiotics would help. By Saturday, it was clear that he was very ill and it went beyond an issue with his gallbladder. He had stopped eating & drinking, and wasn’t acting like himself at all. Had I realized how serious his condition was sooner, I would have cancelled the party. No doubt about it. It was heart wrenching. He was my canine soulmate & my ride or die, and he’d been by my side through thick & thin, sick & sin. I couldn’t fathom life without him. My friends knew how important he was to my husband and especially to me. I was his person. He was my lifeline during rough patches with “Mr. So Wrong” prior to meeting my husband in 2000, stressful days at work, and health problems that started in 2005 and kept going & going until I was diagnosed with MS and other health issues. Despite knowing George was really sick and I was distraught, the girls were determined to have an all-night booze fest & to drink alcohol like it was being outlawed the next day. I definitely wasn’t riding the party train that night. I don’t blame them because in years past, I’d been an active participant (and often was the instigator) of the Jello Shot challenge, drinking games designed to get everyone wasted, the “party hearty” vibe, dance offs, and a general atmosphere of a frat party (without the frat bros.) Granted, in previous years, we also bonded as we talked, opened gifts, shared funny stories about each other, and enjoyed all the great food. I had decided in Feb 2023 that at 43, I needed to significantly cut down on how much I drank at social gatherings. Not only had my hangovers become severe & lasted for a few days, I realized that I was simply a better person when I drank 0-2 drinks rather than copious amounts of shots, several cocktails, beer after beer, and/or a bottomless glass of red wine. I saw a video of a previous Christmas party & was stunned to see what a complete unlikable ass I could be when I was drunk, how I made everything about alcohol, and how utterly stupid I looked & acted. My friends didn’t pressure me to drink, but they frequently made comments that they missed “drunk Elle” who had been the life of the party. We were on separate pages because I wanted to talk, play Cards Against Humanity & a custom game we’d made years prior, open our white elephant gifts, and munch on the amazing spread everyone brought potluck style. I didn’t mind the drinking but I wanted to keep our traditions intact. They wanted an alcohol fueled slumber party and our yearly traditions didn’t seem like they mattered. I changed - they hadn’t. Except that night they all seemed hell bent on getting so drunk they either passed out, blacked out, or spent the night praying to the porcelain gods. Anyway, we have a hot tub on our deck, and we live in an area where there aren’t any street lights and very little noise from neighbors or traffic. It was a perfect December night with gorgeous views of the blanket of stars, the bright moon, and trees covered in freshly fallen snow. I didn’t blame them at all for wanting to get in the hot tub around 10ish. (The party started around 8 pm or so.) I thought it would be an hour or so in the hot tub tops. BUT, 10ish became 11ish and none of them showed signs of wanting to go back inside. In the hot tub, they were drinking (and spilling) a mix of beverages from cocktails, beer, & wine. They were smoking cigarettes (even though only one was an actual smoker) and ashes were flying everywhere. They were group singing (with no music) to songs by everyone from Prince, Micheal, & Madonna to Lady Gaga, Miley, Pink & Eminem. I shivered in a towel on a lounge chair. They seemed set on staying in despite my encouragement and repeated suggestions to go back inside because the water had gotten cold, they looked like prunes, and we hadn’t done any of our Christmas traditions like playing games & a present exchange. They continually opted to stay in the hot tub and I’d had enough. I excused myself to go check on George & my husband upstairs. My hubby always made himself scarce at the parties, but was willing to take pics or help with something if asked. Otherwise, he stayed upstairs in a room with a couch & TV. I hadn’t seen George in a couple hours & he seemed to have declined even more in that short time. We tried to feed him his favorite foods but he wouldn’t eat. We were both beyond sad because it didn’t seem possible that he would bounce back from this illness. My hubby had SNL on and One Direction preformed Story of My Life. For some reason, it touched me to the core. Now, I am always transported back to that specific place & time every time I hear it. After the performance, I watched the music video. Oh my heart. Seeing pictures of every member of One Direction with family members in earlier times followed by current pictures in the same poses was so touching. I couldn’t hold back my tears, especially when a family member was missing from the recreated photo. Death is a fact of life - that’s true - but it doesn’t soften the gut punch when a loved one (spouses/partners, family, friends, pets, etc.) is taken from this world leaving a gaping hole in the “story of your life.” One thing I should add is that we share our property with my mom. Her home is a stone’s throw from ours. We are so fortunate to have her next door. (My husband would absolutely agree.) She is a widow who makes the best out of the hand she’s been dealt and is such a kind, generous, positive lady. We help her and she helps us. Her husband of 25 years was her soulmate, and he passed away in 2005 from a fairly short illness (CJD). Two years after his passing, she moved to our town. The hot tub on our deck is fairly close to mom’s bedroom window, and loud voices & laughter carry easily when people are outside. Mom has told me that she doesn’t mind if I host the party if it isn’t a “free for all” and doesn’t have outdoor partying well into the night. I went to bed at 12:30 am with my precious fur goblin asleep on my chest. The girls stayed in the hot tub until after 4 am and - not kidding - sang Gaga’s You & I acappella at least 10 times back to back. And they screwed up the lyrics every damn time. I know I should have told them to come inside before midnight and to keep the noise levels down. My only defense is that I was paralyzed with grief and was so focused on the sweet fur goblin on my chest. Still, not fair to my mom at all. I found them to be disrespectful of mom, my husband, and me - not to mention that they knew how sick G was. The next day, after they left, I looked at the hot tub. It was pinkish from the wine, smelled like beer, and had cigarettes and empty beer bottles & cans all around it. We had to drain it, scour it, refill the water, & add fresh chemicals plus pick up outside & clean almost every room. On Monday, we had to say goodbye to my bestest boy and we lost a doggie that had been a fixture in our lives. Oh, the pain of losing a best friend who freely gave unconditional love, complete support, and constant entertainment. I also lost 7 friends after that night because I nicely told them I couldn’t host again or at least rotate from house to house each year. Opened my eyes to the fact that I was the friend who provided a great place to party, and without that my value was diminished. I have two wonderful best friends plus my family (including superstars like my husband, mom, dad and father-in-law, sisters, brothers-in-law, and nieces & nephews. The Story of My Life still makes me weepy, appreciative of the 15 years I had with George, and grateful that I narrowed my circle to exclude people who don’t respect my family, my home, or me. One last thing, I asked George to take some time away from playing & relaxing at the Rainbow Bridge to send us our next doggie. Soon after, a perfect-for-us female puppy, Heidi, came our way. Two years after that, G led us to a puppy for mom, Holly. The girls are so different than George with their own unique personalities. He picked well. Our Story of My Life picture looks different than it did when we had George. We’ve added not only doggies, but also brother-in-laws, & 11 nieces & nephews. We’ve lost my step-dad, my husband’s brother, and my husband’s mom. The story changes… but the fact remains that there’s so much love in every era. Again, RIP to Liam. He will be missed by many, and it’s hard to process that the Story Of My Life snapshot of One Direction from their SNL performance would be missing Liam if a current picture were to be taken. I just want to see them happy... :( I don't mind if they take a break for a year or so, but it's hard for me to see them unhappy and we can clearly see that they're very-very tired, especially Zayn and Harry. They've given us 4 albums in 4 years, they're on tour non-stop, I'm not surprised they're exhausted. ♥

Yes me too I really think they should take a break.. maybe 2 or 3 months. but that's not happening, is it? they're about to start touring again and they've been working on the fifth album already.. management should let them rest. they, too, are humans. they get tired and stuff

They finished WWWT in October, they didn't even have 6 months to rest, because now they've been already getting ready for the next one... :'( I thought they would take a break after the fourth album, and take more time on the fifth album, as they said in an interview, but I guess that's not what's happening... :((( Poor babies.
