That was a fun video. With all that experience you've gained in the last 10 years, along with those grey hairs; I would love to see you go back with some of that old gear. Try it out again and see how much better you've become with all that knowledge. Take that speedlight, the camera, the lens (maybe upgrade the lens for fun?) and do a similar shoot but not quite the same. Picking your best background. The experienced model. Maybe adding a speedlight or two for separation or other techniques you've picked up and used often in the last 10 years... Definitely adding the fog 😏
@GavinHoey2 жыл бұрын
Great idea Brad. From memory the shutter mechanism failed on my Canon 5D mark2 and the aperture diaphragm motor stopped working on the Canon 28-105mm lens. The 580EXii speedlight survived (and is in a box somewhere) until I upgraded it with 2.4ghz Flashpoint Li-ION speedlights.
@brad_in_yyc2 жыл бұрын
@@GavinHoey Wow, you sure got your use out of that gear! That's impressive. I'm sure we can find you some similar gear to back then or even earlier. Like your 60D and a similar lens (I think you had one) or something. It'll really show your progression if someone keeps pushing to better themselves. Plus you've got great teaching skills too!

Ten years, two tips from another photographer who is getting wiser and older. 1) Knee pads work great at keeping the joints pain free. 2) When ambling about with you camera on location a monopod makes you look so professional but also helps steady not only the camera but the photographer too.

I enjoy your posts Gavin, and I enjoy my photography too. It's only in recent years (68) that I have been lucky enough to own the equipment to do this type of thing HSS until a few weeks ago was still a mystery. There is one statement for you and one question. 1) Getting a flash unit that goes low enough in power is very important (I missed that and need less power than I have sometimes), and. Remembering the technical reasons for settings is a real good way to get headaches, did you ever find that? Thanks for the education.
@GavinHoey2 жыл бұрын
Hi John. The headaches go the more you use the knowledge. Agree about the low end power being underated. There are hacks like extra fabric, bigger light modifiers and adjusting the light to subject distance but all have consequences.

Canon 600EX II Speedlite is probably the nearest equivalent to what I owned and used back in 2012 and today it's $499 + batteries + mount. Either way the choice of flash today is unbelievable and there's a light out there for every price point and photography style.
