I believe it's either tap harmonics he's doing or a synth or keyboard doing the intro. It's impossible to play really live, that's why in live vids he really never does it, however, I did see a YT vid recently where I see Billy tapping at his strings in the intro, tap harmonics a la Eddie Van Halen, however, you can't really hear it. Again, really impossible to do live and hence why only in the studio is really where Billie could pull it off.
