Thank you so much. I live in Callawassie Golf Community with a great tennis community. I'm sort of a 3.5 who cant get to 4.0 due to weak backhand. I just loved this video and have jotted down steps, have the dots on my right hand, and am going out to the ball machine and cant wait to practice. The Pro here always reminds me to swing and finish high. Now I now the three steps to get there and the great finish steps. Rock on. In Tennis!! Thanks alot. I just pinned 2Minute Tennis. Finally I found the holy grail of my old-style backhand. I am no Thiem nor Wawrinka. Modern beginners almost never think of using the knee bend. Some coaches tell their chest open up and face the net at finish, rotating torso even dragging the left foot to the side. It is so easy for beginners to get wrong ideas by watching the pros superficially.

The best thing I can say about Ryan and his strategies is that they are for everyone! I have found a lot of tennis coaches that are a bit let's say "arrogant", and just expect that the explanation they give you should make sense, and if it doesn't your "obviously not good enough", however Ryan answers any of your questions, and no question is every too stupid. He also loves the sport so much so that he wants everyone to go out and enjoy playing, despite what level you are at. And he is genuinely excited to hear about your progress. He is more innovative and motivated than many other coaches therefore that's why he gets so much positive feedback. And it is well deserved!

You have forever fixed my serve mechanics, Backhand and Overhead. Unbelievable! For 40 years, I thought I knew what I was doing but was only deluding myself. My Backhand was a mess. I didn’t really know what I was doing until I saw your video and watched it several times. It made a lot of sense and so I practiced it three days ago. On the third day (today ), I used it in my doubles match. Awesome. The Overhead was another skill I had difficulty with until I watched your video. Amazing now ! But the technique I really wanted desperately to fix and own was the serve ... and I have you to thank you for. Like I said, the serve had been my nemesis for 40 years. But not anymore. What made it possible for me to have it was all because of your “birthday hat” analogy. The moment I saw that, my Brain kicked in. I saw it. This was a two weeks ago and I practiced it during the day at the club and at night (shadow practice) at home. I must’ve put in a hundred hours just on the mechanics. It was like an awakening. Thank you so much Ryan. I couldn’t have done it without you.

I felt that you have more flexibility when the ball comes near you. Years later after no tennis :-( I want to pickup where I left. I feel I can do it, but know that technique is key. You have to train your muscle memory first to do exactly what is explained here. Have been practicing in my living room as I type this. Thanks for the good info. Greetings from Belgium!

This video is unbelievably instructive 😊 one biggest issue I've seen at the rec level for the 1HBH along with the "strings to the sky", and a mistake I used to always make, is trying to flex the wrist out too soon upon making contact with the ball, to resemble the Dimi/Wawa finish. The contact and finish have such a fast transition, that they almost look like one motion, so players get caught between the motions and don't finish the follow-through properly, which can cause injury. By watching analyses of Stan's BH instead of just trying to copy via tv, it actually helped remedy that by paying more attention to my loading and dropping stages prior to contact. Breaking down the basic motion of each stroke allows for a more natural replica, and this video captures it. The finish you demonstrate reminds me of the one I was originally taught from a former player, Bill Behrens, for a short while some years ago. Also Ljubicic-esque.

The total kinetic chain explained as well as I've ever seen. The tip on the drop getting the right bevel of the racquet alone is priceless, seems so obvious when you see it demonstrated in order to be able to arc over the ball, but an ephifamy to me as something you have to consciously get right (until it becomes a reflex) to have an effective 1HBH drive. Also, I need to check that my grip is diagonal across bevel 1 and not parallel.

Amazing analysis, Ryan. I don't think many viewers appreciate how much preparation goes into each one of your videos --- the sequencing (including check-points), the mechanics of the body (joints, balance), and the physics of ball-striking (spin, power, follow-through) & trajectory (direction, consistency). I appreciate it!

Your method is doing that exactly.

Ryan, I found this video so helpful! I think your emphasis on checkpoints and video analysis is really valuable. I mount my phone on a tripod and review my backhand stroke checkpoint-to-checkpoint, repeating as needed until I see I'm executing the complete stroke accurately and consistently. Video analysis reveals defects that one might otherwise not recognize, especially on a relatively complex stroke such as the one-handed backhand. In the past, I found this incredibly helpful to improve my serve and video analysis with your checkpoint explanation is helping me now to clean up my one-handed backhand. I'm committed to making my backhand into an offensive part of my game and excited to work on it as a result of what you've shared. Awesome coaching!
