Thanks! Great information! At 70 years old I am in a similar physical situation as you. Also like you, I enjoy shooting my cap & ball revolvers too much to quit. The last few years have been dedicated to the type of training you mention with both hands, so my practical accuracy has improved even if my "bullseye" shooting is not as quite as good. I'll take it!!

Good video. I had someone give me a similar recommendation years ago in regards to learning to hold an M1 Garand on target. His advice was to aim at a designated item or spot for one minute. Then relax for a few seconds and then do it again. Do this for half an hour a night or however long you can before becoming too tired to hold on target. You will eventually build up muscle memory and be able to hold on target consistently without being tired or moving the weapon around.

At 74 I have a few years on you, also having many medical problems, including arthritic hands, to boot. In European 25 metre Competitions either BP or modern cartridge pistols its always single handed shooting (except practical pistol of course). However since tearing my R/H shoulder rotator cuff tendon some years ago my Walker Colt and Ruger Old Army have stayed unused in my gun cabinet. But I will try your method as even normal revolver shooting is difficult now and see if I can get any improvement -- I'm not wanting to give up shooting just yet. Great video. 👍

Hi Jay, great timing for this video. I had been thinking of doing some kind of muscle training over the Autumn & Winter ..... and you come up with a great idea, I'm only a couple of years older than you, no sports injuries but too much time working in an office. Its not a difficult decision for what Revolver I'll use, definitely the Ruger :) I will start tomorrow, Cheers Chris

I've been thinking it over, what you said is totally true, it is best that a serious shooter should take the next step to the next level of difficulty, shooting with one hand is a hard thing to master, however, when you get results of progress,, that adds confidence and that is 80% of all sports. So I do not sound like a know it all, or I'm the best shot in the world, Many Champion pistol shooters (Where one handed is required) agree on three levels of importance in this order (1) Consistent site alignment, it keeps the shot linear and true when you aim and follow through and that is a must, aim at the blur of the bull and never bounce back and forth from sights and target, never concentrate on the target (Even between shots) (2) Constant grip (Without shaking) and locking up your wrist and your elbow as much as you can, (3) Stance in a way to your natural point of aim with your hand extended out in front of you using NO muscular strength to keep it one way or another left or right. So, This was great instruction and I stand and applauded this demonstration, Great video, keep up the good work, Peace - Dave

Thank you Dave!!! Such a good and informative post!!! I wish I had said it as clearly as you! But…in my opinion you have it perfect..I just love the challenge…the challenge to work toward mastery of those elements, even if I will never get to champ level…a great challenge keeps me young, gives goals, and makes it worth it. I don’t care if I’m a champ…but I care that I do the best I can given my circumstances. Thanks for the great message.

Being an old retired peace officer, I carried a gun everyday. I trained everyday as well. When not on the range, in my garage with Speer plastic wadcutters. One handed hip shooting and two handed combat shooting. Beyond 20 ft, it was two hands. Decades formed my "style" and it doesn't change much with any type handgun. Do I use a conventional stance? Nope, I use what works for me. Now in my mid 70s, with nerve damage in my hands, it's downright difficult to hold a weapon due to loss of feeling. So I shoot the best I can with what I've got. And when some youngster says my form sucks, I smile and say "I've walked away from three shootings, one with two suspects at 20 ft. Can you say the same?" Then I'm looking at a blank expression. 😐 J, you use whatever works for you. And forget about what anybody says about form and such. You're achieving the results you want and what what's more important... you're having fun at it!👍 Stay well and enjoy your pistolas.😉

I was taught to shoot pistol by my grandfather (retired state trooper) and my father. I was taught to shoot one handed un a traditional traget shooter stance. And ive shot this way other then magnum pistols all my life. At the range people might talk about the dueling stance, left arm behind the back, turned sideways, rught arm fully extended. But then they see the target. Am i a champion shooter? Hardly. Are my groups good? Yes. And all rounds on target. Aiming straight down your arm like your pointing at the target works

Great video, I like the idea of strength training, I am living with a permanent sholder injury that limits movement. I would like more information on follow through, I know that I am flinching as the cap goes off and I can't see anything from the smoke. Any advice will be appreciated

Thanks Sam. I have a hard time with that as well…the part about exaggerated firm grip and staying in place without moving until you hear or see the target hit. Exaggerate how long you hold after the bang. But I think most of the issue…for me..comes from a loosening of my grip firmness at the bang. So hold on tight for say 1-2 seconds after the bang.

Lol. We have a lot in common. Pitched from the time I was 7 till I was 21. My right shoulder is gone. My brother signed with the Phillies with Marty Bystrom in the late 70’s. He developed bursitis as a catcher and his career ended as fast as it started.

@@CapBallFanatic-gb3jb I helped coach my sons high school team. They wouldn’t let a kid pitch more than 3 innings. I played same time period as you. We use to pitch an entire game unless we were just having a bad night. During playoffs we’d sometimes pitch 2 full games in one weekend. I go to throw the ball for my dogs and my right shoulder makes all kind of grinding noises. And hurts.

I have the same problem with my left as you do with your right. That was my catching hand ... luckily my shooting hand is my right. UNLUCKILY, I also have been a fighter, a cyclist(not by choice), have astigmatism and a crushed left orbital bone, am held together by scar tissue, have had arthritis since I was 10(rheumatic and corticoliod arthritis) and I am a single man who cares for a bunch of animals. Also, I'm 37... I shouldn't be this beat up, but I am. I might live another forty years, but I don't see that being out of a wheelchair for much longer. You're not as bad off as you think.
