I'm an instructor in Texas. It is perfectly legal to aim a gun at someone threatening you with a knife. It's also unwise not to. You did what you needed to survive and won. Congrats! Hope you called the police.

This is an awesome story man, and you told it well. It shows a handgun is a strong deterrent, and you don’t always need to pull the trigger for it to be effective, yet you had the ability to if it came down to it. It seems you handled it very well, especially for being only 18 at the time.

Exactly. I want to get people away from the mindset of feeling like they always have to shoot. So many crimes are deterred by the mere presentation of the handgun, and we should strive to preserve human life as best we can. Thanks for watching!

So Glad you had the gun within easy reach! Weird guy could have taken your life like you said so easily! Back in the 60s, I was only 12, and my Uncle lived on a farm near Vernon, Texas, and he helped me learn to lead my shots. That was with a rifle. He was an excellent shot. I was one a 22, or a 410 shotgun chasing rabbits to eat for supper. Much later when I became 21 and had moved to California, I bought a Ruger Service-Six in 357. Awesome revolver! Also had to pull it out once against 2 gang members right in front of my house. They were in a car. I was in my yard not far away at all. No one was hurt, but 3 shots were fired straight up in the air from his gun. They left. We called the police and reported them. Nothing more came of it.

l got a Belgian malinois a few years back and he rides along in the back of my Mercedes. Nobody approahes us like this now and l can get out and leave the car running without fear that somebody would be dumb enough to try and open the door and get in.If that happened ole hahn would drag him out before he killed him so as not to get any blood on the seats....

I liked the fact that the gun wasn't produced until the threat was imminent, that shows proper restraint. Do you find that you carry on your person instead of in your vehicle after this incident? Something similar happened to me and I had to change my method of carry.

For an 18 year old man, you handled that situation perfectly! The main thing is to keep every one as calm as possible, you did it. Situational awareness, you was on it! When I was 18, I can honestly say that I wouldn't have performed as well as you did. I had a similar experience happen to me about 15 years ago. I hadn't started carrying then and all I had on me was a buck knife on my waist in a holster. I was pumping gas in my truck when a car pulled up on the other side of the island and asked me for directions. I knew something was wrong because his license plate had the same county as mine. His buddy came out of the passenger side telling me to give up my wallet.. My heart was racing my sight started to form a funnel and all I could see was him reaching in his waist to pull what I assumed was a gun. I pulled my bic lighter out of my coat pocket and pulled the nozzle out of my tank and I threatened them to die a terrible death over 20 bucks, I pointed the hose right at him with lighter in hand and he said you're a crazy mfer and ran for the car and they peeled out. I felt so full of adrenaline that when it was over I felt sick.

Bro god works in crazy way I was in a similar situation where I was at a function and people started arguing and I went outside to my car “instinctually” once at my car a guy came up and grabbed my shirt and put a gun in my face. He was standing between me and my drivers door with a pistol in my face holding me by my shirt. Once everything went down I was so lucky because I was in my car I had no duty to retreat in my state. Your body knows what to do faster than you are aware of what you did. Shit happens fast. that’s why I always park strategically and leave people alone!

It was coherent enough man. There is nothing to be said against any of your actions besides clapping 👏. Keeping a level head in a very scarry and uncalled for situation. Managing to use the minimum amount of "force"/intimidation to remove the threat...perfect example of self defence! I can only estimate from my experience that 80% of the people, at least, would not have handled it as well as you did. Kudos, and thanks for sharing.

I was stunned at how composed you were in not pulling that trigger in light of the situation you found yourself in. You are 100% correct with regard to divine intervention. When I carry, I pray that the Lord keep me out of situations where I would have to use my shield. "For some reason they just took off running" They took off because they are cowardly trash who wanted to threaten a nice young couple with death and perhaps more than threaten, and they realized that it wasn't going to be anything near a one sided affair. I admire you for your compassion and empathy. I like to think I have a measure of both as well. I can't say what I'd do in the situation, but my instinct is, once someone decides to put me in fear of my life or that of my loved ones, offswitch as soon as I can hit it. Not to punish, not to be punitive, not to be bloodthirsty, but because I am not going to risk innocent people trying to figure out what some guy is going to decide he wants to do. He created the situation, chips fall. Your situation turned out as well as could have been hoped for, for everyone. Only way it could have been better is if you already had a full tank and kept rolling.

You handled your first (and hopefully only) self defense situation a lot better than I did. My first time was near SLC. I was sitting in my car at night in a dark parking lot eating my greasy meal. (I know…stupid me). When out of nowhere some guy tries to get into my passenger side door. It’s locked of course and he started aggressively trying to get the door open. I pulled out my firearm and I tried to keep it hidden from him but he saw it. I kind of froze. I knew I couldn’t engage until he entered my vehicle so I just sat there thinking ’now what?’ He looked at the firearm then looked at me. He then put both of his hands up, turned away, and walked away into the dark. It took me awhile to realize my car was running and there was nothing blocking me in. I could have (and should have) just stuck the car in drive and drove away. It’s amazing how your normal ability to think changes when you’re scared and faced with an attacker. I hadn’t prepared mentally or emotionally for these kind of encounters. My second time, again near SLC, I had better situation awareness and recognize the threat approaching. Once I knew he was following me I was able to make a turn and loose sight of him for a minute. I took advantage of it and RAN. Made a hard turn onto another street and hid in the bushes. Once he made the turn I could see him from the bushes. He was looking around trying to figure out where I went. I was packing that night too. Just didn’t want to be in a tight situation if I could of avoid it.

Incredible brother! That’s a heck of a story. You can call divine intervention (which it definitely is), but I would also say it is equally a young man being prepared and being in control of his own fate to the best of his ability. Good job man. That is awesome that in Texas you can carry a pistol in your truck at 18, I’m sure your story isn’t the only one like it. I’m in Florida and we also have very pro self-defense legislation as well. It really helps when I’m doing late-night service calls at industrial complexes all across Florida, in the worst parts of cities, knowing I have the means to protect those around me. I couldn’t imagine living in place knowing only the lawless have access to firearms. Mind boggling. P.s. Thank god you didn’t have to use your weapon.

Crazy man. When I was 18, I was working at a tire shop. I was the only tech left (9pm ish) and one new guy working inside. I left one door open, just before we closed and bam. 2 guys rush in with pistols and straight to my head it goes. I have carried almost everyday since I turned 21 and got my concealed. I’m 33 now. I got lucky, but if there is a next time, I’m a little more prepared. It changed everything for me so I totally understand. I was a supporter, loved shooting, etc. but it just changed my outlook to be even more of a prepared citizen

Fantastic story and thank you very much for sharing! That situation could have deteriorated very quickly and it's a good thing that both you and your date had at least some sense of situational awareness and she sensed that something wasn't right and alerted you too that possibility. Having good situational awareness and as it's said, having your head on a swivel is so very important. Y'all are very lucky and I am so glad to hear that it turned out ok and this encounter definitely changed your attitude and attention to the investment of training and taking your self defense very serious. Simple tasks like filling your truck with gas or sitting in a drive thru or carwash can be some of the most dangerous and opportune times for car-jacking or robbery to take place and most people are so wrapped up with their phone or their conversation at the time that they don't even see or sense the threat until it's too late. It's so very important to always always stay vigilant and aware of your immediate surroundings and take inventory of who and what are around you and look for escape routes and alternate ways of egress. The most important thing is if something doesn't feel right, just keep going, your gut is usually right. Stay armed, stay safe and thank you again for sharing! God bless!

I defended myself best i could. When i was able to get him off me and get up he ran and jumped in a car that was waiting for him. 25 stitches on my left pinky finger and 27 staples under my armpit they didnt stich my elbow said theyd rip out. He did manage to catch the inside of my ear and it barley scrapped it. Lesson i learned was it can happen anywhere anytime any condition. Now im prepared.

About 10 feet away from her Is holding a knife. I see three other people behind him and one person (deceased) on the ground. I had her call 911 as i held the one man at gunpoint. Police showed up and eventually arrested all 4..... one that night and the three others a week later. My pistol and bright flashlight saved two lives that day..... i wish they saved all three.

Well done. I am glad you didn't have to shoot. I am even more glad that if you did have to shoot, you could, and would. I really only have one thing even slightly negative to say, if you choose to take it that way, but it is more like advise that could save you a lot of legal hassles. Never think "might have to kill someone" or say "had to kill him" or anything like that. It's not about killing. Your objective is to eliminate the threat. In this case it would have been to render your attacker unable to continue the attack, or unwilling to do so. Your attacker wisely decided he was unwilling to do so, and that's great, but if he had forced your hand then your use of your weapon would properly have been to render your attacker unable to continue or to carry out his threat. Your point of aim, as per your training, would have still been center of mass. His chance of surviving would still have been exactly the same. Your words can be just as important as you deeds, though, and you never know when an overzealous prosecutor will decide to make you the cause celebre for his election to higher office or to get a cushy job in the Biden anti-gun anti-liberty anti-People administration. Even a perfectly righteous shooting can easily cost you $10k in legal expenses. When you leave an opening for an enemy of liberty to put a bad spin on your words and presumably thoughts and motives, juries can react in funny ways. Every homicide gets reviewed by a grand jury. Most obviously justifiable ones get no-billed. You never go to trial. You get your 10 minutes of fame on the local news and then it's back to life as usual. But you never know. Take care about what you say, to cops who respond, to reporters, on your youtube channel, everybody. Not that i always agree with experts or self proclaimed experts, but they do mostly say don't even answer questions until (1) you talk to your lawyer, and (2) you have at least 24 hours to decompress from the incident. You might just meet a cop who needs to make an arrest, or who hates the idea of The People being armed better than him, or thinks an 18yo kid has no business with a gun, whatever. That's a bad start. Not being arrested is by far the best way to begin your trip through the legal minefield. I am no lawyer. But ask a lawyer who specializes in defensive shootings and I would be very surprised if he told you any different. As for your actions, you did good. Good weapon retention posture and presentation, good guard on your GF, good waiting to produce a weapon, good keeping your cool, good all around.

The 2nd amendment is not just a amendment, it’s a life saver to innocent and good people like you. I don’t like problems or anything but it’s the unfortunate reality we live in today.

Dude, it just may have been divine intervention that made that guy take off. By your story, you're clearly a child of God so perhaps He spared you from the trauma of taking a life. Needless to say, your date at the time was with the right guy. There are unhinged, crazy and just plain mess up hateful people out there, and some of them will direct that element toward you. You have to be ready to act at all times, as your story proves. Lastly, how the hell can anyone 'thumbs down' this vid? Just confusing, man. Thank God you survived. Peace and God bless.

Very stressful for a young guy to go through. Props to you for protecting your girl 👧! Maybe it helped her think of you more than a “date”?

Always call the police at your first SAFE opportunity if you have to draw your gun our threaten too. Someone may call first and turn the story all around so you are the bad guy. Also that man needed to be taken off the streets. He could have gone on down the road and killed somebody else. I’m not criticizing you at all. You were incredibly brave and had a tremendous amount of heart and presence of mind for an 18 year old or anyone for that matter.

Good job brother on handling your situation. We have such a bad homeless problem in our state. I never leave the house without my firearm. It is sad what this world has turned into with crazy people on drugs running around trying to rob people. The police in our city are very understaffed so too many people get away with bad crimes. I am always on the lookout when it comes to visiting the city to pick up groceries.

A couple of observations. In that you were quite young when this occurred [ 18 ], both of those clowns at the gas station were sizing you up, and believed you would be a push over. As soon as you saw the knife, you had every justification to shoot, the perp being within a few steps of you and your female companion. Not saying you should have, just that you would have been justified in doing so. This is why I highly recommend that those who choose to carry a firearm for protection go out, right now, and get trained by those who have a background in fighting with firearms. Having the skill and knowledge to make timely decisions is key. It's a good day when just displaying a firearm wins the day, but that isn't always the case. Violent criminals and those who are violently demented don't think like ordinary folks, that's why they are who they are. Good story, glad it came out in your favor. Stay aware and safe.

On this side is crazy. A cop killed a criminal and the criminal because a hero. We do need more firearms to protect us.

glad it came out great for you. when you saw that knife out and up that is a threat to you, trying to deescalate is admirable but like you said that close is an imminent threat of death. you are deffinetly justified no matter what you had chosen, all though you seem to have made the right chose considering no one including the attacker got hurt that day.

Great story man and great job. It’s tough to say what anyone would do the in the heat of the moment. But that’s why we train and better ourselves. Because even if it never happens God Willing, if it does we’ll have that muscle memory down.
