Did this pass last week, South to North, fully loaded at the end of a 300 mile ride from Croatia. It was scary. The southern forest section was particularly tight with absolutely no room for error. Would I do it again.... Maybe.

Yesterday I was on this pass (from Ponte Di Legno to Santa Caterina) in a car. The funniest thing is I hadn’t known that Google Maps would direct me through this road. It was FUCKING scary but yet very very exciting! One bad manouver and you’re gone! This morning I went through famous Stelvio Pass - views and corners are better on Stelvio but the wilderness, narrower roads and absolutely no safety precautions (bariers etc.) of Gavia made me much more excited! Breathtaking experience!

I'll probably try and tackle this one in my MX5 either this year or next year. Will definately be going slower because there is no way my little car can do these speeds, and I can imagine oncoming traffic will be quite a pain in a car on this narrow road. Have you ever been to Hahntennjoch or Timmelsjoch? If you haven't I highly recommend them. I drove some passes last year and those two were absolute gems. Nice driving roads with beautifull scenery. Timmelsjoch is quite busy though, which is a bit of a downside.

My absolute favorite road, anywhere. I ride Harley's so my riding style, speed and handling are completely different than yours on Gavia Pass! Having ridden this road a lot, I watched the video with fond memories and a smile on my face, and then read your notes - a 1994 CB500 with that many issues makes the video even more fun. Good job! A group of us set out from the UK to ride to Austria in a few weeks and guess what one of the roads we will be riding is.....

That place looks amazing, excellent spirited casual through some tight twisties. I am also not one to slow for scenery unless I'm absolutely stuck behind slower people, I will just stop at a vista point and absorb it then or take some mushrooms during a hike.

It looks very civilised now. When my husband drove us down there in an Austin Maxi, in 1978, there was a noticeable absence of crash barrier, lane markings, and even asphalt.
@Schaaf7 жыл бұрын
scary!!!
@fundiver1989 жыл бұрын
"Try not to crash". Ha ha. Thats a very good advice. Because as the video show, in some places its a pretty steep drop, if you drive off.Its not all theory either. The tunnel near the top of the pass was only build in 1982. And in 1955 a military truck slipped of the cliff road, which the tunnel replaced. More than 20 young soldiers lost their lives, and there is a memorial for them near the place, where it happened.

+ninjanelly350 this one is open from June - October. But I'm not affected by that since I never can go riding in the mountains for more than one week per year anyway :) Thanks to my slow uploading schedule I have quite a few uploads left :) ANd yes, the brakes suffer from fading a lot.
+Dracati Ducati I dont think it is that country specific. The Gavia is not a major road. In fact the last section was not paved until the late 1990´s. And that was only for the sake of the Giro d´Italia and the Tour de France. If it wasn´t for the sake of bicycle races and tourism, I wonder if it would even be a public access road. Just look at how narrow it is in sections. If you look at the Stelvio, which is a somewhat more important road, then it has guardrails, everywhere they make sence. Many alpine roads in France on the other hand dont.

Nice ride Schaaf, but one question...why that annoying pendulum movement you make right before entering a hairpin turn, I see you doing it more often than not in many of your videos...I believe is totally unnecessary if you attack the curve already closer to the edge right before entering it your line would be much cleaner, smoother and faster, otherwise, I enjoy your riding adventures quiet a lot.

@Schaaf7 жыл бұрын
@619bamberg7 жыл бұрын
@Schaaf7 жыл бұрын
Danke dir!
