Did this pass last week, South to North, fully loaded at the end of a 300 mile ride from Croatia. It was scary. The southern forest section was particularly tight with absolutely no room for error. Would I do it again.... Maybe.

BEaRider it’s so your mirror doesn’t hit the mirror of the cars going uphill. That road is barely wide enough for a car and motorcycle to pass by each other. Rode it about ten years ago.

Yesterday I was on this pass (from Ponte Di Legno to Santa Caterina) in a car. The funniest thing is I hadn’t known that Google Maps would direct me through this road. It was FUCKING scary but yet very very exciting! One bad manouver and you’re gone! This morning I went through famous Stelvio Pass - views and corners are better on Stelvio but the wilderness, narrower roads and absolutely no safety precautions (bariers etc.) of Gavia made me much more excited! Breathtaking experience!

Nicely said, but I think bakerXderek is someone who inspire alot of motovloggers and he earned his stripes just for doing that. We all are special and great in our own way but I think bakerXderek is awesome. :)

I'll probably try and tackle this one in my MX5 either this year or next year. Will definately be going slower because there is no way my little car can do these speeds, and I can imagine oncoming traffic will be quite a pain in a car on this narrow road. Have you ever been to Hahntennjoch or Timmelsjoch? If you haven't I highly recommend them. I drove some passes last year and those two were absolute gems. Nice driving roads with beautifull scenery. Timmelsjoch is quite busy though, which is a bit of a downside.

My absolute favorite road, anywhere. I ride Harley's so my riding style, speed and handling are completely different than yours on Gavia Pass! Having ridden this road a lot, I watched the video with fond memories and a smile on my face, and then read your notes - a 1994 CB500 with that many issues makes the video even more fun. Good job! A group of us set out from the UK to ride to Austria in a few weeks and guess what one of the roads we will be riding is.....

That place looks amazing, excellent spirited casual through some tight twisties. I am also not one to slow for scenery unless I'm absolutely stuck behind slower people, I will just stop at a vista point and absorb it then or take some mushrooms during a hike.

It looks very civilised now. When my husband drove us down there in an Austin Maxi, in 1978, there was a noticeable absence of crash barrier, lane markings, and even asphalt.

@fundiver198
@fundiver198 9 жыл бұрын
"Try not to crash". Ha ha. Thats a very good advice. Because as the video show, in some places its a pretty steep drop, if you drive off.Its not all theory either. The tunnel near the top of the pass was only build in 1982. And in 1955 a military truck slipped of the cliff road, which the tunnel replaced. More than 20 young soldiers lost their lives, and there is a memorial for them near the place, where it happened.

Yup. Scary side indeed! I'm always impressed by the speed and confidence you're able to enter corners with considering it being a First Timer run. I'm also convinced there are no police in Europe now; that road would be crawling with police here in Australia
@Schaaf
@Schaaf 9 жыл бұрын
+Carmo Motovlog thanks Carmo!! You'll find police here as well. But they don't get up that far into the mountains very often indeed. But if I could ride there more often than once a year sooner or later they'd get me.

+Carmo Motovlog Not really, long time ago (more or less 10 years) you can ride fast here (Italy). But now, new limits, laws..control by Police etc Sure, if you are lucky (one day.. few ride) you can't find anyone (Police) but if you do it often, earlier or later you're in trouble (motorbikes confiscated, license suspended or revoked etc). Sry, I don't speak Eng, I hope you understand in anycase.

Hahaha, many years ago I rode my bike every week about 260km back and forth. At that time I didn't think using any public transportation at all. Riding is very good for my mental health, great escape after weekdays 😂 And I agree, there is no luck involved, we just need to be aware of our surroundings. I wonder what is the paper you put in tank bag. Is it an old school map direction?

Bit bumpy at the top and very narrow.Do you ever suffer from brake fade coming downhill Schaaf? How many months are the passes open? November to April? You must be running out of footage soon!.....😎
@Schaaf
@Schaaf 9 жыл бұрын
+ninjanelly350 this one is open from June - October. But I'm not affected by that since I never can go riding in the mountains for more than one week per year anyway :) Thanks to my slow uploading schedule I have quite a few uploads left :) ANd yes, the brakes suffer from fading a lot. They are usually gone after 10 minutes of hard braking max. But this time the front brake didn't work properly from the beginning so I couldn't brake hard at any point anyway xD

+Dracati Ducati I dont think it is that country specific. The Gavia is not a major road. In fact the last section was not paved until the late 1990´s. And that was only for the sake of the Giro d´Italia and the Tour de France. If it wasn´t for the sake of bicycle races and tourism, I wonder if it would even be a public access road. Just look at how narrow it is in sections. If you look at the Stelvio, which is a somewhat more important road, then it has guardrails, everywhere they make sence. Many alpine roads in France on the other hand dont.

+Graeme Murray it doesn't really feel fast to me. But usually I'll do at least two runs on a road like this to have one run without stops for the RAW video and another one to enjoy the scenery and stop from time to time to take pictures. This time I couldn't do it like that though since a minor breakdown f*cked up my day's schedule :D

Love that road and your riding of it. You say how easy the little Honda is to ride and sods law you hit that right hand bend all "Tit's Up" and wrong.You had a "Brain Fart".In cases of "Brain Fart" don't think, just do it!!! Ride Safe and keep it shiny side up.

Nice ride Schaaf, but one question...why that annoying pendulum movement you make right before entering a hairpin turn, I see you doing it more often than not in many of your videos...I believe is totally unnecessary if you attack the curve already closer to the edge right before entering it your line would be much cleaner, smoother and faster, otherwise, I enjoy your riding adventures quiet a lot.
@Schaaf
@Schaaf 8 жыл бұрын
edit: sorry, now I realized you probably talk about my swerving before hairpins. It might be unnecessary for a good rider like you but I need this in order to stay relaxed. I do it to lose all my tension.

@619bamberg
@619bamberg 7 жыл бұрын

Danke dir!
