If you wanna know how powerful the line "I miss you like the deserts miss the rain" is, the video clip for this song is titled something like "Missing by Everything but the Girl" and it has 6 million views. Meanwhile a video of only a desert with this song playing in the background titled "I miss you like the deserts miss the rain" has 22 million views.

Agreed, it was the song that got me to get the album though. Best album of theirs, I reckon. Consistently good. Favourite song off it's probably Group Four, it's just got this filthy sound to it that I love as the pretty vocals weave in and out, although the title track grew on me a lot too. Actually going off the beaten path a bit, my favourite's probably one of the b-sides off it, Euro Zero Zero. Has such a flow to it, and that bassline. Just, such a track.

Remixes that become bigger hits than the original song always fascinate me. It shows that a producer/dj that actually puts thought into flipping a song can do good things with it.

Todd used “Show Me Love” as one of his examples for uninteresting 90s dance music in the “What Is Love” video, but I’d still love for him to do an episode on it so he can see what a miracle Stonebridge worked on the original Robin S. song.
@xerxsesbreak84556 жыл бұрын
Sometimes it confuses me, though. For example, the original version of the sound of silence is a much more evocative piece than the version that actually became a hit. The other version of the song certainly isn't bad -- it has a nice driving feel to it --, but it just doesn't feel quite as reflective of the song's intent to me.

There was one other big trip-hop crossover in the United States that actually reminds me a lot of Tracey Thorne. That being Dido. You all remember Dido, right? Most people probably only know her for singing the song that Eminem sampled for "Stan", recontextualizing what was originally a mellow, tribal, folk-y love song into... well, "Stan". But she actually had a couple of hits in the early 2000s after that. While she's not a trip-hop artist, she was heavily involved in that scene, doing vocals for the act Faithless (a group her brother is part of), and her own music is heavily influenced by trip-hop and electronica. She's a great artist if you're into more mellow, female singer-songwriter-y music with a more electronic flare to it. Even though she's not a one-hit wonder (she had two charting hits, "Thank You" and "White Flag"), I would love for Todd to cover Dido on this show at some point. I brought her up simply because Tracey Thorne's voice and overall vibe reminds me so much of Dido.

I love Dido. It kinda makes me sad that she's an artist deserving of the question, "You all remember Dido, right?" because guaranteed there's a bunch of folks who read that and thought, "Nope."

Jennifer Nichole - She's one of my favorites. Sadly, she doesn't put out music nearly enough. Her last release was in 2013, which was her first album since 2008, which came right after another five-year hiatus. I think we're due for another Dido album pretty soon. At least I hope so. It's strange that no one remembers her, because her first two albums were hugely successful and she's highly respected in the U.K.

>if they were known to be an item, indie scene would have eaten that up because it's so starved for gossip. I think that right there is the reason. Any other scene, they may have been comfortable being forthcoming about it because by the sounds of it, their relationship is exceedingly stable and that wouldn't get much hype in a scene where there's plenty of juicy gossip. But a scene that's full of people just ITCHING to have SOMETHING to gossip about? That would have been awful for them.
@troodon10966 жыл бұрын

I think Todd has missed an example of trip-hop in the US charts, ironically involving an artist he references in the video. That's the 1990 DNA remix of Suzanne Vega's Tom's Diner. It was an unauthorised re-mix, but Suzanne being the lovely person she is, agreed to it being released and it turned out to be a hugely successful one too and got, I believe, to #5 in the US charts and hit the top of a number of national charts. So taken was Suzanne with it, that when I saw her performing at the Cornbury Festival in Oxfordshire about 15 years ago, she made a particular point of playing that version. By a complete coincidence, I retired to the area and now live only about a mile from where that festival was held. DNA (not to be confused with the US band) were from Bath, just down the road from Bristol from whence Massive Attack originates. Nb. On the subject of Massive Attack, the music video clip of Tracey walking down the street can't help but remind me of the epic 5 minute 21 second single take tracking shot video of vocalist Shara Nelson in the music video for the song.

In 2015, my girlfriend was telling a story about buying a CD as a teenager, and discovering the single she wanted on that album sounded nothing like it sounded on the radio. She hadn't said what song or what band. I just said, "Missing". She was surprised that I nailed it. I worked for a radio station that played the album version for no apparent reason. I think the program director didn't know the difference.

I just found this one hit wonderland, which genuinely surprised me. They are my dad's favourite band and I grew up listening to Tracy Thorn's singing. For some reason I always assumed they were a really big band of the 80's and 90's, not just a "one hit wonder".Thanks for covering this one, I can't wait to show my dad. I know he'll love this.

Like Metal. Techno subgenres are just points to bicker over for those who are in one group that care way too much about whether their subgenre is or isn't another variation of subgenre. Techno, house, trance, euro dance, trip-hop, electronica, sophisti-pop. Just arguments in minutiae. Designed for Internet music nerds to argue over.

"Missing" was massive all over Europe. And quite interesting recording. Unlike "the biggest billboard hit" or whatever, which had one purpose in combining sellouts and that was Money. I had forgotten all about it until just now, man. You reminded me it exists. On the other hand I still enjoy listening "Missing" from time to time.

Come on now Todd, if they are happily married with two kids, they're still living well on their music careers, and they still enjoy making music, I'd say they succeeded very well. Becoming more famous would have started interfering with their family life, and if that's more important to them, I'd say that's a great decision.
@troodon10966 жыл бұрын
This is a pop music review channel and thus asks about the question about success in that venue. Though I'm kind of reminded of the OHW on Butthole Surfers in that, they didn't get more because they didn't want more. They did what they wanted to do and presumably are still doing it, and that's a good measure of success beyond how their songs chart.
@willritter40764 жыл бұрын
there are 2 kinds of one-hit wonders, those who disappear from music altogether and those who use their success to continue making music indefinitely... EBTG is one of the best examples of the latter. Their material is consistently brilliant, even if it lacks a wide audience.
@storageheater4 жыл бұрын
There's two autobiographies from Tracy Thorn now, one focusing on singing and one on her whole life, and she writes regular columns for newspapers, and the way she tells it is a beautiful story of someone who's done music on her own terms for her whole life. Having read them (and I really recommend them), there's a really fun extra thing I can add: before Everything But The Girl, while still at school, she and another schoolgirl formed The Marine Girls and recorded in their shed. Their album Beach Party "was named as one of Kurt Cobain's 50 favourite albums in his diaries." When she met Ben Watt and started Everything But The Girl, they had their first success while she was still at university. I do love the dark joke of "could you be dead? you always were two steps ahead" but I never liked EBTG as much as Tracey Thorn's solo stuff (or even the Marine Girls, now I've actually heard them, they really were pretty great.)
@dvt13934 жыл бұрын
@@storageheater Wow, that's so interesting! It seems like she's lived an incredibly fascinating life, and had done everything that's she's wanted in her career on her own terms. I'll need to check out her autobiography books. I'm a sucker for a good rock bio/doc. 🙂

@SavageGreywolf6 жыл бұрын
There were a dozen trip-hop one-hit wonders in the mid 90s, I'm not sure what Todd is smoking. just off the top of my head, "Your Woman" by White Town, "Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand" by Primitive Radio Gods, "Tom's Diner" by Suzanne Vega, and of course "Six Underground" by Sneaker Pimps.... The Chemical Brothers also did a couple of trip-hop styled songs that remained in the low undercurrent of their popularity in the 90s. They weren't big hits though like their more in-your-face house stuff.

Walking wounded was a great album, I remember buying it in Melbourne, remember in the early '90's when local independent record shops were being bought up by Blockbuster et al... Well I got this at a trendy little record shop in Fitzroy who had made a niche for themselves specialising in hiphoo and alternative rock, they had vinyl at a time when no-one was stocking vinyl. I have fond memories of the early '90's, Portishead, Massive Attack, seeing Kylie Minogue at Mardi Gras, Seeing Bjork on the same stage but not at Mardi Gras. My boyfriend (who I called my husband) and I broke up and this was long before we thought we would ever have any hope of having a 100% legal and state recognised marriage. The glamourised drug use, heroin in particular and dubbed it "Heroin Chic"and we believed it, I'm from Queensland largely considered one of Australia's "backward" states and in an effort to be hip, relevant, up with the times, people my age not only started taking heroin, we started dying from it. My schools graduating year in 1992 had, maybe 120 kids (at a stretch) and about 15 of my school mates died, it was a crazy time, my state had never had a problem like heroin before, vogue was calling in "Chic", Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love we on it.... I'm not condoning it, it was just a crazy time to be a young person.

I'd never heard of this song, all I knew EBTG from was that electrically charged scene from the finale of How I Met Your Mother where Ted meets the Mother, their haunting cover of Downtown Train was playing in the background and that scene was just perfect.
