People ask whether I use Windex or WD-40 when hand sanding a blade. Neither.
This is one hour of unnarrated hand sanding. There is no payoff. Unless you like boredom. You have been warned.
OK, I use Windex

I was a little thrown off by the crying. Without that I might have watched the video whole. Could you make a tutorial version of the video to show the process and explain the steps and tools? What type of abrasion media do you use? Linen or Paper? Do you use oil or soapy water? What grit steps are you using? etc.
@DatBoiOrly
@DatBoiOrly 3 жыл бұрын
@@sainteins rather simple tbh you basically use a flat bar you then work your way from 40 grit to 1500 grit in sandpaper, then you want to take it a step further you can then use a buffing compound depending on your hardness of your steel and if your etching it you wipe it down with the degreaser of your choice the only thing that matters about the cloth is that it's clean same goes for your flat bar and your sandpaper also any crap on them can ruin your work.
@fxnepilogue
@fxnepilogue 3 жыл бұрын
DatBoiOrly I would certainly be crying if I started at 40 grit.. I use some 3M trizact belts up to A16 (1200 grit I think) and when I start hand sanding I go to 320 grit most of the time... rarely I’ll go back down to 220 for problem areas.

There are two types of hand sanders. Those that dread it and loath every second, and those who have split personalities and can have glorious conversations with themselves. I am certainly in the second group and I thought you would be to. Keep up the great work!!! Loved the intro as always!

I don’t dread hand sanding but it’s not my favorite part of making a knife. I can’t tell you how many times I decide that I’m NOT sanding but end up do it because it feels like I’m skipping a step. It kills my hands and my wife gets a little irritated that I’m always buying sand paper

For real authenticity he should be using the tears of innocent children, preferably the really cute ones with dirt on their faces that you always see in popular media depictions of Old London Town. Bonus points if the other children spontaneously break out into song in the background.

Like everyone else, I’m not a fan of hand sanding. I’ll be doing it myself tomorrow night after work, but I’d rather drive to the coast and drag the blade behind me in the dunes all day. I wonder if that would work for a nice satin finish. I’ll contemplate that while hand sanding tomorrow.

I so feel your pain. I started pushing customers towards etched blades (hamon, san mai, or damascus) just to avoid doing less of this lol. If you get it up a 220 or a finishing belt on the grinder, then go 220 to 400 by hand and etch, it's much more forgiving on the finishing stages in my opinion haha.
