CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sy (Robin Williams) fantasizes that he is a trusted friend of the Yorkins.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Funnyman Robin Williams steps out of character in this tense, low-key thriller that marked the feature-film directorial debut of music video veteran Mark Romanek. Semour "Sy" Parrish (Williams) runs the photo processing department at a large discount store; Sy is dedicated to his job, and takes great pride in his work. Sy's favorite customers are Nina and Will Yorkin (Connie Nielsen and Michael Vartan), an attractive and cheerful young couple with a nine-year-old boy, Jake (Dylan Smith). Sy dotes on the Yorkins and their son whenever they drop off film to be processed -- something they've been doing quite often ever since Jake was born -- and Nina and Will are indulgent of Sy's attentions, regarding his as a harmless eccentric. What the Yorkins don't know is Sy is a desperately lonely man with no real life of his own, and he's been obsessively making copies of their photos, for years, imagining himself to be "Uncle Sy," a member of the family. Sy's tenuous hold on reality begins to collapse when he develops a roll of film brought in by a new customer that suggests Will has been unfaithful to Nina; the notion that his ideal family may be falling apart is troubling enough for Sy, and when he loses his job, Sy reaches the breaking point. One Hour Photo was screened in competition at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival.

Its funny you say that (Not really funny mind you), I am a single dad and while I love my daughter, she is like my best buddy, the fact that I am a single parent usually drives women away from wanting to be in a real relationship with me and drives some people away from wanting to even be friends. So I get the loneliness, even though I do have somebody to carry on my genes, somebody who loves me with all her heart.

Wish Robin was given more intense dramatic roles like this. He really did an amazing job in this. I remember it being a surprise when he had been the "funny guy everyone loved" to playing a villain in One Hour Photo and Insomnia. Although, I consider his role as Sy in this film to be more sympathetic, then his role in Insomnia. It was pretty cool and it proved that Robin had more range as an actor other than just playing the comedic role. Wish he had given more opportunities like this before he passed away.

Sly was a tragic figure because he wasn't anything to anyone and he wanted some kind of connection with people and he thought he found it with this family and really he was just there but he didn't really exist! I noticed he wore white which means death and he was dying inside, his father abused him and took pictures of him and degraded him! All he had in his apartment was pictures of this family that he needed because they seemed so perfect when in fact they weren't! I look at Alex Forrest in Fatal Attraction she wore white and she had an apartment which was white and it meant death, Basic instinct Catherine Trumell had a white dress and that means death! These characters Sly, Catherine Trumell, Alex Forrrest all tragic and haunting figures who were damaged and had nothing to gain! They basically were all dead! This basically showed Robin's Williams true soul! Sad that Robin Williams was depressed and he died! Sad!

It definitely doesn't portray it as a horror. Because he never sets out to murder anyone. He just start having episodes that aren't right, but not devoid of empathy. Like, it's understandable he gets set off by a father being unfaithful, as he has heavy trauma of dealing with something similar. He's never portrayed ad the bad guy, or a horrible person. Just a strange man who people would rather shutter than actually deal with him.

Williams is so good in this film probably his best performance. You actually relate to the character and feel his loneliness. I love how his fantasy is not sexual driven. It’s just wanting to belong and feel love and wanted. He doesn’t mean harm (which invading peoples privacy is of cause extremely harmful) he just wants to belong. I have been single nearly 5 years. My Kids stay 2 nights a week and see the kid through the week through sports clubs, cinema etc etc. But when home alone it can be horribly lonely.

It's weird, but I always thought the shot of Sy on the toilet was brilliant. What better way to show him marking his desired territory.

That's an interesting way to look at it, but it wasn't meant to be quite like that. That shot was intended to convey Sy's comfortableness and contentment inside the family home.

Yeah, I think that was intentional. It's one of the few thrillers in which the bad guy is sympathetic and isn't actually dangerous until the climax.

As much as I'd love giving psychoanalysis in comment sections but... an MG Char Zaku? Good choice kid. But also that poor child. He apparently only likes "bad guys".

I remember watching this when it first came out. The thing that bothered me most from this scene was him using the toilet. That felt like the biggest violation of privacy.

The one thing i gathered from this movie when i first saw it: get married and have a family so you wont be alone. Being married and being a dad is enough to ensure you wont ever be alone...throw some dogs in the mix and you have it all.
