I was a child extra in this movie. There's a scene where he goes to the kid's soccer game, and my brother and I are a few of the extras on the team. I was too young to comprehend how big it was, but the scenes included Robin Williams. I didn't bother him, being 6 or 7 at the time just the guy being the voice of the Genie wasn't like monumental to me, but he was super gracious to the kids and their families wanting to speak with him before we started. Once we started, being in an outside soccer field, many times we would have to stop a take because of a loud truck or a plane overhead. Movie sets are a lot of stopping and starting, and this fucking guy... In perhaps his most fucked up role he ever did... Would go out of character and keep us dumb ass child extras happy and not bored by animatedly yelling at the planes to go away or telling silly jokes to all of us. The experience never really hit me until much later when I was like, wait I was an extra in a movie in a scene with Robin Williams, and he, being the star, took the time between takes to make sure I and the other handful of children around him, didn't get too bored making the movie he was just the star of. What a fucking guy.

Want another perfect example of such an act? Tim Curry in Beauty and the Beast: The Tale of the Crimson Flower, from 1998. I really appreciate how this movie didn't make Sy into some sort of deranged serial killer for cheap thrills. I loved Williams' humane portrayal of this tragic man. Throughout the movie, I was constantly unnerved by him because he is very creepy and I didn't know what he would be capable of but I also felt a lot of empathy for him because he clearly just wants to have a normal, loving family. It's very interesting that Sy didn't want to replace the husband/father (which is what a lesser film would've done) but simply wanted to be a part of a good family.

The comment “no one takes photos of things we want to forget” that really hit me. It really made me realize why I didn’t want to take photos of myself at my lowest during high school. I was miserable and numb to so much during that time. It warped how I viewed myself that even now seeing pictures of me during those days makes me uneasy. Photos can be haunting even if they look innocent and unremarkable.

I feel you in this - Personal experience as well, but ... I want to include movies and videos in this. Not a personal experience, but I remember Daniel Radcliffe in an interview explaining that he was hung-over or drunk for most of the final movies of Harry Potter. He never drunk on-set but always the night before, and woke up still pissed. He even said he could tell by watching the movies which scenes he was drunk in, and that he hated those scenes and never watched it again. He since got help for it and has of course started to branch out more and find new paths in his career, but hearing that from him .. I felt so bad.

I went thru this during my teenage years as well. I had dropped out of school for 3 years and i was so down on myself that i barely left my house. I can honestly say that was the lowest point in my life and i still dread finding photos of myself from that time.

Yeah, Jake was great. I worked with middle schoolers for a few years (I know he's younger) but you'd be surprised by the depth of emotions and empathy they feel at times. If you can get them to trust you, they'll tell you people that they're worried about. The next step is actually following through in a compassionate way. Not victim blaming anyone, but this kind of thing doesn't have to happen in real life if we decide to give a shit and it could have been much worse

My interpretation of the ending was Sy was trying to humiliate the father the way his own father humiliated him, by having the father and his mistress pose in ways that are indicative of **ahem** that kind of pornography. And Sy's photos of random objects at the end mirror the amaturish photos taken by the son Jake. I took this to indicate Sy is trying to mimic that childlike innocence in order to recapture part of what was stolen from him.

I’ve seen this a few times, the bloodshot eyes and when he screams never fails to scare the living hell out of me. What I’ve learned over the years as I’m now older is the sheer crippling loneliness a lot of people feel, the yearning to want to belong or have someone to love and be loved becomes so unbearable sometimes that it’s easy to see why that can have disastrous consequences for some people like Sy the photo guy

I had the interpretation that it wasn't blood coming out of his eyes but was the chemicals used to process film. I don't think the liquid is actually red but it appears that way when processed in a dark room, not sure if anyone else had this interpretation? His passing has hit me harder then any other celebrity death. I never expected it and that made it ever more difficult to come to terms with. Being a older teenager when he passed and I was going through the passing of my granddad the year before...I had to grieve for both. I feel weird for saying that because I never met the man but he was such a staple of my childhood and I suppose having my granddad pass suddenly then him. Both being the first times I’ve had to deal with death being in my personal life and having to come to the terms that they/he won’t be coming back. Making every rewatch of my childhood movies/films even more melancholy for me. Knowing the amazing man who caused so many to smile couldn’t make himself smile. And I feel like that why it hit me so hard. No one knew just how unwell he was. It taught me that you truly never know the battles that people are going through in private. And you never know when the people you love the most can leave. Unfortunately I now associate the both of them together. So when I watch things to do with Robin Williams I think of my granddad. Both whom I miss so dearly and wish I would’ve gotten more time with.

@@SeppukuAddict Just because he didn't take photos of the acts doesn't absolve him. He still held two relative strangers hostage, made them fear for their lives, forced them to perform acts that would incriminate them (sure, they were acts they were going to do anyway, but that doesn't make it alright for Sy to act as he did), and they still believed he took the photos at the time. It would be highly atypical to end up saying "Phew, no photos? All is forgiven! Sick prank!" over trauma like that. Sure, it's Romanek's story and all, so if it he says that he imagines that the family forgave him, then that's how the story goes. Still doesn't make it believable.

Glad to see you cover this one. To me, One Hour Photo is one of the great cinematic portrayals of loneliness, and how that feeling (and the circumstances that cause it) can drive people to extremes. The desire to belong to a family/group/unit can drive you to a point where you try to change yourself or the group in ways that go beyond logic or taste. Williams' casting is genius, as it uses audience knowledge of him as the hilarious crowdpleaser to undermine expectations. (Also, there is something deeply sad in the fact that Sy's line of work is now largely obsolete. Even if he could have extricated himself from the misery piling up around him, he would have soon found himself defined as a relic ousted by the prevalence of new technology.)

Ah, the film where Robin Williams says Neon Genesis Evangelion. Apparently the director had no clue about Evangelion and just picked the Mass Production Eva toy cuz he wanted an action figure with angel wings and a sword. Ironically its a good pick for the film since End of Evangelion and One Hour Photo seem to have a few things in common. Both being films with anti escapism themes and elements of psychological horror.
@ToTheDisco24

I love how this movie kinda plays into how Robin was typecast in his time, a wistful man who daydreams of better things and goes put of his way to try to achieve those things, the difference being that his behavior escalates in a way that is harmful and dangerous rather than innocent but no one else understands. I also love how Sy's world is characterized by plain white, his clothes, his car, his house (save for the wall of family pictures), even the blue he wears at work looks faded and washed out. Meanwhile the family is full of colour, just like the photos, they're warm and bright and feel inviting. It really shows how Sy sees this family as something picture perfect and inviting while his own world is cold and isolated. Finally, Sy's pictures he took remind me a lot of Jake's, experimental pictures taken in a childlike way of 'I think this would look cool or interesting in a photo'. I kinda think by doing that the director was subtly hinting that not only is Sy delusional and an untrustworthy narrator, but also that he hasnt fully progressed past childhood due to his fathers abuse.

fun fact, one of the mainr easons we strive to record the good in our lives is because our brains are hard wired to remember all the bad things in our life, because survival instincts used to use that as a way to make better, more succesful choices later, like that time you did the thing, but you forgot to turn this way so the bad happened, you remember that because when you do the thing again you'll remember to turn this way and then the bad won't happen, so we photograph and record good things cuz their harder to remember in mass
