Went fishing with my dad earlier this year we had a similar thing happen. He put the rod down for a second, next thing you know the whole 700 dollar Penn rod and reel setup fell into the water. A couple of minutes later I hooked onto ARS, thought it was big, turned out it was his rod and reel and it also had a nice red fish on the end of it too. lol

Similar story. Took a friend from work night fishing off a seawall. He brought his dads brand new heavy duty expensive penn out with this nice bright yellow mono on it. We were catching decent mangrove snappers on light action Shakespeare's, yet he declined borrowing my spares. He was very focused on that rod. At the time he was only 16, I was just 2 years older. He did ask if I could lend him a shark rig eventually so I set it up for him on a live pinfish gave him a rundown of what to expect about the power they have and how aggressive the strike can be. I went to start de-scaling and degutting the catch at a cleaning station when I noticed he had the rod leaning against a metal sign. I came over and warned him it needed to be in his hands or a makeshift rod holder we made using 12" pbc with zip ties. He ignored me so I went back to cleaning, and 15min later I heard a splash. He told me it slammed onto the floor and shot into the water like a torpedo! Lol. I started fishing his area after I was done, thought I had a snapper stuck in a large patch of seaweed felt weird but it was that bright yellow line barley dangling off my hook. His rod had a small 3ft nurse shark on it. I told him he needed to take all the line off and throw the entire reel in a bucket of soapy water, open up everything dry it down or else it would oxidate. He ignored that too and the next day it was completely rusted over.

People just don’t know the difference between porpoise and dolphins. When u see dolphins try fishing when u see porpoises either swim with them or leave lol. Great video, hope your brother Robert is doing better, prayers!

Dolphins aren’t just the name of the blue and green fish. Flipper was a bottle nosed dolphins. Dolphins and porpoises are different, like you said, but dolphins (with the exception of the fish) look very similar and it’s hard to tell the difference if you don’t know.

Porpoise will dive DEEP! We had one grab a halibut we were reeling in. The halibut was still in 200 feet of water and when it grabbed it, it started stripping line so fast you could smell the reel getting hot. Had to cut the line and move on haha

I used to do that technique for a solo launch. Looks pretty cool until you don't quite catch the boat and you need to go for a swim. The easy solution is to throw a line over the winch post that is long enough to allow the boat to clear the trailer but prevents the embarrassing swim of shame.
