This is the single most dramatic implosion video I've ever seen... The beginning almost felt like a movie trailer... Like, for real... After the prayer, I was half expecting the deep-voice guy who is on literally every trailer ever to say "Coming to a Cinima near you this Fall, an epic tale of a building... reaching the end of it's life."

My dad was an initial auditor on this building when it was first built for VA Power and retired with the company in the mid 2000s after 33 years with VA Power/Dominion. Very bittersweet. Lots of memories here as a kid! Excellent video, though! Great job, demo crews!

Royall Clark They spent a couple of months gutting and weakening the structure. By the time of the implosion, it was nothing but a shell. I used to work across the street from the building.

Tough "shot" with all the other structures so close. Dyson is out of Tulsa, OK and they've taken out some "hard shots" before. It's all about timing the explosive charges so it falls in on itself. As much art as it is science. Top-notch video too. Nice and "tight" without filler.

Ricky Earp At 2:40 you can see the brand new Dominion Power building to the left. It is literally across the street from the old Dominion Power building being imploded. I used to work about a block away from the implosion site.

Of the three major explosive demolition contractors, Griffith has the best videos. If the videographer is a private contractor Griffith, keep using him/her. Superior and imaginative product!

I live about 15 minutes from downtown Richmond,VA. Been in this building a few times. Crazy to see it go down like that! The big glass building you see next to the one coming down. There was a building just like the other one that came down. They are going to build another glass building just like that one right next to it. It's going to be the dominion power buildings.

Not really. They worked at gutting and weakening the Dominion building for months before the implosion. It had been pretty much reduced to a hollow shell before they blew it up. I used to work about a block away and watched the entire demolition process every day.

In one of the shots, there is an exterior view of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond. This momentarily startled me, inasmuch as I am now working my way through Shelby Foote's monumental Civil War trilogy. Having been conditioned to think of Richmond in a Civil War context, the idea of a Federal Reserve Bank there is attention-grabbing.

you think that by now, these demolition companies would control their dust storm at implosion, by spraying water on the site at the time of detonation... Kind of like when they launch a rocket, and they turn on water jets to control heat, just before ignition of rockets...

The water is not used to control heat, it’s used to control noise. The acoustics from a large launch vehicle could rip the vehicle apart on the ground without the water sound suppression.

Brian Landers they’ve tried something like that, Boeing Sea Launch. It was a failure. The water has to be sprayed in droplet form to absorb the acoustics.

DH GRIFFIN is a local company downtown. Their Richmond location is called DARI. However they brought in the explosive expert and engineer from their North Carolina branch. SB COX only does heavy equipment and hand labor demo. They dont have a building Implosion team.

I believe I read that there are bodies higher up in the building that are difficult to safely retrieve due to overall instability and imploding the building with them there would be not cool. Plus there are court fights over who is going to pay for it all.
