Hamilton was speaking the words as Washington sang them as a hint to the fact that Hamilton wrote Washington's resignation speech.

The "sir" thing was addressed by Lin. If I remember correctly he said it was a way to show that Alexander was still socially and financially not in the same places as either Burr nor Washington. He said that you can see as the play goes further in some songs you'll hear Burr call him Sir, the first time being in 10 duel commandments, and it shows that Hamilton is slowly progressing status wise both socially and financially

I think the layers on how Washington and Alexander weren’t in-sync but they were still kinda clear was a way to show musically how Alex was writing out the words that Washington spoke. It was like those movie scenes where you visually see the person writing or reading and then hear the person who wrote the letter overlap. I hope that makes sense

Lin wrote this song's melody and notes specifically for Chris Jackson, because, as he puts it, when you have a friend who sings like Chris Jackson, you write him a song (Chris also starred in two other productions of Lin's writing: Benny in In the Heights, and the singing voice of Chief Tui in the Disney film Moana).

Talk about insightful leadership. Washington knew he was setting a precedent and he himself deemed 2 terms was long enough! Sadly, he only got to enjoy life “at home in this nation we made” for two years.

The song contains a verse from the bible, that Washington apparently liked to use: "Everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid". When Lin was writing the song, he got stuck at one point, and I think it was one of his collaborators who suggested he use the bible quote and it worked perfectly. 📖
@JacobRestituto4 жыл бұрын
Oh wow!
@lindseysquire84173 жыл бұрын
Yep. He kept feeling like the whole vibe of the song (One Last Ride, at that time) just wasn't right, and then one of his collaborators was like "What about the vine and fig tree thing?" and Lin said, "What vine and fig tree thing?" and when the collaborator explained, Lin went into the other room and when he came out, he had the song.

That "Why do you have to say goodbye" line is a direct quote (musically) from one of the songs from Newsies. They performed this at the White House just before Obama stepped down. There were a lot of moist eyes in the audience.

This song ranks towards the top for me due to the way Lin as able to incorporate Washington's actual Presidential Farewell Address into the song. I love the way Lin had Hamilton start the speech to represent his contributions in writing it, and then have it transition into Washington singing it to represent GW actually delivering his Farewell Address. It was also super fun that they were able to get President Obama to read the speech for the Hamildrop.

I love this one because it’s not JUST about Washington teaching the “people” how to say goodbye to a leader-it’s about teaching his successors, future presidents and leaders, how to say goodbye to POWER, since at this point leaders usually held onto their power until they either died or were forced out of it.

The performance of one last time at the White House is so good and emotional, def should check that one out and also you can see the musicians switching instruments during the song and what they're using and such... plus is very emotional since that performance was a week or so before the tonys and before lin, leslie and phillipa ended their run of the original cast and also, this was the last event this type hosted by the Obamas and Chris Jackson was singing as Washington and behind him there's the portrait of Washington and with Obama there. It's pretty emotional, no dry eye in the house.

Lots of people have noted that the speech is Washington's real farewell address, but on top of that when he uses the Bible verse "everyone shall sit under they're own vine and fig tree" that is a verse Washington used in correspondence at least 50 times in real life.

Arguably one of the most important things that ever happened in American government, limiting power so that it’s not a country ruled by a ruler / king but a representative of the people who’s time in office is limited; something our current career politicians should reflect on.

Yeah, they directly took from the speech. Hamilton wrote the speech on Washington's request, because while Washington had good ideas and good wisdom to impart, he knew Hamilton was a far better wordsmith than he was, so had Hamilton take his ideas for what he wanted to say and put it in his eloquent writing.

The album was recorded in a studio and not live on stage like the movie on Disney+, so the different effects you're hearing on their voices were most likely added in the studio. When you compare the live movie performance to the album, the pacing is different and there's added interludes that aren't on the soundtrack. Just thought you should know.
