Leaves are how I started carving. I did Oak leaves. They are simple as they do not have a lot of tight points and inside 'corners' like maple leaves or grape leaves. Oak leaves have smooth outer lines and inward curves have a fairly large radius compared to other species of leaves. The Oak leaves allowed me to get used to the tool and to learn which bits I like the most. I could have done even simpler leave like those of a Gardenia bush or Camillia; but I wanted a little bit of a challenge so Oak it was. And know that this type of carving can become addictive for some people. I am learning how to chisel carve but that is a much slower process to learn. You can get a satisfying piece using the rotary tool if you want something quicker. And I use the diamond bits to finish the piece. I, personally, do not like cut lines showing, so the larger diamond bits allow me to get a really smooth finish, removing a lot of the cut lines the rotary bits leave. I hope people give the art a try. The gentleman in the video is correct, it is not as hard as you think. People who are nice enough to take the time to make these video's and put them on You Tube really helped me make the decision to have a try at it. Thanks to all of you who share your knowledge. Everyone, have a great day.

So glad I came across your video. I just got a rotary tool, and plan on carving names of soldiers from my Unit that died in Iraq that I deployed with, on an overly large (in diameter) Walking stick. I plan on then giving the stick to my Units Medical Platoon, of which I was a part. I know I couldn't do it with knives and gouges. However, I assist in Orthopedic surgeries and use rotary tools all the time in those surgeries. I'm starting with an inexpensive battery powered one first. Thanks for the video

One thing that i find handy is that I have several cheap rotary tools with a different bit in each one, that way I don't have to change bits, I just pick up another tool. I use the cheapo ones from harbor freight that are $7 on sale. Also another nice idea is a foot pedal switch so you can control the speed. I just plug the 4 rotary tools into a plug strip which I plug into the foot switch which controls whichever one I have switched on.

I have been power carving for many years, but have never had the burr bits like those. Looks like a real time saver. My favorite things to carve are dragons and barbarians fighting. The dragons are wood, but I carve bones to make the teeth and horns, as well as the swords, shields, and helmets for the little barbarians. Very time consuming, but great fun!

Oh! I have been thinking about carving for a year now! I used to work as a porcelain decorator, but now that my eyesight is getting worse and worse, I am thinking about power carving as an artistic part of my woodworking obsession. You made it look so easy! I agree with you - less is more in these type of projects, too much realism might make it look like plaster cast, lol. Thank you for this video!

Very nice. I did this a few years ago, carved individual leaves, cutting them out of 1/4" oak first on the scroll saw first. It gave me the opportunity to really get some big contours on each leaf. Plus if you screw one up, you've only screwed one up. I'm going to have to try carving a pile of leaves now. Very good and empowering video though. You broke the steps down well.

I wish this video came out two weeks ago when I was carving a clock face with layered sunflowers. Your directions were better that what I had. Rotary tools sometimes cause too much fuzziness in basswood so I also used a reciprocating flex handle that came with gouge and veining tips. This is available to fit Dremel tools from Amazon and others.
@StumpyNubs4 жыл бұрын
If I create fuzzies I sometimes go back over the whole thing with a fine grinding stone bit. It burnishes the surface and smooths it out without removing any wood and messing up your carving like sandpaper would. I sharpened dowel and some rubbing will do the same thing.

Great video. I forgot how much I'd enjoyed carving, It's Been some time. You inspired me to head to the shop and play with some wood. Recommendation from me for the GMC rotary tool. It's got variable speed via a wheel & comes with a long flex shaft. It also has a tendency to get a little hot if you bend it too far, but it's so much cheaper than the Dremel brand things that I think it's great for beginners. Can't confirm whether the keyless chuck will fit it though (haven't managed to get one for myself yet).
