My great aunt told me this story when I was very young. She had a lady friend who had two windows in a corner of her bedroom. The friend was sitting on the end of her bed during a thunderstorm. A ball of lightning came in one window and went out the other. There was another story not too long ago of three people waiting in a bus shelter in Madison, WI., during a storm. Lightning hit the shelter and I know two died for sure. One minute you are waiting and the next your life is over.

When that happens (a fireball coming in and going out through a place) it is called 'St. Elmos's fire'. At least that is what it is called when a fireball travels through an airplane (from nose to tail). When that happens apparently it does no harm, a very strange phenomenon indeed!

That’s the hard part about life why? RIP beautiful Jennie, your story touched me because you were so young , God bless her parents and siblings. One evening a storm was rolling in and lightning hit the pole right in front of our eyes. The loud crack when it hit was scary. After the storm ended, we went across the street to look at the damage. Truly a sad story. I hope she didn't have to suffer. But, there IS a "take away" in this for me. Once again, I am reminded that thunderstorms are CRAZY-DANGEROUS! Stay indoors and, if you can't do that, stay away from trees, telephone poles and open spaces! Find shelter and let it pass! Put a lightning rod on your house and any structures you may value. My mom, dad and grandparents on both sides were born and raised in the Midwest. And the stories they tell about the "electrical storms", as they used to be called, were NO JOKE!

In early 1993, as a policeman, I attended a job at Binna Burra in Queensland, Australia. Two young girls from Upper Mt.Gravatt State School were struck and killed by lightning during a school excursion. They were aged about 11 years. The teachers present carried out CPR on those girls for about 4 hours till a doctor was airlifted into the scene and declared them dead. They were dead before they hit the ground. So so sad. I had to walk in and retrieve their bodies. I can never forget those little girls. It was very quick for them. So sad for their families and all involved. Rest in peace kids.

I was born and raised in Naperville but moved south at age 21. Growing up we lived just one block from this cemetery. As kids can be curious, we rode our bikes to see the grotto often. Something about it fascinated us. Giving my age away that was in the 1950’s. So it’s been there a long time. Btw, my grandparents are both buried there. My grandma passed in 1964 and was a member of SS Peter & Paul Church. But when my grandpa died in the late 1970’s the church didn’t want to let him be buried next to her. Why? Because he was a Quaker. The family spoke up and the church relented. Grandpa is buried next to grandma. Thank the Lord!

The grotto is a replica of Lourdes, which was another Marian Apparition, where Mary appeared to St. Bernadette, a sickly young girl. Many healings happen there. Mary also visited Fatima (3 children), but in the last century there have been hundreds (including in Egypt, Japan with Our Lady of Akita, Africa, and more.) The messages have been consistent. The last Fatima Miracle, the miracle of the sun, was witnessed by hundreds of thousands of people. Medjugorje is still not an approved miracle, but the others mentioned have been vigorously tested.

How do I know of Downers Grove? Was it a town that was mentioned in Orson Welles "War of the Worlds"? I got zapped once. I was painting high tension towers over a summer and they were about 300 feet tall in Ohio. A storm just blew in out of nowhere and we were about halfway down when the lightning hit the tower. I got about 120,000 volts that day and luckily it just carried on down the pole into the ground. I hit the ground and lost my breath but I didn't have any lasting electrical burns.
