I'm no expert at lifting beams with a Homemade Gin Pole. I've done it a few times, but nothing like this. Needless to say, things get real sketchy, real quick. All in a day's work at the Off-Grid Cabin Build.

Knowing when to say 'I am done for the day' and not get hurt is bang on. I always find when I get to about 3pm things are getting sketchy and tidy up for the next day. Keep at it - great project.

I laughed so hard when the gin pole fell! twice! it lets me know that I'm not the only one who makes mistakes. it gives me encouragement that I can get my project done by myself as well. I'm putting up a Pole Building by myself and the ideas I got from you are priceless. Thanks for sharing!

A great vid, and I really appreciate you showing the failures. This is a perfect illustration of why everyone doing this type of work should own a copy of the Ashley Book of Knots and spend some time familiarizing themselves with ropes and pulleys. While the use of a mast isn't bad, the devil's in the details and making sure everything is secured and operating like you want... well, that saves a ton of problems. We've lost a lot of knowledge over the generations, but the use of ropes and pulleys is still common enough that we can watch videos from the tradesmen who still use the on a daily basis and apply their techniques to our circumstances.

Thank you very much for sharing all the info! The gin pole concept helped me solve the lifting the heavy beam problem while building a treehouse. I love how the old school traditional ways still hold true today! Thanks again for sharing this knowledge!!

@@OffGridFromTheGroundUp... The only problem that I can see is that the crank handle would get in the way of the mounting, which would need modifications to mounting to overcome in less than ideal situations.... Need to make a video on that. One guy used Welding to get a drill attachment. But most people don't weld.

@@dennisgarber you’re right. I took the crank handle off and used a 1/2” drill to crank it. I have a video on it!
