What is your favorite scene in the MCU? Who should we highlight next in the Marvel 101 series?

The difficulty of getting clips to use may pose an issue, but I would love to explore the themes of identity and self in Captain Marvel, especially thanks to the scene "We made you. Vers." "My name...is Carol." That scene resonated with me in a huge way.

This has Stan Lee written all over it and is the reason why so many people loved Marvel over other comics. I grew up loving Batman, and I still do, but my connection with almost every Marvel hero runs deeper than my 9 year old love for Batman. -Josh

I'm glad someone finally talked about Ant-Man. The two Ant-Man movies are a huge delight for me, and I rank them both pretty high in the MCU. They're not only some of the funniest and most charming movies in the MCU, but are full of really strong characters and interesting dynamics. We don't get positive single fathers in fiction very often, and we get divorcees actually being nice to each other and still caring for one another even less, so I'm glad the Ant-Man movies can provide that for people. Plus Paul Rudd is just an absolute bright spot, and is so well casted.

endgame spoilers(?) but it really breaks my heart, that all scott wanted was to just be with his daughter and not miss any more of her growing up by going to jail again... and then he gets trapped in the quantum realm for most of her childhood and misses it completely

I definitely agree with you. Ant-Man feels like a B character among A characters but I think that his worth will be proven in Endgame. (Haven't seen it yet so I am hoping.) Also outside of Scott Lang, Hank, and Hope, who are wonderful heroes you have Luis who might just be the funniest of any character in the MCU. -Josh

I think it's worth noting that Hank Pym in the comics has made *terrible* mistakes in the name of his own ego that he's in a perpetual struggle to escape from. In a way, in this moment he's not just asking Scott if he thinks a person deserves a shot at redemption... he's also asking the comic-reading audience. The films are not the comics, and I think that slavish servitude to them is as much a mistake as disregarding them completely, but regardless these characters have baggage. There are moments that define Superman and Batman to paint them as heroes... and that moment for Hank was a series of mistakes that turned the whole world against him. He's asking "Let me, Hank Pym, have another chance to make up for the things I've done."
@ModernMouse

I'm not as familiar with the comics. I've read a few but was never an avid reader of any Ant-Man stuff. I think this is definitely worth noting and Michael Douglas acts as if he has made some terrible mistakes. I feel like his portrayal goes underrated but when you look back he is fantastic! -Josh

Hank didn't pass on his company to Darren Cross. Cross betrayed him and convinced the other chair members to vote him out, Hope was the deciding vote to kick Hank out of his company. Cross wanted to pursue the Ant-Man suit and Pym Particle technology and Hank prevented that every step of the way, so Darren got rid of him. That's why the betrayal hurts so bad, he literally lost his whole company to his protege and Hank knew it was a matter of time before Darren found out how to harness Pym Particles to make another suit.

Christopher Thomson I definitely misquote this piece. You are right that Hank didn’t pass it along but he did groom Darren to one day takeover.

What a touching look at a great scene. Admittedly, I've both been looking forward to and dreading the next chapter of the MCU. Knowing I'll be saying goodbye to heroes that I've fallen in love with and yet being excited about the new ones on the board. What if the magic is lost? What if it's not the same? What if the enthusiasm wanes? What if they start phoning it all in...? You've given me hope that this ride still has a long way to go before it coasts to a stop

From the very beginning in print Hank was a fish out of water as a superhero...but as a scientist and innovator he brought a lot to the table. I agree with many of the other commentators about AntMan & AM&TW collectively being more than comic relief in the MCU. Scott Lang is a far better choice carrying the mantel of AntMan than Pym ever was. Peruse Avengers vol. 1 from origin to the Kree/Skrull War and you'll realize that Hank was always at his best as a scientist...and even in that, he still needed to be reigned in. He had lost a wife to terrorist. He had terribly low self esteem in all but his masked personae and his early interest in Janet was more than a bit perverse. Comic fans will recall that HE was also Giant Man and Goliath and Yellow Jacket (and this change while glossed over in the comics is pretty twisted). I could go on but suffice to say he makes a much better mentor and father. Scott is easily the more engaging type and plays the AntMan role with more passion and fun than Hank ever could. We the readers and viewers get to see the real power that AntMan brings and the creativity he brings to the powers. We don't give enough credit to insects in the United States...actually we believe them to be "dirty" but they comprise a more profound place in the ecology of the earth than humans ever could, not to mention being incredibly powerful at a species level despite being so specialized. Scott gets this AND he's willing to be a great student which is something Hank's ego had kept him from for a long time. Yay AntMan & Wasp! You rock, your movies rocked and your mostly misunderstood and under valued powers rock! We gotta get the band back together, but with Scott as drummer this time and Hope on keyboards...or that quantum realm button board thingy. Oh...Paul & Evangeline are the mack down pair of the century right after Cap and Peggy. Great contribution man.

Throwing my two cents in: The way Hank talks about his wife and the way he constantly dismisses his daughter always rubbed me the wrong way. From what we know in the movie, the heist is Hope's idea because she's the inside man, but Hank completely takes over her mission and forbids her to go in, instead chosing an underqualified dude with a much higher chance to fail. Throughout the movie, Hank makes it clear that he sympathizes with Scott, a complete stranger, just because they're both dudes in a similar situation, while Hope has always been neglected, kept away from his secrets, and shut down. Hank wants to help Scott get his daughter back, projecting his desire to do the same, when Hope is standing RIGHT NEXT TO HIM. (All of this is pretty consistent and seems intentional, btw.) When he finally talks about Hope's mom, he says his greatest regret is letting his wife be by his side as a hero. Hank is a very realistic portrayal of a man who has some issues with women (specifically, respecting them as his equals and allowing them agency) and I wish someone called him on it much more directly than a couple subtle comments when he finally gives the Wasp a suit. Well, maybe Michelle Pfeiffer will do the honors. As it stands, my first thoughts after seeing Ant Man were: "Wow, I'm surprised Hope didn't flip the table and tell her dad to fuck off like, five times. She not only deserved to be a little bitchy - I mean, the way she was treated was almost the first half of a supervillain origin story. I can imagine a slightly darker version of her that joins Cross, stabs him in the back and becomes Yellow Jacket herself."

It's so hard going down this play list & hearing the occasional jab at Tony. "using technology like the Starks" Howard literally helped create Captain America, equipped him & his howling commandos, helped them during the war & never stopped looking for Steve. Unknowingly, Tony continued that legacy, equipping & housing the Avengers + dedicating himself to clean energy & creating the Vision with Bruce (much like Erskine & Howard made Captain America) all while standing as a one man superhero for 4 years (Iron Man-Avengers 2012) and then wearing himself down to prepare for a threat no one else took seriously. You'd think with how big of a fan the guys on this playlist are supposed to be, or how many times they've seen these movies, they'd notice that.

Audrey II I definitely notice that but my point isn’t a job at Tony and Howard Stark. It points at the rivalry between Hank Pym and Howard Stark. Regardless of all of the good Howard and Tony would eventually add to the world, Hank saw them as a company profiting off of war and wouldn’t stand for it. The Starks created the tech that would give us our heroes but would also supply the worlds villains. Hank didn’t want that and that’s why he kept his suit to himself, never handing over the science behind it. That’s why it hurts him so much when Darren is willing to.

SPOILER I saw a theory somewhere that since we were pretty sure Endgame was gonna use time travel, that Scott was going to travel back in time to talk to Hank Pym in order to get his help and basically set up his own origin story in the future. Of course Endgame took a slightly different route, and I think their version of time travel doesn't actually allow for time loops like this.
