I rewatched Endgame last night and I was moved to tears at that point. I felt even for Captain America (who I'm usually very harsh on) because he was teary-eyed as well. I know the guy takes on more guilt than he should, but... Well, I agree with Tony. They should have been ready, they knew it was coming. Oh, well, I guess the box office wants what the box office wants.

I'm real glad someone did this scene bc it's one of my favorite scenes in the MCU. A few other things I noticed: -Even though he is wearing it casually, Tony is wearing a suit, putting him on the side of the "establishment" and "the man" -Steve calls what Tony is doing to Wanda "internment". He could have said gulag or concentration or whatever, but he chose a shameful thing HIS country did as a comparison. -In the beginning of the scene Steve is sitting and Tony is standing, and once Wanda's situation comes up, Tony is the one sitting and Steve is now standing, show the shift in power in the argument.

not really ... a gulag or a contentration camp is a very specific camp... Wanda is not in a camp. using the world gulag would be completely unwarranted and incorrect. Internment on the other hand (since he didn't say 'internment camp' is just a very generic term for 'incarceration'). Not saying that there isn't some merrit to the point, but there really was no conceivable way in which steve could have said either of those words without sounding ridiculous.

This shows the tragedy of a civil war better than any other movie I've seen. It's easy to label one side as totally in the right and the other totally in the wrong. But here, *both sides are right* . Tony is correct in saying that there needs to be better oversight and accountability, because at the end of the day, people's lives have been put in jeopardy, and people have died because of their actions, while the Avengers haven't been made to answer for any of it. But Steve shows from his experience in the Winter Soldier that you can't trust governments or multi-national organisations, and that the Sokovia Accords limit the Avengers far too much in that not every country has signed it, and they could be stopped from intervening in a crisis. At the same time, both sides are wrong. Tony's approach, from what we see later on, has too much potential for authoritarian abuse from those in power. But Steve is no better, since he's advocating rogue vigilantism and intransigence over Bucky, who has killed a lot of people, brainwashed or no. That sounds a lot like obstruction of justice.

Ultimately both sides thought that the other side would prevent and prohibit them from saving people, and yet at the start of infinity war we see that both sides are still saving lives and doing the right thing

Note that steve got mad after tony called wanda as "weapon of mass destruction". There are possible reasons for this: 1) Steve was offended. In AoU, Steve sees the twin like himself, people who were willing to be experimented on for their country. That's why he never got super mad at the twins after they sided with Ultron (Wanda even was the one who showed Steve's weakness). He always tolerates Wanda for her actions. Also, he always feels like he was used by the goverment as a tool or weapon that can be controlled because of that fact. Even more so after Winter Soldier. And when Tony said that, he probably thought that Tony didn't see some of the Avengers as a person. That's why he didn't believe/ rejected Tony's word that Tony was only trying to keep the team together (which is of course absolutely genuine from Tony) 2) Steve felt responsible. He blamed himself after what happened in Lagos. He felt that Wanda got all the blame instead of him. And when Wanda was confined and was referred to as that term, he felt even more guilty.

I'm not so sure that Steve feels like he was used by the government though, he practically fought tooth and nail to get in. He feels betrayed that it doesn't share his sense of honor and loyalty. It's knight realizing he's given his oath of fealty to an evil king.

"Weapon of mass destruction" also dehumanizes Wanda. Tony can take his armor off and be a person with human rights in the eyes of that law, but to the Sokovia Accords people who are perpetually powered, like Wanda, Steve, Bruce, and Thor, are just weapons, weapons of mass destruction, and when you're not using powerful weapons for violence or intimidation you securely lock them up somewhere.

There was a symbolism with the pens I thought was really interesting but haven't really seen anyone address was that the box the pens were stored in symbolised the Avengers working within the laws. But since the Accords were signed into place, Steve, having taken the pen out and then returned it but left it outside the box, not only foreshadowed the Avengers breaking apart, but also foreshadowed Steve being on the outside of the law and on the run. I honestly haven't seen anyone address that. I've seen people address it as the Avengers breaking up, but not as a foreshadowing of Steve (and the other half of the Avengers) being outside the law after refusing to sign the Accords.

The problem is, while Tony may have a point in principle, that the Avengers need accountability, there is no contest as to who is right in practice. The accords are outrageous and authoritarian as they are in the movie. Even in the final scene, Tony is 100% in the wrong. Yes, Cap shouldn't have kept what happened to Tony's parents from him, but Tony knew Bucky was brainwashed and STILL attempted to murder him in cold blood... There is no defense for Tony's actions here. There is no justification for the accords, as they were in the movie.

@@toatahu2003 I think the ending is really just the straw that broke Tony's back. Yes he knew he was brainwashed but at the end of the day he killed his parents. While I don't agree with his actions I can understand him. In the span of a few days the avengers broke up, he found out that his fight to keep the world save might be putting the world in more danger, and his friend Steve (who he tried to help after finding out Bucky's innocence) has been lying to him about the truth of his parents death. Of course he would be seeing red and go for blood. With the accords I believe Tony say it as the means to an end. As an starting point that can be changed down the line if they play ball now. Still I understand why people get frustrated with Tony in this movie.

Sure, Tony has some good points, but Cap is right and was right from the beginning. Tony was wrong about literally everything. You can't say, "Well neither is totally in the right here," when Tony is so CLEARLY on the wrong side of this fight. Cap made ONE mistake: not telling Tony about Bucky killing his parents, but even THAT is undercut by Tony immediately TRYING TO MURDER BUCKY the second Cap tells him... Clearly Cap was RIGHT not to tell him, because Tony couldn't handle that information... I get WHY, but Tony's side has ZERO merit by the end of the film. Even Rhody turns his back on the Accords by Infinity War. Whatever good points Tony may have had are irrelevant in the context of both his actions and the Accords themselves. It's like someone pushing for peace in 1941... Good message? Maybe. In this context? Hell no.

To say that marvel fans like to watch these "soulless" movies only for the action scenes would be wrong. We LOVE to watch them for the action scenes. But what we love even more is the epilogue between characters. That's the heart of the mcu, no space portals, no evil robots or mad titans, the characters and their relationships with each other are the core and the heart of these films and the amazing action scenes are padding to make an even greater exepriance.

Tbh i think tony makes some sense but trusting in a global government isnt a smart idea like NATO or the league of nations. Tony kinda wants the responsibility on someone else because he has too much guilt and fear already doesn't know how to handle it.

@@GIGio_Official part of me actually thinks a major driving point for Tony was his all consuming fear of thanos again. Pretty much everything he does is because Tony fears that there is something horrible looming in the future that they can't defeat. In Age of Ulton Steve promised they'd fight this together. So Tony trying to hold the Avengers together is not just him trying to hold his family together, but also the one last chance he has against 'whatever is coming'. There are multiple scenes in the movie that show that Tony himself isn't happy with the accords. I think he genuinely believes that they are a step in the right directions, but out of my head I think there are at least three scenes when he says/hints to him not being completely happy with them either but seeing them as a 'minor inconvenience compared to a (very ominous) alternative'. I think Tony finds himself in a situation where he put all his hopes in the Avengers, strengthening their position, but then the world (in a way) turns away from the Avengers, and he can't have that. So he's willing to compromise in order to keep the Avengers not just together as a team but also as a team that is supported by the rest of the world. If the Avengers were hated by the Governments, had to hide or run from the law that would (and did) weaken their position and thus weaken every chance they'd have against the ominous threat. On the other hand if the Avengers could stick as a team, maybe recruit new allies, have the armies, intel and people of all the governments backing them, they'd be all the stronger for it even if they'd lose some independence.

After his speech at MIT, the mother that confronts him at the elevator tells him that she considers *him* responsible for her son's death. Tony gave Whiplash tips on improving his arc tech. He created Ultron. His crud dismissal of Killian 20-some years prior put him on the path of revenge. Tony recognizes all of this and doesn't want that burden, and in doing so, he becomes just the biggest hypocrite. At the start of IM2, he tells Congress that he is privatizing world peace, but now he's willing to cede the authority to deploy the Avengers (potentially even himself as Iron Man) to government. Does this mean he's changed his mind on the merits of government controlling people of mass destruction? Or is Tony still being self-centered? He *is* the Iron Man. He thinks he can privatize world peace. And when the weight of his hubris catches up to him, he seeks to avoid personal responsibility for his actions through the Sokovia Accords. Beyond that, he even considered not helping in Endgame because he found personal happiness with his family- to hell with literally half of the universe. I might argue that Tony has made only one truly selfless act, which goes without saying.

Everyone talked about how Civil War had no ramifications because Steve sending him the phone at the end showed they were "good," but I love how the subsequent movies continued their feud, even up to the first 10 minutes of Endgame. It took Tony over 5 years to get over his falling out with Cap and its probably the sole reason why it took them so long to complete their mission in Endgame.

MCU Captain America isn't perfect, but he's usually right. And unlike Tony, who is trying to do the right thing out of guilt for his past and fear the future, Steve is trying to do the right thing simply because it is the right thing. Is he stubbornly loyal to Bucky? Yes, but he's essentially proven right about that too - that the Bucky he knew is still there under the surface of the brainwashed assassin.

And yes Tony is doing a lot of this out a fear and guilt a lot of his decisions in this movie and prior movies is based on statistics. Vision said it himself since he became Iron Man super villain attacks have gone up. Yes a lot of his actions are a reaction to his guilt and fear but those insecurities come from facts and stats. Hansen him trying to be more pragmatic in this scene.

Only a single incident could actually be blamed on the Avengers and that incident was caused by Tony's carelessness... But that was also something that wouldn't be affected by the accords, that was one of his personal projects going wrong. In fact, all the people that are hurt are those the Avengers fail to save. So blaming them makes no sense. Do you blame firefighters for the deaths of people they were not able to save? Or maybe call all hospitals without a 100% chance of saving all lives murderers??? But when the Avengers fail, it's all of the sudden their fault... somehow...

I feel like this scene is a key to everything that happens between Tony and Cap throughout the movies. -Cap only knew single playboy Howard... the same Howard that was hitting on Peggy which obviously made Cap jealous. (See: First Avenger) -Cap meets Tony and he has the same personality as Howard, Tony becomes a surrogate Howard for Cap. (See: Avengers) -Tony felt unloved by his father and his father was always talking about this Captain America guy which made Tony resent him before he even met him.(See: Avengers) -Tony resents him even more once he meets him for being so "perfect"...everything he feels he isn't.(See: every movie after Tony meets Cap up to the end of Civil War.) -Then Tony resents him because he's NOT "perfect" from Civil War thru Endgame before coming around after the 5 year time jump. All of those threads seem to join up for this conversation (except the Endgame part, obviously)

The one thing you kinda failed to mention was the Fear motivating Tony from that vision he got. Yes he wanted to keep the team together and he wanted to fix his relationship with Pepper. But it was fear driving him forward. Steven has seen what can be lost by those that act out of fear alone. How freedoms are lost through fear through the illusion of security. Tony is try to fix a long term problem "Thanos" with a short Term. A one size fits all fix to a unrealated problem his and team issues. Ignoring the some one the long term issue that can invited. It's that fear that puts them at odds. Steve sees the fear Tony is acting under he see while Tony's stated motivation sounds right it's motivated by the fear of "other's". Represented by Wanda and Tony's willingness to let her take the fall the teams mistakes many of which he had a hand in.

I think it is more or less him saying he doesn't want to stop being Iron Man. Iron Man is something that is a part of Tony. It gave him new meaning and he sees it as the best way to help people yes he wants to end the fight so they could go home, but he learned from age of ultron that he needs to find another way.

That scene where cap says if i see a situation pointing south has nothing to do with cap being not perfect it's showing the audience how close Steve and Tony are and how well tony knows steve that's why when tony says no you don't. It puts a smile on caps face a kinda of acknowledgment of how well tony knows him now he can't even lie to him

Agreed, however Steve isn’t trying to lie to Tony, that’s Steve lying to *_himself_* and Tony knowingly calling him out on it. They both did it previously at the end of AOU as well when Tony puts on about retiring as Iron Man, and Steve pretends he has let go of wanting his own life. Cut to the climax, and it’s essentially the same scenario around the Stark murders. Steve’s initial response is “ I didn’t know it was him” because Steve had purposely ignored his suspicions in order to avoid facing that truth (as later explained in his letter). But Tony, well aware that Steve loses all logic when dealing with Bucky, irately *_makes_* Steve confront it...and (once again) be honest with *_himself_* . Which actually does tie directly into the “flaw” that Zemo was referring to: Steve’s emotional blindspot for Bucky that supersedes his logic - a plot thread effecting Steve’s actions all the way back to the bombing in Lago and what Zemo exploited to divide the team.

I'm very glad you came at this in a neutral way and not "See this is why Steve/Tony is right." So many people make it out like one side actually has more point to it than the other, but there isn't. When I first watched it, Cap seemed like he was an idiot and Tony was 100% in the right, but then I remembered Shields helicarriers, America nuking itself, Hydra corrupting everyone, all the evil that came from the stuff people did trying to prevent evil. Both sides are equally right and wrong.

This is what I wish Civil War was really about. Don't get me wrong, I liked Civil War, but it really wasn't about the philosophy of Tony vs Steve or the merits (or lack thereof) of the Sokovia Accords. That's what I wanted more of. This is the one scene we got and it shows us for a very brief moment the views of morality and utility these two characters see (or don't see) in the Sokovia Accords. And it doesn't leave with one side being definitively more correct; it just leaves it as it is. Civil War would have been better if there was more of this.

I feel like its worthy of note that Tony was trying get Cap on his side for so long because he feared losing his family and if Cap and Tony did split his family would be irreversibly damaged. But then when he and Cap fight towards the end of Civil War he says he WAS Cap's friend. This emphasizes a change in Tony's attitude towards his family. It signals to the audience that Tony is thinking that maybe it wasn't worth holding onto so much in the first place. That maybe fighting so hard for so long wasn't getting him anywhere and so he decides to let Cap go. But then he has the feeling at the compound that everyone has after a fight where you say something you didn't mean and are just now looking back and thinking "man what have i done?" because he never really wanted to split with Cap but he is definitely hurt and doesn't know if he can forgive Cap.

I think personally, I prefer the earlier scene at Avengers compound. That argument may be more cerebral and philosophical, and carry less emotion than this one, but IT SETS UP the nature of their antipathy in this movie. "When I saw what my weapons were capable of in the wrong hands, I shut it all down." "Tony, you CHOSE to do that. If we sign this document, we surrender our right to choose." Tony, wracked with a MOUNTAIN of guilt, is acknowledging that the collateral damage caused by the Avengers' actions means they cannot continue to operate as they have been, without the goodwill of the populace they protect. The proffered path to that result, is government oversight. Steve, fresh off of his experiences of disillusionment in the system he used to defend, is keenly aware that the political priorities of such a government body WILL conflict with the Avengers' own priorities. The thing is, NEITHER of them is entirely WRONG. And neither of them is entirely RIGHT. The murkiness and nuance of their stances perfectly reflects the grey moral landscape in which they all find themselves. That such a set of ideas could be so clearly laid out in dialogue is just BRILLIANT writing. Of course, being who they are, Steve and Tony are UNCOMPROMISINGLY dedicated to their positions. And the conflict ensues.

We both love this scene but for very different reasons. The way you see this scene and the characters is almost the complete opposite of the way I see it. I see Tony still wanting to control things (as he did with Ultron). Yes, he realizes his mistakes (Ultron, lying to Pepper about hanging up his suit, making umpteen affected suits) but he doesn't ever learn from them. He keeps making the same mistake again and again: believing he can "save" earth without taking people's free will and independence or his teammates' opinions into serious consideration. To him: the end justifies the means. It obviously stems from his childhood: he was an only child who was ignored by his father. He craved for attention and while he was a genius at a very early age, he has never fully matured. He acts like a child a lot of the times. Just look at his short-temper. How quick he is to point out the faults of others and how he constantly has to bring up to everyone all of his accomplishments. Steve, on the other hand, is centered and the most moral character of the MCU--he is inherently good and the serum he took only made him 10x more. He sees the slippery slope: give a government control over your own private organization and lives, and it's bound to go into poop. Civil War is my favorite film of the MCU and in my top 10 films of all time in general. Tony and Steve represent two methods of thinking and governing. And while I may strongly disagree with Tony, he brings up valid points and questions that I believe many of us should ask ourselves...even though, I personally would respond the same way Steve responds.

I didn't start taking them seriously until this film, and then I went back and saw all the previous films and saw the depth within the stories. I've been a Marvel girl since I was young and as a fan I was disappointed too many times by Fox and Sony that I didn't think this "MCU" would be any better. Thankfully, I was wrong. I don't think Tony wanting to sign the accords was a selfless act or him taking responsibility. Tony may have thought so, but 3 things are in the way of that. 1) Earlier in the movie Steve calls out Tony by saying the accords don't have the Avengers take responsibility it just shifts the blame. 2) In this scene Tony admits he has thought the accords would split the difference between him and Pepper, meaning on some level his decision is selfish. 3) Tony springs the accords on the Avengers with Ross without really consulting or conidering any of their opinions. It's just him making another unilateral decision for the team like with him making Ultron. Edit: spelling

I can see that. I interpret it as him doing what needs to be done to protect the world which is something he has been trying to do since Avengers. He does have a person stake in it, but I believe he was doing what he thought was the best way to keep the Avengers together and be ready for any impending threat.

Banner's comparing the Avengers breakup to the Beatles is apt. Lennon and McCartney were terrific solo, but together they became something special. I think it's somewhat the same with Steve and Tony. The reason it slightly moved in Ultron is that Mjolnir showed Steve had potential to weild it but because Steve is a war monger (like Thor was in his first movie) proved he was not yet worthy until end game. End Game showed how Steve became worthy and it started with the scene where steve conducted the group counsiling on people coming together to talk a about post snap life and how Steve learned that he could be more of a hero without going to war

I want to start a Utoob channel new, just to joint the discussion. However, I have to do at least an Honerable Mention of Bucky's Escape. (Spoiler, He doesn't get away.) What I love about it is how it resets back to The Winter Soldier (Really could have used his theme in here somewhere.) The movie, the style of spy thriller Cap isn't even all too aware that he's In at this point, he's too worried about his friend, but you notice that Cap struggles to keep up? This isn't his world, it's The Winter Soldier's. He leads the chase, and as more Continets get involved (America, Russia, Africa, and then finally Europe) I'm going to arbitrarily say it ends when he retrieves his bag, King Tchala (And Falcon) get involved, and escalates a notch, but from the Apartment to the stairwell scene, to the adjacent roof, his Exit Strategy was working, and it's just human Spec-ops vs Captain America, AND The Winter Soldier. (I'm not going to kill anyone.) We hadn't seen this before, the 2 of them fighting side by side, and they've got a SWAT team showing up to give them fun stuff to work with, like the Door Knocker. Easily one of the underrated action scenes in the Franchise. (Captain America:) Probably by being overshadowed by scenes in this movie, and the previous movie (: TWS) but this is where the 2 came together into the same narrative. That's when we the audience caught up, and we're all on the same page...

Old fans will remember Stan and Jack deliberately built their 'heroes' with flaws. Tony's was he was an alcoholic which the movies 'reinterpreted', although there are some subtle moments. I urge you to go back and revisit the dialogue from the perspective of an addict; it gives a vastly different and more nuanced perspective on the character and his relationships I wish they kept.
