This scene also marks a major turning point in Cap's character, both in this movie specifically and for his arc in the MCU in general. Coming into this scene, he's the Good Soldier. He's part of the chain of command. It may not be perfect -- he sees some shifty stuff at SHIELD prior to this -- but in general it works. This scene, though, makes it personal. The authorities are not always the good guys. The chain of command can be terribly wrong. People and organization he worked with and trusted are now abusing that trust and trying to take him down. The Cap from the beginning of Winter Soldier probably would have signed the Sokovia Accords without much argument. The Cap from the end of this film couldn't. And this scene is why.

@justinkruzisafag5 жыл бұрын
Very nicely said. However, it's rare to see any "good guys" with authority. They are typically the ones causing terrorism, just like in this very movie. Steve didn't sign the accords because he knew this fact for 100% after this movie. He tried to trust authority and got betrayed, which never happened again after. When Thanos snapped and the authorities were gone, everything was peaceful, everyone was united and not divided. The original definition of terrorism is government by intimidation, which is exactly what was going on in the movie and well, pretty much every day. Only fools side with the government, which is why Tony and everyone else was no longer apart of it by infinity war.

I'm not sure I agree with the analysis here. Watching this scene "cold," I for one wasn't certain that Capt would escape. The fact that they deliberately setup the Shield (not yet revealed as Hydra) agents as using non-lethal weapons made the possibility for Capt to be captured, only to gain more information and escape later. Because you knew that even if he lost he wouldn't die, it actually seemed more likely that he COULD lose.
@xJavelin15 жыл бұрын
I agree. Of course he was never going to die. And was never going to be beaten in a fair fight. But those Strike Team guys had planned ahead - the magnetic bracelets were a very specific anti-Cap non-lethal weapon they had come up with. So here was Cap getting ambushed by guys fully prepared for his super abilities in the center of what was (now suddenly) an enemy stronghold. Quite likely that he could have been captured at that point. After all, later in the film he *is* captured by those guys. But is then sprung with the help of an unexpected ally (Maria Hill). This could easily have happened here instead.
@bendesch985 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I agree too. It's too easy to use hindsight bias to say that everyone knew they where gonna fight in the elevator and that cap 'obviously' wouldn't get captured, but I disagree. After the first threat the tension gradually build up while the audience tried to figure out if something was gonna happen and if so when and how. I definitely did not have a 'oh shit, they're in for it now' vibe when watching this, not even when Cap said his brilliant line right before the fight (and if I did, it would concern Cap just as much as the other guys). Cap looked like he was struggling for most of the fight, and his triumf did not feel easy or forced, it felt like it was earned. And even then, just thinking about how he would escape was a whole other thing to consider afterwards. Also, him being captured felt like a very real possibility when watching it, even if our hindsight bias would tell us otherwise after knowing what happens. All in all I did not feel like this analysis did the scene justice.
@Sharikacat5 жыл бұрын
The visual greatness of this scene is that A) it isn't bogged down by special effects and B) the setting is small, but the angles were chosen well so you could keep track of the action and where people are (you can see agents trying to pick themselves up instead of wondering why everyone hasn't dog-piled on Cap). From a narrative perspective, consider that A) the Strike Team works with Cap and are of course familiar with his abilities and limitations, making them an ideal squad to capture him but mostly that B) Cap seems to have gone to that elevator more or less directly from Pearce's office, which means that not only did Pearce call in that ambush right away but that *he has agents on standby to subdue Cap* as evidenced by the magnetic cuffs on the briefcases.
@mrq17015 жыл бұрын
I don't know. The outcome didn't seem certain to me when I first saw the movie. Those magnetic shackle things worked really well. For a minute I thought Cap might get captured.

Right! This was an almost perfect plan--confined space, massively outnumbered, and utterly isolating his limbs--i.e. his main weapons outside the shield.
@moving_piktures5 жыл бұрын
Fair point. All things considered, it was the best plan they could have put together.
@DanStaal5 жыл бұрын
One point on this type of scene is the hero never *starts* the fight. They're retaliating - the monster's just been mugged. And part of that is that the attackers must have a justified belief that they could win with the information they had. In Logan, they just thought he was any old guy - but here they know exactly what Cap's capable of. So they have to have a plan that in their minds could conceivably beat him. Their plan wasn't to fight him - it was to capture him with surprise and numbers. Get him off balance just long enough to immobilize him, then deal with him. And if Cap hadn't worked out what they were trying, it might even have worked.

Narratively it works, Pierce had just threatened Cap. And of course, it wasn’t a threat for later, it was supposed to be a starting dialogue for after he had Cap beaten and taken in.... didn’t work so well though, did it. Cap is at his best in close quarters, where he can punch, kick and bash you with his shield. That was their mistake. They had a better shot with the bridge scene but now Cap has a vehicle. He would’ve had very little chance without it. Not to say he would’ve lost then either, but the stakes would’ve been higher

@@moving_piktures I agree with your separation points. And in my head the fight against the people showed one aspect of caps persna. Leave the men who were fighting for bad men good and clobbered but if possible just clobbered. And then the we see he takes the smallest least sophisticated old school hadn't changed since the 40s motorbike and destroys the most advanced machine available with basically his bare hands and heart. I didn't have a lot of captain America comic as a kid. But one in particular had someone following cap but never knew who he was. But judged his character by what was left in his wake. I think one of the reasons why this fight seen is grear because there was an underlying betrayal of Captains trust. Yeah these guys are Hydra agents but they were on missions with him, you'd think on some level they would give Cap a warning on whats to come. This becomes a turning point for Cap believing the Government or Shield can be infiltrated as well .

This along with “I can do this all day” encompasses everything great about Steve When he ask if “anyone wants to get out” it’s not just a badass boast it’s him giving them a genuine chance to do the right thing. He already knows at least one fo them is nervous so he gives them all a chance to just leave. None of them take it and he wipes the floor with them all as predicted but still Steve gave them a chance when he didn’t have to.

American actions sequences ALWAYS have the hero struggling against the odds. They can't resist adding this element even in "oh sh't, they are in for it now" scenes.
