It's really unfortunate all around. Altria just wasn't capable of giving Mordred the love she wanted while she was pursuing her ideals of kingship and as a response to that rejection Mordred became the tool of destruction that Morgan's manipulations set her up to be. It could have been different if either of them had been better at communicating to come to an understanding. Altria had every reason to resent Mordred for what she represented and yet didn't hate her which is already pretty generous but still came off as detached and disapproving. Meanwhile Mordred didn't even try to view the situation from Altria's perspective and instead acted on the entitled bias that Morgan raised her to have. This ultimately doomed her relationship with the only person who could have reasonably saved her by forcing King Arthur to choose between her and Briton which was never going to go well since Altria had already committed to sacrificing her entire life for Briton.

@@kylepessell1350 yeah, Morgan played everyone like a fiddle here. She's really up there in the "so petty and entitled it's inhuman list" for certain. What's interesting to me is how Mordred reflects both Artoria and Morgan. Like Morgan, Mordred desires recognition and appreciation, she is short tempered and oftentimes self-righteousness. Like Artoria, Mordred desires to serve and protect, she is incredibly stubborn and oftentimes struggles with self-worth. What is probably most important thing to remember about Artoria and Mordred is that Artoria had every rational reason to kill Mordred on the spot, (Even emotional as I'm sure the memory of Mordred's "creation" is not a pleasant one for her) but didn't. Merlin even advised her to off Mordred but Artoria still refused to kill the one that was raised to destroy her. It's sad that Artoria had already given herself entirely to her kingdom and utopic ideals. Perhaps in chaldea she may allow herself to express her regret and pain. (But nah! funny bad parent memes are much more entertaining...)

I think that Mordred would have made a great son to Artoria if things were different. Even at her worst, she was more motivated by being hurt and not having a way to deal with it due to being y’know… mentally 8 due to being a homunculus. Plus even with how Morgan raised her, Mo-san still turned out to be a decent person until everything went to hell in a hand basket.

The main issue is that Altria had already committed herself to the self-destructive ideal kingship of Briton which prevented her from giving Mordred the emotional connection she desperately wanted. Altria couldn't acknowledge Mordred in a personal capacity and, rather than understanding Altria's position, Mordred fell back on the biased entitlement that Morgan had raised her to have. Mordred lashed out to force Altria to choose between her and Briton and naturally, as someone who had already sacrificed everything for Briton, Altria tragically couldn't choose her.

It’s still sad all the same, but I still think that Mordred, from the more positive aspects of her we get in FGO shows that she still had potential to be the heir Artoria needed if she had proper love and guidance. If even Iskandar and Gilgamesh get criticized by her for how they were kings then how is Mordred going to measure up? The potential is definitely there but it's very hard to say that Mo-chan could live up to her old man's legacy once Artoria wasn't around to guide her if it got to the point of natural succession. It also occurs to me that even if Mordred COULD successfully take Altria's place on the throne, the kingship of Briton was an incredibly brutal position which Mordred would have to have sacrificed everything for just like her father did. It's possible that Altria's decision was partially influenced by an unconscious desire to protect her from that kind of fate.

You know I actually read that last part somewhere as well as a fan theory that another reason for Artoria’s rejection was an attempt to protect Mordred from the burden of kingship as well! Again, that lack of empathy and inability to connect with others due to her role as a king prevented Artoria from specifically telling Mordred that, which I think could have cleared a LOT up. Even then, Mordred demonstrated her potential when she was made regent while Artoria was away. Sure it was to bring things crashing down, but in the short time she was left in charge, she had made the people happier and more prosperous under her than her father. In fairness, the people under Artoria knew only war and strife, so any positive change was welcome. Now that I think about it, I can’t help but wonder how Morgan le Fay would have taken it if Mordred and Artoria ended up building a mutually good relationship? Morgan would have probably doubled down her attempts to bring Artoria to ruin. Don’t even get me started on the whole, Quantum Time-Lock…

Artoria cares for everyone especially her Knights. Mordred was the manifestation of all of Artoria's failures and threats to her kingdom. But despite having every rational reason to kill Mordred right at that crucial moment of horrible revelation she decides not to. But she finds herself unable to recognize Mordred as she didn’t fully understand the burden and sacrifice of kingship. (Also Mordred is a incestuous bastard and having her as the prince would destroy Camelot's reputation; Morgan is the worst) So she does nothing. And crushes her only child's dreams. Sorry for ranting.
