The 14-inch comes with a 67-watts charger (base model) or a 96-watts one ($20 option for the base model, included in any 10-core config). However, the 14-inch doesn't need the 140-watts charger to fast charge, it's enough with the 96 one.

the old i9 used in the last Macs was a 14nm process, m1 is 5nm, so you should be looking at an processing and electrical efficiency improvement of ~50-60% right there, given the i9 was not heat sinked properly in the previous Apple devices, you are looking at a further 10-20% difference on top of the die size change. Given the SoC linked memory I suspect the reason we are not seeing bigger improvements in is the strict power limitations on the M1 SOC, and possibly the nvme drive may be bottlenecking. I usually run a 3 monitors, 2 for code (split and unsplit for unit tests etc.), 1 for live-testing/research. Good review, rare to see someone on a mac using unit tests. be interesting to see more complex projects compiling on it, but the only ones I can think of are large-scale industry applications which are PC only.

This is so weird. I bought an apple certified refurbished m1 max 64gb and with a single static open tab while sitting idle battery was draining by itself and was out within just 8 hours. If I did anything heavier than that like say open youtube, spotify, webstorm with 1 project ( which was already indexed) and then just clicked webstorm tabs without any coding at all (btw I profiled the extensions, everything's minimal) - battery died within 6 hours. I don't do heavy VM, android studio non stop compile work. With that load it'd probably die within an hour easily. So I replaced the initial refurbished and got another one from apple, exact same specs, and I have exact same issue. So it's either I am "lucky" for the second time in the row even tho battery is completely new and in normal condition or you are extremely lucky with your m1 max holding days when doing light to medium work and holding 6h with extreme heavy compile loads.

Basically I use MBP 2012 16GB, so I guess any upgrade will give me some improvement in performance, but... I am mostly developing node applications (and some php rarely), all run in docker containers. I am trying to make a choice between: a) MBA m1 16GB (best price), but I am worried about to low memory b) MBP 13'' m1 32GB, looks pretty ok, but at very top of my budget c) Dell XPS 15'' 32GB linux. More or less like MBP, but with bigger screen, better docker support, but probably also plenty of issues with "office" tools, like zoom, etc. I would like to hear if should I already eliminate option A, and do you still think MBP is a good choice with all docker issues that could be found over the internet?

Hi Adrian, If price is a limiting factor you may want to consider pre-sale as opposed to a regular retail sales format. I myself am buying a new MacBook Pro through Artis Tech, a company now based in Katowice. Minus 25 per cent off retail price (plus room for further negotiation) if you're ready to put up with two and a half month's wait. I hope this may be of help.

I am a software engineer and so far I have by-passed Rosetta. Have you run into any negatives using Rosetta in general? I am trying to stay native. For what I am doing, web development mainly (Golang, Node, Angular, mysql) and doing casual Xcode dev work the machine (m1 max 32gb 14") is doing very well. Memory usage has been under 20gb.

My short experience, I got my work Xcode projects only building under Rosetta which is not fast, it is also buggy; hanging simulators, hanging simulator processes (also after logoff), swipe issues with the iOS sims, failing UI Tests. I bought the M1 Max with 64 GB and you will need the memory, I had 3 Xcode projects open, Android Studio (empty) and a few Simulators (iOS), and the load was 38 GB which means if you had the 32GB your system would be swapping memory already, just my 2 cents...

I want to focus on robotics, 3D design of AI tools and devices and learn more of C++, Python and programming hardware, and some hacking… I felt the 16 inch is way too clumsy for me… So I am thinking of going with the 14 inch… So, I like to hear others opinion from direct experience with the MacBook Pro max 14 inch… Some people say there is no point to configure it with 32 cores as that will eat the battery life of the 14 inch, others say they got 32 cores and 64 ram and see no problems at all with it…. so I like to ask here what people have to say: is it useless to go up to 32 cores compared to 24 cores? Is there a point to go up to 64 tb ram? I might get involved in AR games using c++ in the future… but right now I study programming and want a machine that is future-proof for the kind of work I aim to do for the coming ten years! So please advice me so I do not choose a machine that will not be up to the configurations of my future needs but also not a machine that is just maxed out for the sake of maxing out a machine and so just waste my money when there is perhaps no need for that for the work I aim to do with it. @@bren.r perhaps I should chose the MacBook Max chip with 64 gb ram over the Pro chip with 32 gb ram now then!? 🤔 must make a final choice at Wednesday… after that my store got no machines at all for 12 weeks… I aim to be a programmer, get into ethical hacking and some machine learning, also create my own IOT devices for smart homes is very interesting for me… so I will be using VMs, but on a private level I am also doing singing and acting, so will be using a DAE, maybe Logic Pro and then Final cut. For ethical hacking studies I will install Kali Linux on bare metal I think. Right now I am studying the basics by python, C++, web development for my own music production needs with some javascript, and then also the command line and some network studies… I wanted the Mac Studio so that I could fit it all in one studio environment at home and build up an actual home studio, so bought mics, audio interface and so on for recording professionally now… but they do not yet have it and say it might take 16 weeks to get that computer… Right now I got an iMac 27 inch from 2010… 😇😂 every month apps shut down and say they cannot be updated due to a need of a new Mac OS that the 2010 iMac cannot install… So is time to find a new computer… However; the cost for these computers made me think twice: what they got is a 16 inch Pro chip with 32 gb ram and 1 tb storage and is about 81 dollar per month for 36 months and the 16 inch Max chip comes with 64 gb ram and 2 tb storage and it is about 120-130 dollars per month for 36 months and then one give the computer back to the store and take out a new machine when new models are out and rent them for another three years. That is their rental plan…. However, if one order a Mac Studio Max chip with 64 gb ram and 4 tb storage from them is only 90 dollars a month for the same 36 months… So, this is why I also feel one pay a lot for the macbook pro max with 64 gb ram in comparison.. I already got mechanic keyboards and a great new ultra wide screen… But waiting 16 weeks.. Hmm… does not sound much fun. Though I am a student now, but I won’t be in a year from now, so must think ahead as well… My goal is to work from home or from anywhere, be a Digital Nomad developer, or ethical hacker, maybe a SOC analyst… Really not sure if I should hold my horses and money and wait for a Mac Studio?!? 😤🫤🤔 One will lock oneself up to a three year contract to rent an apple device from them, but that is the only way I can afford a new computer for now as a student…😵💫🫣what would be best to do!? 🤷🏼

@@SimplicityForGood honestly just go for it. You’ll probably be kicking yourself years later. While you could argue 32 is enough because the swap is fast, I’ve also heard people having system hangs when that memory pressure is high and swapping. Hi there, I've just placed an order for a 32 GB Max with software development in mind and occasional game of Sid Myers's Civilization. Your video makes me question that choice. It appears that a 32 GB M1 Pro optimizes cost/RAM and battery life and a 64 GB M1 Max optimizes (really: maximizes) RAM (and minimizes memory swaps). My choice does neither. Should I change it while I can? 🤔 Also, I'd love to hear about the color choice. I ordered a Space Grey. I plan on keeping this machine for years. Because of that I'm having anxieties about wear and tear. Are those justified? Should I switch to Silver [while I'm at possible order adjustment] or concerns about chips, scratches, color tear at palmrest with the Space Grey should not deter me from that choice? Thank you in advance for your advice!
@D3VTec2 жыл бұрын
Hey Adrian, your concerns are valid. I think for Civ the M1 Pro will do excellent. No need to bump Ram on that account. As for color, I have noticed some wear on the Space Gray versions of MBP's I own, but I have a few gouges on my Silver ones too. They are slightly more visible on the Space Gray but it doesn't affect utility. Palm rests don't wear, only when events that are metal on metal cause real scrapes and issues. My personal opinion, if you do plan on just owning it until it dies or it loses utility outright, let the scrapes and wear on either color show how much many miles and value you've claimed from the tool. At the end of the day, they are tools and they really don't need pampered. We are rough on these laptops, they are built for pros!

The M1 Max has more GPU cores and double the memory bandwidth when compared to the M1 Pro. So it comes down to how Android/iOS builds leverage the extra GPU power (if at all) and the extra memory bandwidth. Emulators could benefit from the extra GPU power though.
