43:55 In my experience, Gen 4 feels a lot like gen 1, in that pretty much any team you build will be pretty viable, as long as it includes the same 4 mons on it somewhere. In this case - Skarm, Jirachi, Clef, and Rotom. Throw any other two nerds on the back of that squad, and you'll be playing gen 4. Otherwise, you might have some casual fun, but you're going to be subject to a lot of RNG along the way.

Real talk, I appreciate what smogon has done for competitive singles but the real reason why people want Jirachi suspected over Machamp is because they know they aren't immune to bias and ego. Too many people over the many years have argued in favor of Jirachi. People don't just go and admit they were wrong especially when their old opinions are immortalized. Gen 4 Jirachi suspect will never happen. Its already had too much controversy in the past that, in the minds of those who can do something about it, has already been "settled" in an argument they had 10+ years ago that could be summed up in "just bring rotom, heatran, your own jirachi, and a cleric bro" completely waving away the rng issue as a skill issue. Machamp suspect had enough momentum gathered in recent times. Jirachi suspect will never happen, i guarantee it.

I think banning Dynamic Punch or No Guard is better than banning Machamp since without either one of those, the Parafusion strat Machamp strives for becomes nonexistent. I saw people saying they might try Sash Machoke in Machamp place and it might become another Dugtrio/Diglett scenario. As far as Jirachi goes, you might have to ban Jirachi sadly. Iron Head ban is more ideal but Zen Headbutt or even regular Headbutt exists as a replacement and a Body Slam ban is just silly and would just be replaced by Thunder Wave or Thunder Punch for para chance. I know people are scared of the repercussions of banning Jirachi, but it’s just too toxic and uncompetitive in the tier at the moment and needs to go. The only way to save it would be to ban Para itself but I know that becomes too complex of a discussion for the council.

It's not "the same" or "good enough"; some people like Machamp, and would quite like to be able to use it. If the pokemon is perfectly fine if dynamic punch and/or no guard is removed, then banning _those_ while leaving the 'mon legal allows people to keep using a pokemon they like without the issues involved. It's the simpler, less-drastic option, not some sort of unnecessarily complex alternative. If the discussion was based around a pokemon you like, with one problematic aspect, I suspect you'd prefer the problematic bit to be addressed rather than people just going "it's too complicated to ban Priority200BPPursuit, lets just ban Ttar instead". Similarly, while I don't particularly like Jirachi, I'd rather see it just not be allowed to run flinching moves (and perhaps freezing ones) rather than be banned wholesale, unless it has a bunch of problematic traits in gen 4. Looking at the FSG video on Machamp, it sounds like it has some interesting impacts on the metagame- especially the lead -that don't seem unhealthy if we were to get rid of the RNG clownshow of DP, so... it seems like it's worth keeping the 'mon around and just banning DP. And if that _isn't_ the case, if it isn't actually competitive at all without DP, then it just won't get run, so same result (except maybe it'd drop to UU and perhaps be good there, rather than just being flat out banned? Is that how the tiering works? If so, that sounds like a good thing). AFAIK the champ is overshadowed by other fighting types in nearly every other gen, so it'd be a shame to ban it from a rare spot in the limelight just because one of its moves is BS. TL;DR: if Machamp's only issue is perfect accuracy dynamic punch, and DP isn't interesting on other pokemon _without_ no guard, banning DP seems like the simpler, more restrained approach, while still solving the issue.

Smogon doesn't allow bans of moves if there is only one abuser of it. And in the end banning machamp and banning D punch/ no guard doesn't have much of a difference

@bad8136 Policies can change, though, and if there's no compelling reason for such a policy, why follow it? If nothing else even runs the move, and that move is the only problem with the pokemon, it'd be far better to just ban the move rather than the 'mon. And it does make a difference... an entire pokemon would be, y'know, left legal to use. Either Machamp is still used just without the move that people find problematic, in which case excellent, or it turns out it's not competitive without the move, in which case it'll stop being used (perhaps dropping to a lower tier, which afaik wouldn't be possible if it were outright banned?), in which case we get the same result. The only way I can see it being better to ban the pokemon instead of the move is if either there's some technical reason why it's harder to do the latter, or if there are other pokemon that _do_ run DP, and we want to avoid complex bans. Frankly the move seems BS regardless of whether it has full accuracy or not, and I doubt anyone would be more upset at the move being banned than the 'mon. And if it really is some super popular choice for choice scarf Primeape or somesuch, then... just ban no guard; it's a Machamp-exclusive ability in that gen anyway, and you'd still be able to use guts at least, and apparently we consider the move itself fine in that scenario. Jumping straight to banning the 'mon is skipping two or three less impactful options, and the ban scalpel is more desirable than the ban hammer

Maybe a hot take: the vast majority of games using a smogon format are not played on cartridge. Complex bans are completely fine. The team builder will tell you if you use a banned move or ability. Keeping it simple mattered far more when people were trying to emulate smogon rules and play cart vs cart. I wouldn’t even necessarily be reflexively against it if they set a IV cap on certain stats on a pokemon. It’s fine.

Now I've been into competitive pokemon since gen 4 and I know the red tape is there for a reason but also it feels like with the hindsight afforded by 20 years of playing this shit they should just implement a hax clause banning shit people hate and move on. No reason to get old man machamp caught in all of this if the target is clear in the council's minds.
