1:48 I don't want to be a nerd, but Sisyphus's punishment was originally just to die. However, because he tricked Thanotos and later Hades and Persephone, he got the boulder punishment. He tried to do a pointless task, escaping death, and thus he must do a pointless task for the rest of eternity.

Sisyphus was punished because he imprisoned Death (the personification of death, like the Grim Reaper) when Death came for him (he did not want to die). And then when he got caught and was to be judged for his crimes, he tricked Hades and his wife, Persephone and once again escaped death for a while. So his punishment is fitting, since he did get his immortality at the end, just not in the way he wanted to.
@jordanrijsdijk54969 ай бұрын
Did he really get his immortality though? He’s stuck in the fields of punishment in the underworld. Stuck doing a meaningless task for all eternity, because he tried escaping death.
@LiterallyMe919 ай бұрын
@jordanrijsdijk5496 immortality just means being forever. It doesn't specify what you do in that forever. Sisyphus gets to exist forever, just not doing anything he wants. I'm not sure about this exactly, but in Greco-Roman Mythology, Apollo used the exact same technicality to punish the Sibyll of Cumea by giving her immortality but not specifying eternal youth.
@_APV_9 ай бұрын
He also trapped the Greek version of deathbringer for a while, right? And the god of war was upset about wars becoming pointless, because people stopped dying. And someone else was upset about old and sickly suffering.

This type of game really demonstrates how most games truly operate, there is a gameplay loop and the developer's job is to make it fun, challenging, and rewarding. The simple additional threat of losing all progress to any mistake is so powerful that it fundamentally changes how we perceive these games completely. Any game can do this, and that's a big realization to have.
@Sanguiris9 ай бұрын
If Sisyphus had to do this for all eternity and never actually "win", why even bother doing it at all?
@RovichSevidal7 ай бұрын
Because in Albert Camus' book, The Myth Of Sysiphus, Camus' interpretation Sysiphus is a man who struggles and keeps on struggling despite suffering eternally, despite how meaningless it truly is, despite the fact that he will never win, and despite the fact that he can just end himself in someway anytime if the gods are okay with that, he keeps on pushing the bolder, because he enjoys it. He enjoys his eternal punishment despite how pointless it is and how he can never reach the peak, and that it's easy for him to just give up and let the gods punish him via death or some other worse eternal damnation, he doesn't care about winning, he doesn't care about how it's meaningless, he doesn't care about why he has to do this, he doesn't care about any of that, cause' why bother caring about all that sad stuff and the absolute pointlessness of it all when he's currently happy with himself and enjoys his bolder pushing punishment, so he will simply not care and enjoy his eternal task of pushing a bolder and then some at least that's what Camus thinks and says in his book. Or in short summary; Sysiphus basically says "ehh why not, it's not like I really care, and damn this is a huge ass bolder, and heavy too" and then names his bolder "Baldy" or smthn, and then chooses to have a relationship with it cause it has beautiful curves in his opinion. Anyways I enjoy commenting this, pointlessness be damned I still feel happy either way.

1:45 First of all, Sysiphys didnt just have to lift a boulder, he was basically sent to hell and had to lift that boulder for all of eternity. Imagine playing a foddyian game forever, except it has a physical toll on you and you can never beat it. Second, Prometheus didnt just give fure to humans, he stole it from the gods. So sure giving fire to humans isnt as bas as killing a bunch of people, but from the gods perspective, anyone who stole from them deserved a mich bigger punishment then anything done to humans because they believed themselves above us. Also, keep in mind that Sysiphys was also basically sent to hell, so its not like Promethius was sent to hell and Sysiphys just had to lift a rock. Remember he was liftinf the rock for all eternity. Anyway just wanted to get that off my chest. I also know that it may sound like it, but i do not believe greek gods were actually real, i was just talking from that perspective.
