It's this some kind of counter -capitalism? Lower rent and higher wages is not how the system is designed to work. The actual system is designed so that everyone works and a tiny fraction that does no work takes all the profit. If we give the people anything to advance society then who will do the work?

Wrong! They already get all that through tax payer funded programs. The issue is most don’t want the help. Either they struggle to change their lifestyle or their drug addiction. Forced intervention would be the solution. Forcing these people back into functioning society members and immediate prevention of new ones from developing is what actually going to do anything for these people.

I grew up in the heart of Mar Vista. It’s nothing like what it used to be before. 20+ years ago the streets had a mix class population and most of my friends in school were second generation Mexican Americans, so many families from Oaxaca lived there. When the 2008 housing bubble crash occurred so many of them were forced to move out including me and my family. We had a beautiful home with a front yard, back yard and a garage that we payed 500$ / month for and the houses were going for about 180k-250k on average. Later on when all of the B list celebs and indie actors / influencers moved in to the area everything shot up to even more outlandish prices. Now you see homes going for millions and good luck trying to find an apartment that isn’t a condo for less than $3,000 / month. We are living in very strange times. I miss the old Mar Vista area and the old L.A.

I love that the real problem was 3 different people in charge of the exact same area. You might think that one person should be able to do their job but nope; it takes 3 people to look at each other and not do the job. Instead of having the problem solved 3 times faster with 3 leaders in charge, they all decided to not do anything for over 10 years instead. That will show everyone who is really in charge.....

I worked for the state of Nevada, and we’d always clear the homeless camps from state property and they’d move to Las Vegas property, then Vegas would clean up the camp then they’d just move back to state property. It’s a never ending back and forth cleanup. The city and state offer endless programs to get them off the streets, but most refuse because they have to follow rules and be told what to do and responsibilities

A few years ago, I worked in a Christian food pantry in Dallas where the nonprofit agency offered a place to stay for the homeless. When I would interview the homeless and tell them they could be off the streets and under a roof, they said “no”. They didn’t want responsibilities or rules. They liked being homeless because they felt freedom and no responsibilities.

We have a different set of homeless here in the Top End of Australia, and their arrival is as predictable as the tides. Our idiot government maintains communities on floodplains, and by Jan/Feb many will be flown to the city as their homes are inundated. The focus is inevitably on getting alcohol and things go south from there. Assaults, shopstealing, public urination and worse - all inflicted on taxpayers and ratepayers who want no part of it

Ok, how does one sign up for all these programs, for the sake of argument? You ever actually talk to these people, or do you just force them off the land and throw away what little stuff they have? I live in Las Vegas, and everyday I walk by ever expanding homeless camps packed full of men and women, and you mean to tell me that all those people living in tent cities are there by choice? I have seen people dying from heatstroke in 110+ degree weather; are they there because they love sleeping on cement so hot that it will scorch and sear flesh? You people, always lying to yourselves. The social welfare systems have all been gutted, the government doesn't care. Charities are flooded with people, they can't serve everyone. No one cares because of this myth that "people are there by choice" or that "they're just too lazy/unwilling to work" even though half of all homeless people are employed. Keep on spreading your lies, hurt your fellow man some more, whatever to make yourself feel better.

The truth is, no matter how many resources are available….a lot of these people would rather be on the street, than to be told what to do. Sitting in my subsidized unit now 2 years later and never have to worry about rent. Work any type of job I want. Really, working is the best thing you can do to stay sane in interim. Half the drama I would miss because I was at work. Staff was never on my ass over anything because I was at work. When sht got too crazy, I'd ditch the place and get a motel. There's no rent at a shelter so I went out to eat breakfast at a restaurant every day I had off. I was first in line for affordable housing too because I was working. Would recommend it to anyone trying to get tf out of this mind crushing rat race to pay rent nobody can actually afford.

You can criminalize homelessness and pay for people to be in jail/prison at $50k+ per person, or you could find cheap housing for them at $20k per person, or you can let them camp in these places and pay for police, EMS and other city workers to deal with them. We had a woman have 107 visits to just our ER in a year, which is over $100k easy, and that dropped to less than ten visits a year when they found her a social worker to provide psych and pain meds, and she was moved to cheap housing like a converted motel.

Options are limited to availability and social workers will try pressuring people into the first opening, which is almost always the worst opening. That's because bad shelters are revolving doors. I regret taking the first opening at Covenant House. Absolutely a waste of my time and detriment to my health. The next time around they tried pressuring me into Salvation Army and I was like NO. we can stop stealing from the workers. anything less than worker ownership of the means of production is a form of slavery. by stealing from the workers we break workers down till they become homeless. the vast majority of discovery level research responsible for our medical innovation is funded by our taxes. these discoveries are then privatized to the pharma companies which then sell us back our products at highly inflated middleman rates. m4a would save us 450 billion a year on better health outcomes by nationalizing the pharma industry thus eliminating the middleman rates. universal healthcare systems produce better health outcomes and m4a is the most universal system. we allow pharma companies to steal from us which eventually deteriorates people mental state leading to homelessness. homelessness is a made up issue. we can literally save money by housing them.

I think a glaring issue with the PHV or public housing voucher which is how people become placed in project buildings, is, the recipient can never move after being placed. In more recent years social agencies have stopped or at least really slowed down on the PHV. HCV or commonly known as Section 8 is the standard now. Problem with it is the prevailing bias against voucher holders, and the government's unwillingness to acknowledge it. We've taken a big step with source of income laws being implemented in some states, but, those laws still have loopholes which biased landlords will exploit. It's hard asf to get the voucher, even harder to actually use it. Worth it in the end though. My landlord gets near 2k for 400 square feet, and I pay 30% of what I earn. He gets his rent paid on time guaranteed and I get a place to live guaranteed in return. Great deal for the both of us. Most landlords would still rather bleed money from renting to non voucher holders who always fall behind on the rent or let the units collect dust until they sell their complex before they would rent to a voucher holder. It's a shame but it's not a sustainable model, eventually they'll fold under the pressure or government will take over the abandoned rentals. I get a place to live either way.

I am seeing some older motels being bought out by the city and turned into temp housing for the homeless. Saw one in West Hollywood on Santa Monica Blvd. I guess it’s better than leaving them on the streets to die. Even though it’s still a big gamble to do this.

My sister stays in one. Been there for 3 years and is very comfortable not working and getting free housing. Got a whole kitchenette . I think it should be some type of work program to go along with free housing. People like my sister who is not disabled and able to work but just lazy shouldn’t get free housing. They’re also about to move her to an apartment and pay up the rent for a year. Why? just because she’s lazy and taking advantage of the system.

So she was asked to leave and my other sister offered to get her a hotel but the catch was she had to eventually get a job to pay for it herself. Well my non druggie sister paid for half the month for my druggie sister and when it came time to pay for the second month, my druggie sister wouldnt even answer my other sister! So my other sister cancled the hotel, the staff locked the door and my druggie sister immediately attacked my other sister who tried to help her. My other sister told her to get a job and be present when she pays for her hotel, she never got a job and didnt even answer the day the hotel rent was owed. So now she is on the street again. They had a running tendency to ruin things for every body in the shelter. Alcoholics, people using H, had the tendency to keep to themselves. Great quality to have when you are institutionalized. Meth users were the total opposite. I think these programs would be A LOT more successful if certain groups of people were separated from each other. Having exited shelter myself. Let’s start with one: the Refresh Spot in DTLA that provides showers and towels with toiletries EVERYDAY! I’m lucky I live in my car and have a safe place to park, another service. Recently, the City cleaned up Venice & Figueroa Downtown and 3 hours later, the azz came right back by the Convention Center. Notwithstanding, there are food pantry and meals everyday, counseling, transportation, job placement, housing, free laundry, etc. EXCUSES are all I see! In 2020-2021, the SEC qualified my company as a RegA+ Tier II to raise up to $50 million for Gilmore Homes, Apartments, Shopping Centers, etc., for development. THEN, Covid-19 hit and devastated my company and its fundraising. I had two choices: spend my $12,000 to renew my lease in Atlanta or move to Los Angeles. I moved to LA and relocated my business. Then, when my company couldn’t get Venture Capital to build small homes, I had to sacrifice paying $1,500 plus for an apartment or saving $1,500. I chose the latter and now I have the seed capital to build my 1st 599 sf home to market in CA & around the U.S. My homelessness was based on finances (saving the money I need to grow my business). Being in my car over 2 years, I have succeeded my goal. With my high credit scores and income, I qualify for an apartment, but I don’t want one. Eventually, I will have to get one because I take care of my elderly Jewish boss, which the State of California trying to force a Conservatorship (see my videos). Anyways, I could go on and on and I thank God I have 5 college degrees to fall back on (a good job if I need one). Right now, I’m happy running my boss’s company in Beverly Hills juxtaposed my businesses while homeless living in my Mercedes. I’m so content. I’ve been arrogant all my life. Some are homeless because the rent in CA is so ridiculous they cannot afford to live anywhere even with multiple jobs. There are so many people who had to move-in with other families just to survive. Not everyone has that option. There are also a lot of people with mental health issues who are paranoid that the help being offered is a plot against them. The people that should be prosecuted are the squatters who have sound mind & are illegally taking over someone's home even though they have money, etc.

I am formerly homeless and 100% agree on this. In 10 years of chronic homelessness I never once pitched a tent. I did at times rough sleep in parks, always showed up after sun down and left at sunrise. I was meticulous about clearing any trash I had so that my presence would not be noticed. Like they say about camping, Leave no trace. It's just the decent thing to do. I believe strongly in karma so even when I had nothing I tried to be good to the world I was living in. Even if that world was not good to me. I did leave some water on the floor of some public bathrooms and had to pee outside plenty of times. I wasn't perfect, but sht I tried. It makes me angry and sad to see encampments. Angry because it's disrespectful to the people we share this earth with. Sad because for a homeless person, the cessation of movement is akin to a death rattle. We must continue to move or else we will die. So pitching a tent is saying, "I have accepted death here."

My ex girlfriend is among them. I tried to help her years ago to get a job,to make money. But nope. She wanted to do drugs and buy video games. Last I heard she went to LA and I called her to tell her how stupid and foolish she is doing that. She fucked up her life and no amount of talking would convince her.

Where is this Motel/temp housing? I have a feeling they are just going to camp elsewhere…. Many of these people aren’t just willing to take housing given to them…. Especially if they have a curfew or can’t do drugs as part of the housing agreement

They are being put up in most of the motels down the street from there,on Sepulveda.

Due to health issues I have been homeless, so I can comment on this. This camp will just reappear somewhere else. Most homeless want to be homeless. No rules, responsibilities, you do drugs all day.

Can I have a free hotel room?! Oh no, of course not, I'm a tax paying citizen who made all the right choices and worked hard, so I get to pay for other peoples permanent vacation.

AND they still have the nerve to only stay a couple weeks because "I don't like that I can't leave after 2am because of curfew!" WTF.
