18 years old, driving the family station wagon, this song comes on the radio. I did a U-turn across double lanes of traffic, raced to the record store, parked illegally, ran in shouting "Born to Run, it's called Born to Run!" The record store guy just pointed to a rack. Bought it with the only $7 I had for the week, raced back home, put it on my portable player. My little brother bounced into my room within 10 seconds. "Who IS this?!" So many great concerts since then. The album I bought that day is framed and has been on some wall of every house I've lived in ever since. For me, this song was life-changing.

@@kierstenridgway4634 lol, I had no choice. That song had the same instantaneous effect on him it had on me. Fast forward many shows and many years later, and here's email from a summer about 10 years ago (or so)... Him: Hey Bruce is playing two nights in Phoenix. Dad would give us some Marriott points. And [name of fellow Bruce tramp] can get us on the TPC course. We could golf in the day, see Bruce that night, and do it all over again the next day. Me: Jeez, it must be 110 degrees there right now. Him: 113, I just checked. Needless to say, we hopped on a cheap flight from Midwest to Phoenix and did exactly what he had proposed. :-) Best.trip.ever.

My Mom - now 82 - sat next to Clarence Clemons on an airplane. He was so charmed by her, he got her phone number and would call her from time to time. anytime they came anywhere near Columbia SC , he would call and ask her if she wanted tickets. This was pre cell phones, so it was always weird to hear his voice on our answering machine. Got to see Bruce - AND CLARENCE - several times.❤❤❤❤

I saw Bruce in Minnesota 1984 when he pulled, not randomly, Courtney Cox from the audience to film the "Dancing in the Dark" video. It was a great year for concerts. I was fortunate to have seen The Clash, Bruce Springsteen, Yes, Blue Oyster Cult and, King Crimson at First Avenue. I was 22 years old. Wow. Great memories.

That sax was powered out by Clarence Clemons, longtime E Street Band member. He was in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, playing one of the Three Coolest People In The Universe (along with Martha Davis and Fee Waybill). Bruce is the American Bard, our Shakespeare, writing and singing odes to the ordinary person, the workers, the high school kids, the mechanics, the lovers. His song "Thunder Road" is hands-down the most romantic song I've ever heard. He is and always will be the best at capturing what this country is really all about.

All the other comments are giving lists of the BIG anthems, and they are GREAT! But at some point, try this: watch a documentary or two about 9/11, and then listen to Springsteen's album "The Rising". No one seems to talk much about this album now, but it came out less than a year after that terrible day - and the music on it helped those who heard it acknowledge everything we lost that day, and celebrate those who lived, those who helped, those who realized that we are all Americans, and that we had not been defeated. It's not BIG songs - it's what's in the songs that is enormous - music of the human spirit. Art!
