Blended specifically means it has juice from multiple spirit types. Blending batches from the same distillery has never been called “blended”. If that were the case everything not single barrel would be called blended. So even though they are mixing juice from different types of barrel sizes/chars doesn’t make it a blended product.
@davidmeier18114 ай бұрын
The wording regarding "blended" is not what you stated. This is the definition of "Blended whisky -Whisky produced by blending not less than 20% on a proof gallon basis (excluding alcohol derived from added harmless coloring, flavoring or blending materials*) straight whisky or a blend of straight whiskies and, separately or in combination, whisky of any type or neutral spirits. So that means only 20% of what is in the bottle needs to be whisky and the rest could be vodka. Blended Bourbon Whisky states: Blended whisky produced in the U.S. containing not less than 51% on a proof gallon basis (excluding alcohol derived from added harmless coloring, flavoring or blending materials*) straight bourbon whisky. So it has at least 51% straight bourbon. Blended does not indicate it came from different distilleries. "A blend of straight whiskies" CAN indicate different states. The definitions for whisky are confusing. Because blended whiskey is sub-par the industry does not use the term blended when mixing barrels. The industry term is "co-mingling"

@@davidmeier1811Thx, didn't see your correction, but already posted something similar to that.. Makes me think of the "Travellers", which most reviews (all) I've seen failed to point out that it is a "blended whiskey" and only needs to contain 20% straight whiskey & as you said, the rest can be grain neutral spirits, such as vodka, moonshine, coloring, flavoring, water, etc.

Balcones Distilling's stuff has made me a fan of blue corn. When they were still making Texas Pot Still Bourbon one of the four grains in the mash bill was roasted Texas blue corn, and the mash bill for Balcones' corn whisky is 100% roasted Texas blue corn. And that stuff is *fine* whisky.

One of the benefits of higher proof whiskey is that you have the option of adding a couple drops of water if you want...low proof, you can't add proof....so if 130+ is too high for you, or for that particular bottle it seems too high, you should add a couple of drops after trying it neat to see if doing so makes it better or what kind of things come out if you do so, I think it would add to the review quite a bit because that's one of the big pluses for higher proof stuff, a couple drops or 10 can really play with the flavors and options and should be considered, imho. Even if you do like it neat, i still think these higher proof options should get a couple drops at the end, just for science....and i'm not even one that typically adds water, but would still be interesting.

Straight Whiskey = minimum 2yr age to be called straight. Blended Whiskey = a blend of different types of whiskey. If its 3 barrels from same place then its just small batch. If its a blend of single malt, corn whiskey, and rye whiskey then its a blended whiskey. I'm reading that it also has to do with different mash bills. Think Travelers whiskey - blended whiskey. Bardstown Bourbon does a lot of blended whiskey.

Straight means at least two years. Blended can still say straight I believe if all the blends are from the same state. Don't quote me, not certain. But I do remember K. Luke's bottle says "Blended Straight Bourbon Whiskeys" so... maybe they must specify the blend? Not sure on that also. I don't believe this is a blend however. This is more of a "small batch". Blends involve different mash bill barrels. Usually a small batch involves multiple barrels from the same mash bill, usually same distilling season.

I think there is a lot of fishiness about this brand. It didn’t exist in May. They keep adding more information and people are being skeptical. It reminds me of 13th colony double oak. 53 & 30 gallon barrel wreaks of double barreling to squeeze age and flavor It took over month of sitting for my bottle to be more than just ethanol. The influencer that anointed this values a long finish and that is its only saving grace. I also question the ethics of that competition.

I know you aren’t really close to a Total Wine store, but if you ever get a chance, I would love to see a review on some of their store brand bourbons. They do a similar thing as Costco and have contract distillers bottle some of their items. Barton is a big one and another is called the JWP Group. Bourbon guys are always beating up on some of these products, but some are really legit good if you give them a chance. Specific ones would be Chestnut Farms. It’s a 90 proof Barton product retailing around $65. Another is Wolcott Rickhouse Reserve. It retails around $45. Another would be Old Emmer Cask Strength. It’s wheated and retails just under $50. They also have a line of products called Bondstone. They do a regular 90 proof, a double oak, a toasted barrel and a cask strength.
