You said a lot of words but never explained what the secret of drumming is binary three bar cycle phrases, but what are the phrases? I’m not sure if this was just a tease to take your course. I’m not sure if you were being honest because you never said what the secret was a three bar phrase, but what three bar phrase.? and how is it counted?

I remember when I was 18, I did a paper on Math in Music before graduating High School. I remember reflecting on all the possibilities of permutation etc. It was and is still intimidating to fully realize the coordination and sound that is our potential.

So drumming isn't about having 5 bass drums, twelve toms, 53 cymbals, and assorted percussion items here & there? Phil your videos are right on the mark. I don't see how any dedicated drummer can feel fulfilled as a musician, playing the same old beats, fills, and licks as it gets old very quickly. I was blown away when you showed the infinite possibilities with just a small drum kit & the knowledge of the 3 bar cycle! Thanks Phil you saved me a ton of money now that I'm happy with my 5 piece kit! :)

@@philmaturanodrums You know Phil I don't think it's your fault, many are brainwashed by the music industry, both the music scene & the companies trying to sell you more & more equipment that you don't really need. Also the truth doesn't look cool or sexy, but a new kit that looks like a piece of fine furniture for $$$$, and a drum lessons web site where you can take lessons from your favorite rock/pop drummer, who knows what my first drum teacher taught me when I was 14. Now that seems like a good deal to the ignorant & the foolish. If drumming is a spiritual journey, then maybe they aren't very spiritual and need to learn some things. I'm still just a student on the pathway of discovery, the joy of learning new things is still my top value!

@@johnmckenna1776 It could be that guys like you and the cats on my site are rare birds. In fact the ones that are truly interested in learning because of the beauty of drumming are becoming less and less. Because of the reasons you stated above.

@@philmaturanodrums Yes 100% agree! It's like separation of the wheat from the chaff. When you pay the dues that you have paid Phil, there is a great reward for your diligence, but so many have no patience & they want to play like you in 5 months of some nonsense. Yes we may be rare but in a world of 7 billion people, there are more of us than you might think!

Your knowledge and playing are exemplary. I wish this video spent more time on the actual concept vs the fact that it's important. The rapid, brief initial explanation on the marker board would have been more helpful slowed and broken down. The majority of the video certainly stressed that it's important. Just wanted to spend that time working on the concept itself. I've watched other videos of yours and am very impressed by your skills from years of study, practice, and playing with Maynard, etc. Great respect for all you have to offer us!

Hi John! Thank you for writing. I really appreciate the kind words. On the issue of diving deeper into the actual use. I have lots of videos about this on youtube. For example....kzbin.info/www/bejne/anjdaa2OjKuBjJI - The full methods are available on my lessons site. The issue is that it's a very deep subject and one that takes many many videos and etc to explain fully. One of the biggest challenges on my end is simply creating an awareness that this even exists! Believe it or not. This information has been squashed down so much by the "industry" that most musicians wanting to learn are totally disconnected from rhythm. It's disturbing. So part of the task is to draw people in and inspire the pursuit of this knowledge. Hope that makes sense :-) Many greetings to you.

@@philmaturanodrums Thanks, Phil. I'll check out the video, and find your playing and skills of the highest caliber. Your work with Maynard is nothing short of tastefully explosive and amazing. I played in a band with an alto player from Maynard's earlier band. Having attended a workshop when Randy Jones was in your seat, I found Maynard an incredibly humble and amazing person. Again, thanks for your response. How I wish big bands were still as popular as earlier, so I could come and hear guys like you play!
