You been making me pick up my guitar more the last year than in the last 10. I once had a few nice ones that I sold to get myself out of some bad situations during my active prescription addictions. One a Gibson hummingbird pro. The other an old original Alverez acoustic. And my uncles 80s-90s red electric with the Floyd rose. And whammy. I feel you have some deeper story to share as well. Makes me tune in. Thanks for being you my friend.

One of my favs to cover as a two guitar band. The way they blend very, very simple melodic lines together to make it sound full, really is a master class in how to write two guitar songs. It also has a lot of fun movement while never having a traditional guitar solo. These guys really moved pop-rock forward. And as a bonus, most crowds dig it.

Killer song. Even the radio version does a great job of creating a live feel/energy and they do a nice job of building the tension. I wouldnt say its a “Great” guitar riff. Im always drawn more to the vocals as the real hook in this song. Riff is perfect for the song though. I tend to think of truly great riffs as riffs that dont even need the vocal! But thats just me. From this era something like Seven Nation Army would fall into that category for me. Still I always love when this song comes on!

Some of this feel comes from a early 70's band called Man(from Wales - listen to Spunk Rock live and you will see what I mean). Just with the punk attitude. It really grooves well. ( We grooved a little more laid back in the early 70's hehehe). Terry Williams was the drummer back then, who went onto to play for Dire Straits.

“The biggest songs are singalongs. Everybody wants to sing and dance.” Word. Not enough bands today get this. It’s what makes for great music in any genre. Songs have to have grooves and hooks. Which is why so many bands, from the death metal mic-cupping screamers, to the non-musical nonsense of Mars Volta will be forgotten within 10 years, while others from Van Halen, to AC/DC, to Michael Jackson, to Journey, to Metallica, to Madonna, Prince, Bowie, ZZ Top, Sam Cooke, The Beach Boys, heck, even Meatloaf, etc, etc etc will still be remembered, played and loved.

Franz Ferdinand is like the band that sounds like the 80's and 90's. You can't name the riffs they are stealing because they change them slightly, but you remember the riffs. It's like, maybe The Cure and a handful of other bands. But they're good enough that you can't put your finger on the riff they're stealing.

Thats kinda the point isn't it. I am sure this guy has wrote 'more interesting' or 'more technical' riffs than this, and I am sure he is a better guitarist and all, but at the end of the day, this is the one people remember. Unless of course Mariosangermano has been moonlighting as a highly succesful pop artist. The truth is quality is super subjective, but if the idea of a riff is to grab you, it is really hard to downplay just how 'effective' this riff has been. It is known everywhere.@@szabolcsmurath
