I used to work just outside Matlock and the security in place was so ridiculous for such a remote business. From what I recall Matlock has a very high rate of sexual assault and violence which I've experience several times at work and driving through the town. I do find it a little amusing that residents of the town don't think it's bad but then again it's the same with Clay Cross and Alfreton which have a higher crime rate than Matlock although Alfreton has double the population if I remember correctly.

Alfreton's smaller than Matlock if you don't count the surrounding villages as a lot of people do. Its not much bigger than Wirksworth!

I can tell you 100% that Matlock is not dangerous. Plenty of happy locals, tourists holiday lets and second homes. It was a lovely place to grow up. Does have a lot of charity shops though.
