The Porsche 917/30 biturbo boxer engine of 5,374 cubic centimeters yielded 1,580 horsepower with the two turbos running at 2.7 bar pressure. This added to its weight of just 820 kilograms makes its weight / power ratio of 1,967 horses per ton. The problem with this huge engine was that it could only roll with the turbos running to the maximum in classification, having to reduce the power to 1,100 horses and 7,800 revolutions per minute in the race to keep it. The estimated maximum speed was 400km / h while the acceleration from 0 to 100 was barely two seconds. The most incredible fact is that the car reached 320 km / h in just over 13 seconds.

In the spring of 1972, Mark Donohue, the Penske team's primary driver, had flipped his Porsche 917/10 over backward coming over a sharp rise on Road Atlanta's back 'straight'. His leg was broken and he was out for the season. So he went to Weissach, Porsche's R&D facility, and dedicated himself to the development of the new 917/30, which was to be run by Penske in the 1973 Can-Am championship. These circumstances allowed him to spend many months on the project. Now, the 1972 Porsche 917/10 was already a monster. With its big turbo 12-cylinder engine making something like 900 HP in a state-of-the-art chassis, it vanquished the previously unbeatable McLarens, ending their five year domination of the series. Knowing that their ~750 HP aluminum big-block Chevrolet engines were outclassed, McLaren did not return for 1973. The aluminum Chevy was a simple, readily available, normally aspirated bargain of a race engine that was already stretched to its limits. And Porsche's budget and in-house resources dwarfed anything the Kiwis could muster. But the mighty 917/30 was far more advanced even than the 917/10, and had its remaining Can-Am competitors in an absolutely inescapable death grip during the 1973 season. Truthfully, Porsche could have quite comfortably dominated Can-Am in 1973 once again, using the 1972 car. The almost unbelievable 917/30, combined with the Arab oil embargo of 1973 (Arab oil-producing nations, led by the Saudis, cut off oil shipments to the U.S. in retaliation for its support of Israel during that year's Arab-Israeli war) effectively ended the glory days of the original Can-Am. No other manufacturer was prepared to commit its resources to challenging Porsche's wunderkar for 1974 and beyond, in that very depressed and uncertain economic climate. Porsche subsequently withdrew as well, choosing not to return for 1974. The Can-Am series was dramatically overhauled to reduce costs. But the Turbo Panzers had already ushered in the 'turbo era' of road racing. This was an extremely sophisticated race car, in every way allowed by the rules of the time. The complicated turbo engine technology was a major milestone in racing history. Jim Hall's high-wing Chaparrals of 1966-1968 were arguably more sophisticated aerodynamically. But suspension-mounted, driver-adjustable wings were banned after 1968 so Porsche was limited by the rules in that regard. Still the 917/30's aero design was absolutely cutting edge within the regulations. The car would have been impossible to drive, otherwise. Tires and brakes also had to be improved just to cope with its performance envelope. I believe I'm correct in saying that the 917/30's engine is still the most powerful racing engine ever approved for an FIA-sanctioned circuit racing series. Can-Am cars were the ultimate race cars of their time, far quicker than even F1 cars, and the 917/30 was the ultimate Can-am car.
@sp1nrx

I really doubt that many reading these comments were around during the height of the Can-Am series. The cars, except for the occasional Ferrari or 3 liter Porsches racing in the series, literally shook the ground as they idled. The monster 7+ liter normally aspirated engines were monsters already. Then Porsche came along and did the "hold my beer" thing. For those who weren't there, you just had to be around these monsters to appreciate them. They really did shake the ground. The open thinking and unlimited engine rules was both the reason for success and failure of the Can-Am series.

The Chaparral 2J was the most forward thinking and innovative Can Am car, but such engineering novelties of creativity get banned by the conventialists
@Michael_Lorenson
@Michael_Lorenson 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheSilverShadow17 Yes, well I chose to skip over that because my previous post was already very long, and because the 2J employed a radical and controversial new aero concept. So I mentioned Hall's previous revolutionary, and ultimately banned, wing-based aerodynamics (used on the 2E/2F/2G cars) briefly and moved on. I thought it was a more appropriate comparison, because Halls wings revolutionized racing, and they were the concept that led to the aero design of the 917/30. The 2J was quickly banned and became a footnote in racing history. The 2J was a 'fan car', like the later, Gordon Murray designed Brabham F1 car. These two cars each had a large fan which, combined with skirts to help seal the car's underside to the ground, made tremendous downforce, even at low speed. Each was almost immediately banned on the grounds that the fan constituted a 'movable aerodynamic device'. In both cases, this was in response to protests from other teams. Jim Hall had actually presented the concept to Can-Am series tech officials before the 1970 season began, and received approval to use it. When the season did begin, it was immediately obvious the car was far quicker than any competitor, including McLaren. Chaparral ran it in the first two races, but it failed to finish either. There were protests from McLaren and other teams, and it was banned after the second race. Jim Hall was so disgusted that he promptly quit Can-Am forever. The Brabham F1 car showed up at the first race of the season (either '77 or '78, I can't remember), not having been shown to anyone prior. Murray claimed the fan was for 'cooling'. Unlike the Chaparral 2J, which had a separate (small, two-stroke) engine driving its fan, the Brabham's fan took power from the main engine, IIRC. Anyway, nobody bought the notion that this giant fan, sticking out the back of the car, was for cooling. Mario Andretti (Lotus) claimed it threw so much debris, stones and such, out the back that it was dangerous to follow. Bernie Ecclestone owned the Brabham team, and was also in the process of establishing the influence of the Formula One Constructor's Association (FOCA), at the time. After much political wrangling before the race, it was agreed that the car would be allowed to compete this once, then be banned thereafter. It's pretty clear that he made a strategic decision to relent and sacrifice his team's competitiveness for that season, in order to maintain political harmony within FOCA. Not long after, he sold Brabham to concentrate solely on FOCA.
@TheSilverShadow17
@TheSilverShadow17 4 жыл бұрын
@@Michael_Lorenson The competitor race teams were 'jealous' of the Chapparal and the Brabham because the 2 cehicles were excercising the concept of how much safer the Fan Cars are in reality compared to cars that don't have giant fans attached to them.

The Porsche 962 in the mid eighties had a spool diff too. They managed to set up the car well enough as to not get too much understeer if equipped with the right tires.

We need to bring back Can Am, or at least a formula like it. Imagine what technology would be developed, so that in 40 years everyone would be like "the cars were so powerful they use X instead of Y". You won't find that in F1, not nowadays anyway. 20 years ago for sure radical innovation in F1 was a thing, but not anymore. The rulebook has gotten so thick and restrictive the only innovations are in new ways to cheat the rules with old technology

Yeah this makes me suspicious... on more open GP tracks (which would suit the Can-Am car more), this car in quali trim was roughly the same speed as a top F1 car. I can't see it being 18 seconds quicker at this track. Anyone got a theory on what causes the difference in this case?
@Vamppas
@Vamppas 5 жыл бұрын
@@scottmichaels6624 Difference comes from the insane straight line acceleration & speed. What it loses in corners it takes back on the fast flowing sections and straights. This track has quite a lot of long & fast sections and straights. In 3:55 jimmer brakes at 310km/h, with ferrari in the same spot he brakes at 250km/h. Alone In the long straight (döttinger höhe) this thing also wins a good amount of time being + 80km/h faster most of the time. So this actually is perfect track profile for this thing against slower opponent that corners better. On your average GP track this insane straight line speed is not as huge advantage since they usually much less/shorter high speed sections. Pretty simple when u think about it.

Willi Kauhsen took then federal president Gustav Heinemann (highest ranked person in the German government) for a lap in "his" 917/10 back in 1973 on the Nordschleife. It was spring, but snowy. SO in jumped Heinemann, with a spare Helmet from Kauhsen, no real seat, no seatbelt, no roof, holding on to dear life while only wearing his black suit. Kauhsen took it easy ("We went to the limiter in 3rd on the Döttinger Höhe - how fast was that? - er, still real slow, just shy of 260kph"). When they went through Brünnchen, the Secret Service Opel Blitz truck they sent out before had slid into the ditch, making Kauhsen spin the car. The federal president just gave a thumbs up and had the time of his life. When they returned to the pits, Heinemann wanted to go again but the Secret Service said to Kauhsen they'd arrest him if he even thought of starting the beast again :D Just imagine, most powerful man in Germany sitting in the fastest car in the world, 1100hp of brute power, on the most dangerous track in the world, in the cold, partial snow on the ground, in his black suit without a seatbelt, only a rollbar to hold on to. Mark Donahue drove this car. He said something like. As a driver you always want more power but being in a car that lays black lines from the exit of one corner to the braking zone of the next might have enough.

It's incredible how far along we have progressed in motorsports. Porsche's 919 EVO also has around 1200hp, but the laptimes between that and this is way bigger than what it should've been, at least on paper

Mark Donahue took one of these to Talledega Super Speedway (the longest fastest oval track in the world) and set a closed course world record speed 221 M/PH (he hit 241 M/PH at the end of the straightaways) which stood for decades. Incidentally Bill Elliot set an official lap record speed of 212 M/PH during qualifying for the 1986 Taledega 500 ( a record which still stands to this day) and then came back from being 2 laps down to win the race setting another speed record of 208 M/PH and making series history by becoming the first driver to achieve that feat while under green flag conditions..

Dude, You should try the H2R in Ride3 Should be fun to watch you try to handle 326 bhp for 194kgs on a vehicle you're not used to! (Or even more, if you max it out in the game) (I did a 06:24 lap with some big mistakes with that bike, so I need to go back to it. But that should give you an idea of how insane it is. It's basically this car but on 2 wheels)

I came here after I tried it out in AC. The first time I went full throttle I hit a wall to my right. After I knew what was going on I actually didn't spin it another time. After a few laps I even played with that grip limit and found it quite entertaining to lose your back ever so slightly before catching it again. In my opinion this Porsche 917/30 is way easier to control than the The Ferrari F40 on 90's Tires, which I spin all the time.

These laps are so much fun to watch! I'm still hoping for a comparrison video where you test a car with what you think is the best setup for a track, put a time in, and then set up the car to be as terrible as you can, and then do a lap to see how close you can get to the good setup!

"Powered by the Type 912 flat-12 engine of 4.5, 4.9, or 5 litres, the 917/30 Can-Am variant was capable of a 0-62 mph (100 km/h) time of 2.3 seconds, 0-124 mph (200 km/h) in 5.3 seconds, and a test track top speed of up to 240 mph (390 km/h)," according to Wiki. Compare this to the Bugatti Chiron with its 8 litre W18 producing 1500hp with all the bells and whistles a 2019 car can muster, including four wheel drive, 0=97km/h (60 mph) in 2.4 seconds, 0-200 km/h in 6.5 seconds and ultimately topping out at 289 mph or 465km/h. For a 47 year old car the Porche is an insane piece of kit! Congrats to Jimmy for keeping it on the track!

As crazy as this is, what's crazier is that, thanks to Interserie, these cars actually raced on the Nordschleife in period, along with some other Group 7 beasts and some hotted-up Group 6 screamers. As tough as the Porsche 917/30 is to handle, I'd imagine a McLaren M8F Turbo or M20 Turbo would be even more difficult to keep on the road.

In the year Porsche introduced the 917, they didn't race it on the Nordschleife, they used the more nimble and more driveable 908 for the 1000KM of the Nurburgring that Year. Their logic was that they developed the 917 for the long straights in LeMans.

There is only one other CAN-AM car that I know about, featuring in Gran Turismo and it is the same type of car as one you've already lapped the Nordschleiffe in! It is the Chapparel 2D, basically a fridge... with a turbine sticking out the back! Yep! It's a fan car! Same as the X2010 and X2011! And X2014 Fan Car! Yeah, there's another two of those things and the X2010 is the tame one! Well, "tameR"...

They rarely used this car at full boost in CanAm racing. Despite the crazy power,no one actually died in one. They call it the car that killed CanAm, but that was because fans wanted competitive racing in the 70s, they would not tolerate F1 the way it is today. Jimmy should try the same era McLaren.

Porsche also had a Flat 16 twin turbo version of this car in development for CANAM as well, but, they had aero issues with it so it never actually raced. With a couple more years of CANAM it probably would have seen a track.
