I have the same portaband, same clamp, same blades for all the reasons you mentioned. No foot pedal yet, but it all works great for me.

What's that saying; Great minds think alike? hahaha. Yeah, a foot pedal definitely isn't necessary, and it isn't the best way to do it for everyone.
