Are they definitely manhole drain covers we are seeing? I thought they were when I first saw them but on a second look I'm not certain they are drain covers. Repaired Tarmac patches ,maybe?

Yep, they’re manhole covers. This year they reportedly applied some kind of abrasive coating like a course sand paper-type cover to allow for some kind of grip. Particularly bad from metropole to black hill. Lots on the race line. Amazing rider feel and skills, nevermind bravery.
