I would have to disagree. His fear was airplanes or heights and I think he was telling the truth. When people are scared of airplanes, normally it’s because they are afraid to crash land in the ocean and become stranded. The white box where they must kill each other shows the inside of the airplane, his fear. To die in spleef, you have to fall, or crash land. And the obsidian platform where Rek got out is high in the air to represent his fear of heights. The birds are there because they live near the ocean and fly which goes to his fear of heights and flying.

I knew it was Dev due to the fact that the cage was high up in the sky and he said his fear was airplanes and high up places, also I am guessing the ocean was either a red herring, or because people that have a fear of airplanes usually hate flying because they are scared they would crash over and ocean and be lost at sea, and the deepness and the anglerfish was there to instigate the fear of being lost at sea, therefore making an educated guess it was Dev.
