The name that got kicked to the curb is Don Felder. The level of ingratitude coming from Frey ( RIP ) and Henley is monumental. Eagles would never have become who they are without Felder's influence. That band was a puzzle that was far greater than the sum of it's pieces.

Meisner too. He sang the high harmonies on most of the biggest hits. Now, if he and Joe were major alcoholics and hard drug addicts, that is a problem.

Definitely a bad attitude from Don H and Frey toward Don Felder. Hotel California would never have happened without him.

Watching the documentary several years ago made me sad with how they treated Don Felder. I think there was some serious jealousy there because Joe Walsh was the only other bandmember that could be considered an equal as a player.
@Better_Call_Raul

Let's not get carried away. Up until 1994, Felder was receiving an equal share of the band's profits. Quite generous of Henley and Fry to do that. "According to Don Felder, Henley and Frey wanted a higher percentage of the band’s profits after the 1994 Hell Freezes Over tour. Before that, they split the money they made into five equal portions. Moreover, Felder argued in his lawsuit that Henley and Frey’s greed became more insatiable with each new musical project." Felder was clearly not on the level of Henley and Frey in terms of writing and singing. Henley and Frey had a very strong case that they should receive a larger share than Henley. I see no problem with it at all. An equal share for a guy that wrote *three* songs in total (Hotel California, Victim Of Love and Those Shoes) is simply not justified.

Exactly. Henley and Frey's obvious jealousy and need for total control of everything is legendary. They were never happy with a band that was a collective of talents they had to share. Epic assholes, both of them.

Journey of the Sorcerer is one of my favorite songs. I didn't realize it was an Eagles song until the 21st Century, instead I was introduced to it from the BBC's production of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. When I discovered it was the Eagles I was delighted and somewhat confused that it was hidden under their other songs. Now I learn that Glen and Don didn't like it, such misguided egos. For me, the Eagles ended in 1980. Now they are just Vultures. 😂

"One Of These Nights" was the second CD I ever bought in 1984 at Best(big warehouse store with a whole corner block that came out on a track and then closed up after-hours). I don't know if it was that really cool, sardonically suggestive picture of the guys on the inner sleeve, the dark grey and blue-lit post-Southwest LP cover, the title track, or songs like "Too Many Hands". But there's something very sneakily dark and gritty in this album, which even permeates the "happier" songs like "Best Of My Love", "Visions"(one of the best Southern rock tracks ever made by a non-southern band, imo), and "Take It To The Limit". Even in major note-dominant, purposely obsolete and cliche-riddled "story" tracks like "Hollywood Waltz", there's an undeniable and inextricable melancholy and unresolved bittersweet despair with no predictable happy Hollywood ending for the song's characters, that really stays with you. The bouncy waltz beat and string arrangements are as much of a puzzle distraction to be worked through in getting to that thematic goal, as they are a purposeful delivery system for it. Of course later in their career on the "The Long Run" LP they got even darker, dirtier and seedier with tunes like "Teenage Jail", "King Of Hollywood" and "Disco Strangler". So I guess it's no accident that the entire "OOTN" LP and those select tracks from "TLR", are my official Eagles desert Island tracks that I could listen to every damn day and not get tired of them. The larger lesson this album taught me(then at 11 years old): Bands can have songs on the radio that women sway their heads to buzzed off California Coolers in a Denny's Lounge, blue-collar guys pump their fist to during the obligatory famous harmonizing guitar solo, or workaday cubicle jockeys quietly sing along to over the office Muzak system. But, if you manage to acquire the keys to the band's covert inner workings through a deeper inquisitiveness, willingness to set aside the popular and almost seeking to be mentally-distressed by osmosis once you discover that no matter what your parents, friends, teachers or clergy tell you: There are just some dark, soul-twisting and irredeemably sad and sinister cul-de-sacs and cobweb-decorated despaired and deathly rooms, that we all will(and should) face in life. I will always hold "One Of These Nights" and the Eagles in the highest regard, for teaching me that lesson so effectively and appreciably before Dio, CandleMass, Ministry, Ultravox and other similar musical influences did or ever could.

With respect to ALL. I was fortunate enough to see The Eagles AND Little River band share a stage (Yale Bowl 1980). Who was the better band? (I'll stir it up..but....I have to be honest) LRB had better vocals, and clearly were having a better day. The Eagles seemed disinterested, and seemed to avoid each others glare. It didnt suprise me when I heard they broke up not long after. The magic was gone. LRBs vocals live were steller. Eagles were in tune, but (intentionally?) equalized to sound thin (like the Long Run record sounded oddly thin). It was a long but interesting day at a show.

One Of These Nights may still be my absolute favorite of their albums. Knowing the material that was around (Randy Meisner's Country/Blues/Rock EPIC tome, "Darlin' Wait And See", and the Frey/Henley tune, "If You Need A Little More", for instance) and possible, it really could have been the double album they were trying to make, in 1978/79.

Journey of the Sorcerer may be my favourite rock instrumental of all time. Yes I say Rock, despite the banjo. I only knew it first as Theme Song for Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy, the original TV series. Then I realized it was on my sister's copy of One of These Nights. One of These Nights is their strongest album, hands down. It is more cohesive, creative, gorgeous sounding. Yes Hotel California is their pinnacle as a band and song, but you can't tell me the album of the same name is a better one. To me it sounds overall unhappy.

Boy I tell you there's little to no love for Don Felder in everything associated with the Eagles. Even in this video the one mention of him was halfway edited to where his whole name wasn't even fully pronounced! What in the everloving heck is going on here? He is a better guitarist than Joe Walsh, always has been and he always takes a back seat when it comes to the band! He WROTE the Hotel California guitar parts and it was even his idea that birthed the song! Not to mention his solo in One of These Nights is one of the greatest guitar tones and lead phrasing ever recorded! I'll never understand it.

Every molecule of grief within The Eagles came from one person: Glenn Frey. He was the catalyst for Bernie Leadon quitting, Randy Meisner quitting, Don Felder being fired for demanding to see the financial records of the business of which he owned an equal share. Glenn Frey was the least talented out of all the members of The Eagles, but his ego was the size of Alaska, thanks to an ounce of cocaine a week for 20 years, yet had the audacity to demand that Joe Walsh get sober before they would let him in on the "Hell Freezes Over" reunion. He was a world-class dick. It's only fitting that he died first.

If they would have offered Randy the same help with drugs and alcohol like they did Joe Walsh maybe it would have helped him. I mean Bernie dumped a bottle of beer over Glenn's head and Randy decked Glenn for shoving him and calling him a pu**y. Henley and Frey fired an equal partner Don Felder for wanting to see the books. Felder did not believe he was getting his fair share of money from the Hotel California and other songs he wrote the music too. Yep, Glenn was the one that started much of the fights. But yet he was a great song writer and singer.

Journey to the Sorceror reached legendary status once it was chosen as the theme tune to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy so for me the greatest of all the Eagles songs and what is even better is the main Eagles members didn’t even like it 🤣. When I listen to it it is synonymous first and foremost with Douglas Adams who made the original decision to use it for Hitchhikers and although the Eagles version was used for the original radio series it was re-recorded over the years by a number of composers for the TV series, the film and the newer radio series so I doubt many people even know it was originally by the Eagles anymore as the music since 1978 has been credited to the individual composers.

Did Don Henley's lawyer force you to delete Felder's name?

This is why I’m not a fan of John and the only reason why I’m here is to hear the great Bill Szymczyk.

Henry and Frey were not very nice, to be diplomatic. It's painful I think for fans who love these people to learn these things.

Felder thought he was being treated as nothing if he was being treated as less than Henley and Frey. That was the problem.

Sad that the members could be such dicks. I saw the original band live and this was before they were superstars. But was the fame and fortune worth the cold, twisted hearts that resulted from the greed?

Should ask Don Henley about Hotel California... And a contract I was forced to sign around 1974, when a guy also signed as my guardian since I was under age, making that contract null n void, since I lived with both my parents who were my only guardians . Who am I? I'm the composer !

Don Felder was the Golden goose for Glenn Frey and Don Henley that took them over the top and made them rock and roll mainstream, unfortunate that Bernie Leadon didn't like that direction and quit the band Eagles never would have hit superstardom without Don Felder , Glenn Frey claims Felder was never happy oh hell yeah you and Henley were constantly minimizing his contributions and dicking him around.

Bill is one of the producers that I used to look for when I bought albums because I always knew if they were produced by him they would be one of the best sounding albums I ever bought. Still holds true.
