One Old Auger, One New Tool

Salvaged parts, steel make new post hole digger. For less than $300, welder Joel Ort converted an old 3-point, PTO-driven post hole digger to a hydraulically powered digger mounted to the front of his Bobcat skid-steer loader.

To build mine has cost me $942 with a 6” auger, or $1102 including a 9” auger as well. But since I have a mini-skid steer, I had to spend an additional $250 on a motor that had enough torque to run on 11.2 gpm and wouldn’t stall on big rocks. The motor mounted on the gearbox produces about 850ft-lb torque at 1200 psi and about 1270ft-lb at max pressure and flow. It’s worth the extra cost to have the peace of mind knowing that it will work with my setup.

Clever way to do this. When I did it I mounted the motor to the side of the gearbox and had to put sprockets and a double roller chain.

these motors have alot of torque by themselves , was wondering if i truly need the gearbox, iam thinking on doing a direct drive setup for my tractor, i have several of these motors at my disposal. whutcha think?

I feel the same way. I'm going to build one for my sub kompakt traktor with 3rd funktion. It is all hydro statik. I figure i would be a ke to kontrol the speed with my throttle.

What hydraulic motor did you use (specifically) gpm-and the hp and flow rate from your Skidsteer? I’m building one for my case Skidsteer and surplus center claims they don’t have anything I can use? Please help 😂😂🤙🏼

I used an 11.84 gpm, 3045psi, 19.81gpm, disc-valve gerotor-type hydraulic motor that is equivalent to the Char-Lynn 2000 series hydraulic motor. The best speed and torque output for the motor is in the 8-12gpm range, although it’s good for up to 20 gpm sustained use, and 30gpm intermittent use. 195cc/rev, with 2 -12 ORB (1-1/16 ORB) ports, and a 7/16-20 UNF ORB case drain port. Cost me $250 on eBay with tax, brand new.
