One-on-one with Sheila Johnson

Sheila Johnson became America's First Black Female Billionaire in 2021. She is the Founder and CEO of the Salamander Collection, the co-founder of BET and is the only African-American woman to have ownership of three professional sports teams. She sat down with Multi AP Award-Winning Journalist and Emmy -Nominated TV Host, Java Ingram for a one-on-one conversation about her personal and profession life. Ms. Sheila left us all awestruck with her vulnerability, resilience and grit! Her new book "Walk Through Fire" is out now. She was recently listed on Forbes 2024 list for "America’s Richest Self-Made Women."

my daughter won a trip to her Resort/Spa the Salamander in Middleburg Va and took me as her plus one…it was out of this world!!! what a gorgeous place!!!! Her resort is one of the most fabulous place i’ve ever visited!!!! every single detail of the Salamander is beyond stunning !!!!! She’s an amazing person!!!!!

I absolutely loved her book and I’m so glad she shared her story with us. Her trials and tribulations were so relatable and I found myself really inspired. I saw my mom and grandma in her story. Separately, I grew up in DC and went up to BET often for tapings of Video Soul and had classmates who were part of the cast on Teen Summit. When she divorced Bob, I was always under the impression that she was simply his spouse and didn’t have anything to do with BET. I thought of that when she talked about being erased as that was the narrative I heard. She was absolutely pivotal to the network’s success and I wish we’d all understood that sooner.
