ok so battlefield 1 is now officially the most historically detailed game I know like holy shit how do they even think of asking "were shotgun shells before the 60's really plastic or they were brass"
@munanchoinc

Brass shells were only used at the very tail end of WW1 like the BAR. It was used very late into the war . And thus soldiers experience an unreliable cartridge. Being forced to work with Paper ones.

You don't have to be particularly inteligent to know that kind of plastics didn't exist back then.. I knew some of these games like CoD were innacurate even when I was a child, surely a grown adult modelling the shells would use his brain just for a second? Not CoD devs I guess..

@@munanchoinc typically the paper ones only had problems if they weren’t waxed, which was a common practice for shotgun shells at the time. Especially considering that they were marketed towards farmers and police, who have to be able to work in all kinds of weather

I know most of the shells used in the First World War were paper, due to a shortage of brass shells. Brass and paper are still used, albeit more rarely, as they’re easier to reload and don’t split in cold weather like plastic does.
@griz312
@griz312 Жыл бұрын
Brass and paper are not easier to reload and are more time consuming. The hulls on paper need to be roll crimped since the hull’s end has a ring shap seem and you can’t use smokeless powder. All plastic shells will crystallize and eventually split regardless of the weather.
@docternoblex
@docternoblex Жыл бұрын
the typical solution against water was to use wax to protect the paper, which was typically red because a lot of it was originally meant for dynamite hulls, hence why shotgun shells today are usually red

One thing that has always irked me with the expedite is with semi auto shotguns, much like semi auto rifles, when you rack the slide and a casing/round has been ejected, as the BCG moves forward it carries the next round into battery. So in racking a round out looking at it and then putting it back into the gun would effectively double feed the shotgun rendering it useless until the malfunction on the users side has been cleared

one thing who alweys bothered me tho is not how they are depicted but spray patterns and inaccuracy , most shotguns are accurate to 45+- meters with regular shells and 80-100+- with slugs in most videogames past 10 meters most pelets go everywhere then where you want them to go
@cleeiii357
@cleeiii357 Жыл бұрын
Insurgency Sandstorm's shotguns have realistic ranges and spread patterns where you could still have most of your pellets hit your target 50+ meters away, hence equipping your shotgun with a magnified optic is actually a good idea. And that game isnt even a milsim game (too bad its dying tho) .

When I was a kid, we used ALOT of paper cased ammo ( usually black powder load's) to hunt with. You could buy them for pennies at garage sales. I have killed everything from pigeons to mule deer with them. They smell like rotten eggs & will foul your shotgun pretty fast. They are deadly as hell though, they are the only thing you can shoot from an old Damascus -wrapped steel shotgun also. In the first Mad Max you can see reloads made from paper cased 12 gauge round's. Some just fizzled & didn't go boom. 😆

To be fair, how many people would actually think and realise this? Considering there are people who don't remember there used to be metal slides and no guard rails on playgrounds back even into the 1960s, I wouldn't be surprised if people thought plastic shells existed back then, even in small forms.

The Full Brass Shell was given to the military exactly due to the problems of the Paper Shells encountered in WW1 and parts of the Pacific Theater. The Paper shells as a result was given to the civilian market as a cheap alternative. That's why the plastic shells addressed this with the crimped seal.
