I love the theory that Katakuri was going to kill Luffy and looked into his future. But instead of seeing him be a good bean or anything that made him respect the guy, he instead saw that if he tries to kill Luffy he'll unlock Gear 5th, where Luffy just turn into a literal cartoon character that will fuck up the ENTIRE island and everyone on it. Oda is a freaking dinosaur in his field of work now. He's even given interviews talking about how he's the last guy standing from his generation of manga writers. Not because the other guys were necessarily unpopular, but since many of the writers he broke into the field with are already dead from heart attacks/embolisms, as they literally broke down from working 60hrs+ a week for years on end. Hell at this point, many of the new mangaka coming to work for Shonen Jump weren't even born when Oda started One Piece.

@@The_Ninja_Tree, Pre-Timeskip always had Haki introduced, but they just called it different names at the time, so I honestly don’t how anybody could call Haki itself a retcon because it’s always been an established fighting structure in One Piece such as Sanji’s Diable Jambe, Garp’s Fist of love, or Zoro cutting steal in half all being different forms of Armament Haki; the Skypians calling Observational Haki Mantra, and Shanks had Conquers Haki all the way back in the very beginning of the series in the anime/manga.

People go on and on about good Oda's memory is and about how he's been planning this series in one for or another his entire life but the fat that he made up all 11 Supernovas less then a month before introducing them will always be the most impressive thing he's even done as a writer in my eyes. From that one last minute decisions came not only a 10/10 story arc in the form of Sabaody but pretty much every notable event in the New World. Yes Oda has been planning major plot points for a long time but here's an example of him making something up on the spot and unfolding that into years of fantastic content.

Supernovas are not the only thing...when he was about to introduce Sanji(Initially named "Naruto"), he found out there was another Shounen Jump Series whose protagonist was named "Naruto", so he changed the name to "Sanji" and the fact that he created the whole Germa 66 thing is a stroke of genius imo.

If we assume Oda had idea of the Germa in mind that far in advance when introducing Sanji, which I don't think we have any reason to think he did, then at most all this would have forced him to change is the names of Sanji's siblings. For clarity while I didn't but into the theory that Sanji was a prince before the Germa reveal I have since accepted that the foreshadowing was there but this doesn't mean that the entire Germa cast and plot line of Whole Cake island was fully developed as far back as Sanji's introduction as I've seen others suggest in the past. Idk I just feel like the introduction of 11 brand new characters who would go on to become major antagonists and allies with a months notice is quite a few magnitudes more impressive then Oda being humble and pragmatic enough to recognize it would be wise to change his new characters name so as to not risk clashing with a new series.

This. I've always told people that Oda himself has said he doesn't actually plan ahead as much as people think he does. I mean there are some obvious moments where he clearly did, but I believe a lot of what people think is astounding foreshadowing is actually the opposite. I think instead of just planning literally everything decades ahead, Oda just doesn't EVER forget any characters or places that he makes up. As a result, many come into relevance way later, but not because he was thinking that far in the future, but in the future decided to use a character that would make sense to be in that arc that most people assumed was gone. A good example of this is probably Silvers Raleigh, Roger's first mate. Oda has stated that at the beginning of the series he never meant for it to get nearly as long as it is today. This means it was unlikely he planned to have Raleigh be as important and pivotal as he ended up being. But Oda has a knack for being able to bring characters back in a bit way that doesn't seem like he's just picking random old characters from a bag, but rather reintroducing them at a moment and arc that both makes sense for their own journey and connects to the arc in important ways. Basically, he's a genius.

the thing is that one piece is apparently the only story oda has ever wanted to tell. he has school notebooks with scrawled doodles of early luffy designs in them simply titled "pirate manga". as far as i can tell, this story is the only one that has been in oda's head since the day he was born. so no, he hasn't planned the entire story out beat for beat and moment to moment. but what he has done over the years is internally gone over every permutation he can think of for how the story COULD play out. some things are already known, he's probably known what the one piece is since he was 10, but he knows every possible storyline he feels he could tell by introducing certain characters in certain arcs, and by remembering all the possible variations of one piece, he can turn random details from earlier in the story into full blown foreshadowing (shanks scares off a sea king, zoro senses his sword when it's out of sight, eneru and aisa use mantra to feel the life around them, gold roger is somehow the strongest man who ever lived while lacking a devil fruit, haki wasn't planned but these details set the stage for it to happen), and that allows the story to be cohesive even though what actually ends up on the page is made up on a whim. since oda knows ever possible permutation of the story, he already knew what the consequences would be for introducing the supernovas, so adjusting his timetable was as simple as "drawing new character designs", you know, that thing oda hates doing and would never waste time with by making every background character unique? right, what a hassle that must have been for him, "the editor says i have to make a bunch of new characters to play with? 'kay!"

Most people don't want to start reading One Piece because it's so long now, but I think right now is possibly the best moment to do it, considering the last chapter and where we're heading over the next few chapters. To be fair, I'd say any time is a great time to start, but so much is coming together right now. I mean if you liked pre timeskip better than that's your opinion, which is fine, but I find that it's a huge misconception that post timeskip is less funny and has less heartwarming scenes. I will admit that the crew gets split up quite a bit in the post timeskip arcs (which happens in pre timeskip too actually, but they always congregated at the beginning and end of every arc), but the amount of little interactions (often between the straw Hats and new characters) that occur that aren't directly plot related is quite astounding, actually. I believe this misconception happens because of stakes. Pre timeskip was essentially the straw Hats fucking around and having fun. Post timeskip is endgame time, meaning the crew has to fight the emperor's of the sea and actually confront the extremely dark and twisted world around them (And within them too. Totland is post timeskip enies lobby). I've been rereading One Piece as well and I'd say the only real downgrade after the timeskip is that we haven't had a emotionally climactic moment that can rival water seven and enies lobby. And even this can only be attributed to the fact that Oda is building up to it, rather than being unable to create another one. One Piece is just as hilarious as it's always been, just as optimistic and cheerful, and just as emotional (just because it didn't peak as hard as enies lobby doesn't mean it doesn't have insanely emotional moments). And some people complain about character design, which fair enough, but is 100% an opinion and not a valid critical comment.

It would be repetitive and bog the story down. Remember, we're trying to reach raftel and find the one piece, not watch a sitcom about the straw Hats.

@@midshipman8654 lmao yeah chopper is the "cute" one, just like Sanji is the "pervert", Usopp is the scaredy cat and Nami is the one with the hot temper. You can reduce any Strawhat down to their baisc comic relief traits that Oda has assigned them. Saying he has no importance to the larger story is just plain wrong. He's not a strong fighter but he is their backbone when it comes to treatment after the fights. None of the Strawhats have fallen gravely ill so we don't see it on screen, but it's his dream to be able to cure any disease. Oda wrote Chopper because he will be the only one to achieve that dream, same as Zoro reaching his and becoming best swordsman. As the King of Pirate Luffy will need the best, and considering how often he used techniques that shorten his life span, Chopper will play a huge role in that. Dismissing Chopper just bc he isn't in the middle of the fighting is just pretty dumb if u ask me. Like sure he is far from my favorite character, but he has his own important position to fill

As another point on Luffy's sexuality when talking about the Amazon Lily thing: Oda said a while back in an SBS, I believe during Alabasta, that he only draws Luffy reacting to naked women with everyone else for the sake of looking uniform. Literally just because he thinks it'd look weird if he didn't react. Not because Luffy actually cares. He said Luffy actually doesn't care. Luffy's pretty much ace in all but name (the main reason why Hancock's powers don't work on him).

I've been following One Piece for a decade now, and I still learned shit from BGE's lecture here. Dude's a champ Chad. Probably missed my window to write this by 24+ hours, but I wanted to quickly explain Gear 2nd and Gear 3rd: It's a massive distinction that Luffy isn't a Logia type. He is always rubber, and more importantly if you take a cross-section of his body you will find muscle tendon, bone, and blood vessels. With Gear 2nd, he pools his blood in his legs by compressing the bones down, then catapults the blood through his body. Since his arteries and heart are made of rubber, they can take the strain of the drastically increased blood speed, thus increasing the speed his body can move. Gear 3rd, or "Bone Balloon" has Luffy bite into his thumb and inflates his bones. The reason this does more damage is because the Bones are a thicker material. It's the difference between getting hit by balloon, and a Monster Truck Tire.

the simple way to understand gear 2nd (because 3rd is easy and if you understand 2nd and 3rd, the 4th is a laugh) is that luffy is pulsing his body. he's basically vibrating at high speed but forcing himself to remain still, then when he chooses to move, he simply relaxes in the direction he wants to go and rockets off. the medium he's pulsing in that case is his blood, which would make a normal cardiovascular system explode, but luffy's stretchy so he's fine. 3rd is just him inflating his bones, it's pretty simple. 4th is where it gets interesting, because by inflating his muscles and then pulsing the air in his muscles in specific ways like he did with his blood, he essentially becomes a balloon that can direct its own motion. combine that with his natural strength and the damage-boost from haki, and he becomes a supersonic balloon that can break a building in half by running into it. snakeman, boundman and tankman are each different levels of combining the pulsing, the haki and the inflation, resulting in a very diverse technique base possible for gear 4th.

Absolutely disgusted by the disrespect to THE Tony Tony Chopper in this video. One of the most KINO backstories of the entire series glossed over. The entire Drum Island arc is such a masterpiece of the world building, characters, and the theme of inherited will. Sure you called Dr. Hiriluk "based and redpilled" but you neglect to mention his incredible speech during Choppers backflash, as well as his death. I understand that there's a LOT to go through within the series but you can't just bring up these concepts during the intro and not point out moments of the story where they show up. It's tragic that Chopper is robbed of the spotlight further into the series but the boy needs to shine a little.
