I just love it that all of Luffy’s family have D in there name meaning they are all very powerful which is true. Tbh, I think he already has hence why akainu hates luffy so much. It is why he didn't stop trying to get luffy, he is well aware of how strong Dragon is and potentially lost to him in the past. Therefore realising Luffy had to be killed otherwise the potential for Luffy to grow into another Dragon was dangerous for him.
