The animation is certainly leagues better in the episode of east blue version, but overall, i still prefer the original. I love how they managed to make such an intense scene, despite the limited animation, with things such as expressive art, fitting music and good pacing

This video and your comment made me understand a little better why I still enjoyed the older style of One Piece anime as much as the modern one. The animation has definitely become more fluid and colors more vibrant in the modern style but it's less expressive in the art, less use of dynamic camera work for impact and of course very clunky pacing with some exceptions like episodes 1015/1017.

Yeah there are also outside elements involved. Since the studio is throwing money at getting these classic scenes reanimated, there is a push to show the money on the screen, even if a more understated tone might have been better. Like in the original it looks like Luffy gave it all he had and that was enough to just barely bring down the building. In this one you're left wondering how there is still any rubble left; it almost looks like the building should have been vaporized on impact. Hell this kick looks like it could have hurt Kaido with no haki.

The thing is, Luffy has always been extremely strong. He doesn't train or get any power boosts for the entire first half of the series. The strength he's punching people in Marineford is the same strength he was hitting Alvida with at the beginning of the series, so I think it's pretty fitting

I think the actual movement and animation in the 2017 version is “better”, but I think the character art and designs in the 2000 original are way better. Overall the episodes of the original 2000 have far more interesting direction, like cutting to the butterfly during Arlong’s speech to Nami and having the action and music pause for Luffy and Arlong to talk about Nami’s capture by Arlong. The remaster has better fighting animation but character art and overall flow and direction I think is lacking in the 2017 version

It's not a bad time to get started. We just reached the final saga in the manga, and there's plenty of character and world building to enjoy. The Anime scene is also... chaotic. The bad pacing is one thing, but within the bad pacing are some well done scenes that are worth looking into. Recently there was an episode we dub "Roof Piece" that a lot of people, myself included found amazing. Megumi Ishitani brought such a great breath of air into that episode. In contrast, there were episodes I remember in the Dressrosa arc that covered only a SECTION of a chapter and used everything in their arsenal to drag out the episodes.

I feel like Oda's (and to an extent the anime's) older artstyle had much more character. I specifically liked the more varied, but not too unrealistic proportions (like Chopper) and the stylistic uses of line art to simulate shadows. I felt that because of the time restraints of the original, it made the pacing and impact of the battle so much more satisfying. Whereas the new version, it feels like there's too much going on. So many new details that honestly could be cut out. The camera movement when Luffy starts his GumGum-Battle Axe doesn't feel natural as it goes from one direction then jerks to another. From a film-making standpoint, it just distracts from the flow I think most people would anticipate. @@forgottenrelics1197 I hope you start watching/reading OP. Right now, from a production standpoint, the OP anime surpasses many seasonal shows. The stuff Toei does is revolutionary for weekly anime. They really went above and beyond for the Wano arc. Episode 1015 is one of the best episodes in ANIME direction and animation-wise. People say the anime is poorly animated, but that's just false. Yes, there are poorly animated episodes, which is normal for any weekly show, but the OP anime had solid production till the Wano arc. From then on, the anime has just kept getting better and better. It's unreal! Btw, Hisada is not the beast he once was on DBZ, but he is still going strong to this day. His animations are still dynamic. Sato was a character designer for Ep of east blue. He also made a few appearances on the show. He animated one of the best scenes from Dressrosa arc. Shimanuki is stiff as always, but he's a great addition to the staff. His early OP work was great, but nowadays not so much. Naoki the GOAT Tate was really active on OP during the Summit War Saga, but now he's busy with Digimon... He was one of the animators who carried the anime for quite a while. Without him, the anime wouldn't have been the same. He animated one of the best scenes in OP to this day. I don't have to say anything about Shida, he's a legend. He's delivering HQ animation to this day. Recently he worked on ep 1025 but he's gonna make an appearance on 1028 as well!!! He also contributed a lot to the upcoming OP movie 'Film Red'. His work ethic is admirable! Ryo Onishi blessed us with amazing, fluid, action, and character acting animations in Thriller Bark and Sabaody arcs. Definitely in my top 5 animators in the industry.

Hats off to the staff for taking a weekly anime to such heights, I can only hope Dragon Ball can one day get the same level of consistent quality! But yeah definitely agree with everything you've said, I've noticed just from Hisada's OP clips on sakugabooru, while fine, isn't as strong as his early days on OP and Dragon Ball Z. Likewise I've realised that's the same with ol Shimanuki. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels the same way. Will be interesting tho to see where Tate goes after Digimon Ghost Game concludes. @@forgottenrelics1197 Yes, a lot of people love on-model consistent animation like Demon Slayer, but I prefer idiosyncratic animators who add their personal touch like Tate, Shida, Norio Matsumoto, Yuki Hayashi, BAHI JD, Umakoshi, Hironori Tanaka, Shingo Yamashita, Takashi Kojima, Masami Mori, Shinya Ohira, Kameda, Yutaka Nakamura, Ishizuka, Akihiro Ota, Onishi, Ryo Imamura, Keiichiro Watanabe, Toshiyuki Sato, Yuuya Geshi, etc. The age is definitely catching up to them (Hisada and Shimanuki, they gotta be in their 60s, right?). Since Wano started, Toei has been bringing in a lot of overseas animators to work on the anime. In the last two/three years the number of overseas freelance animators has been rapidly increasing in the industry. It's nice to see what other animators, besides in-house staff, can do in this industry.

For example making punches or kicks be too fluid removes form the strength or impact of these attacks and it looks more like trying to slap something with weak noodles while being underwater. I do prefer the old classic style for these early arcs.

I haven't watched one piece but my friends have watched this anime. And I was thinking about suggesting you to make a breakdown of One Piece Animation. I am glad you made it. I personally go with Shimanuki and Hisada I love the way they have drawn those closeup of luffy's face. And those hit feel so impactful. For me Shida is okay I love his complex camera work but I feel his part feels abit more exaggerated. Especially those fast lip flaps.

As you said, both have their appeals. One thing I will admit is that the more recent version can be a bit... distracting with some of its movements and honestly felt some of it could be dialed back. The drawings are great, and believe me it's nice to see a faster paced One Piece... but sometimes it just felt a bit too fast.

I think the movements being distracting has its charm too. We can understand what they're doing by the slow pacing, highlighting the climax of this arc than being rushed and left confused in the final product. I never knew Arlong bit Luffy but that just means that the remake did a lot better emphasizing Arlong's teeth drill attack.

One of the many things I like about one piece is that the slow change of the drawing style between the start of the series vs the more recent one is that gives the feeling of character developing. The characters grow and change, and so does the art style. I feel that the remake takes that away. Both are awesome of course.

I personally love how the art progresses. The early arcs are grungy and unrefined in a good way as our gang are new to the pirate business while the new animation services the world very well as it makes it feel more grand and vast as it truly is and it being more polished makes it feel the crew has matured overall both scenes look great and interesting to see how different animators handle the same scene so I don’t prefer one or the other and a great analysis ❤

older one is somewhat better at build to the emotion and the newer better on the character detail. If they combined both older pacing , development and impact with the new angle movement and character detail it would be perfect. I would like to see arlong getting his nose broke , wave head around , stop and look at luffy and fix the nose while talking , and the angles of the attack making a big focus on arlong then on how luffy reacts when he sees him coming and a fast pace like the old that it happens so fast so he envolves on repeting the same frame when the kick hits , and proceed to the same detail of castle destruction which was something emotional for nami really would make an awsome animaton.

I think what I miss most about the original Luffy is the specific detail to his face and body. The way his hair remained short but didn’t seem, for lack of better words, blocky or “thick”, same with Sanji’s hair. I always thought his face looked so much more human. His eyes were goofy and round but not too much. They didn’t just look empty half the time. his eyebrows were long, nose was pointed, and you can see the intensity not just in his eyes, but his entire face. I liked the way his face was structured-the round just isn’t my cup of tea. And then his body, there were more consistencies like with his height and build and I loved that he didn’t look SO short and thin in the arms or legs half of the time. He had the body of an average teenage boy. I don’t think I really started caring for Luffy’s design again until Wano. There are so many more details I could point out/elaborate on and this is no shame at all to anyone, hell ik I could NOT do a better job. it’s just my personal preference on Luffy’s design as a fan. I still enjoy the series all the same 👍🏽

i feel the episode of east blue had a far higher animation quality and budget, but was over-animated because of it. *I dislike Shida's style... (the modern one)* It's... overanimated. Like, you can't enjoy a shot without shaking, constant weirdly shaped lightning effects on black backgrounds interfering hit impacts, all while everything feels sped up, because of which pacing and impact effects suffer a lot. I already disliked this in Dragon Ball Super, mostly because Dragon Ball was always known for characters' solid poses, their meaty, powerful punches and kicks they deliver, and slow/repeated impact frames.
@forgottenrelics1197
@forgottenrelics1197 2 жыл бұрын
The lighting effects on black bg's are impact frames as well. But in regards to DB I think it's fine to change the formula up a lil bit from what we've had for ya know, the past 30 years. Funny enough his scene between Goku Black, Zamasu, Trunks, and Goku reminded me of DBZ's action when I first watched it, even though looking back now it's far more animated and complex than anything from Z, I guess it's just different for everyone.
@turbotrup96
@turbotrup96 2 жыл бұрын
@@forgottenrelics1197 The thing is Dragon Ball Z is an extremely iconic show which is very strongly aknowledged for its unique take on fight sequences and how they convey characters' strength in them. I think the new impact frames are quite a hit and miss in that regard because they mostly convey speed instead of strength that the audience is accustomed to. So, instead of having an evolution on the Z style, we kinda saw a departure from it. Might as well be used in a different Anime... which it is, as we see ;b That being said, I think the Broly movie balanced Z style with this new one well enough, and definitely far better than the TV series of Super.
