I would like to point out that the Smilodon is not a member of the Genus panthera or even the Subfamily Pantherinae, so calling it a tiger would be wildly inaccurate. I instead went with saber-toothed cats in general, which originated about 16 million years ago.

grauvogel is sorta pronounced like "grawou fohgl" it's german and basically means greybird grau= grey vogel= bird (also in german tarantulas are called "vogelspinne" which is "bird spiders" so that's probably where the name is coming from )

From the info I found, Rosamygale grauvogeli was actually quite small - only about a centimeter in size, and only eating even smaller beings coming close to their little burrows in the ground (which fits the way she trapped Sanji without leaving her rooms). I guess Black Maria herself is super tall but she is not technically based on a huge ancient spider...

The funny thing about Black Maria's devil fruit is that that specific spider was only like, 1 centimeter big. It was not a big spider, yet it's devil fruit is being used by one of the biggest characters in this arc.
